Another one

Indianapolis, IN- If Indiana wanted to win its fourth consecutive Big Ten title on Saturday, they'd have to get through the #5 Nebraska Cornhuskers, coached by former Indiana defensive coordinator, Paul Chryst.

IU got the ball to start the game and put together a long drive that resulted in a Danny Novak touchdown to put the Hoosiers up, 7-0. Nebraska was forced to punt on their opening drive, and Indiana again used plenty of clock, knocking in a field goal as the quarter expired. Indiana led 10-0 after the first.

Nebraska's next drive was more successful than their first, as the Cornhuskers took a page from the Indiana book and put together a long drive of their own, finished off with a short rushing touchdown. Both team's defenses controlled the remainder of the quarter, and Indiana held a 10-7 lead at halftime.

The Cornhuskers' first drive of the second half would end in an interception by Jerrell Silva, which the Hoosiers would turn into points with a short run from John Johnson. After the third, Indiana had increased their lead to 17-7.

Husker quarterback Rodney Lewis would keep Nebraska alive with a touchdown pass with less than three minutes to go to make it a 17-14 game, but a long Danny Novak run would eventually lead to a short pass from Joe Long to Greg Clark for a touchdown to put the Hoosiers back up by 10. IU's defense would put the game away on the next Nebraska drive with an interception, and Indiana wins its fourth conference title in as many years, 24-14.

"We knew we were gonna have a dogfight on our hands," said IU's coach Pate. "They're a really good team, but we just came out and played consistent football, made the big plays when we needed them, and got the win."

Indiana's Joe Long completed 16 of 22 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Danny Novak led the IU ground assault with 158 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown, earning him the game's MVP award.

Nebraska quarterback Rodney Lewis was 14 of 23 for just 82 yards while throwing a touchdown and three interceptions. Zach Hayford carried the ball 17 times for the Huskers for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Indiana will now almost certainly be heading to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, though it's unclear who their opponent will be. Pac-12 champ USC won the Pac-12 Championship Game and will be heading to the National Championship with their #1 ranking, leaving a spot in the Rose Bowl open to an at-large team.

Regardless of who they play, coach Pate says IU is looking forward to the challenge.

"We're excited to see who we play. Obviously winning the conference is great, but we have bigger goals. We want to win our bowl game. And that's where our focus is now."

Louisiana Tech's Brewer wins Heisman

New York, NY- Louisiana Tech quarterback Trent Brewer has been named the winner of the 2021 Heisman Memorial Trophy.

The Louisiana native redshirt senior won the award in a landslide, despite his team losing in the Conference USA Championship. Brewer edged out finalists from more established football powers by over 700 votes after completing 324 of 476 passes this season for 4,677 yards and 53 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 740 yards and 7 rushing TDs. Brewer's Bulldogs are 11-2 on the season, and have appeared in the top 10 in recent polls.

Brewer is the second player from a non-power 5 school to win the award in the last five years, after South Florida's Jeremy Johnson won the award in 2017.

Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Indiana gets rematch with Irish in Rose Bowl

Pasadena, CA- Indiana will meet a familiar foe when they travel to Pasadena for the 108th Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.

The Hoosiers will meet the 9-3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who defeated IU 17-10 last season in the BCS Championship Game in South Florida. Notre Dame will enter the game as the #5 team in the BCS rankings, after starting the season as the consensus #1 team in the polls.

It's been nearly 100 years since the Irish have appeared in the "Granddaddy of Them All", winning their only other appearance in 1925 against Stanford. Indiana is making their second appearance in three years, after defeating Tennessee two seasons ago.

Notre Dame earned their spot in the game as an at-large, as Pac-12 champ USC, the #1 team in the nation, who traditionally would have appeared in the game, will play in the BCS National Championship, which will also be held at the Rose Bowl a week after the Rose Bowl Game itself.

When asked if Indiana has last year's championship loss on their mind, coach Pate said, "I'd be lying if I said it isn't there. But that's not what really drives us. They're a different team than last season, just as we're a different team. We want to win this game because it's the next game on our schedule, and it's the Rose Bowl. That's what's gonna be in the front of our minds."

Notre Dame may be a different team without last year's Heisman-winner Dee Morse, but the Irish have had no problem finding his replacement, as two players, quarterback Joel Walker and halfback Jared Butler, both redshirt juniors, were in contention for the Heisman this season. Walker finished as the runner-up this year, while Butler, who finished fifth, won the Doak Walker Award.

"They're a very talented team, and they're really well coached," said coach Pate. "We've got a lot to prepare for, but I'm confident we'll be ready when gameday comes."

The rematch in Pasadena gets going at 4:30 PM on January 1.

Game Notes
It's hard to believe, but the final game of the season has arrived, and boy, is it a big one. "The Granddaddy of Them All", the Rose Bowl between #4 Indiana and #5 Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's National Championship. Notre Dame has had some ups and downs this season, the preseason #1 dominated teams to begin the season before losing three straight (in their defense, all three of those losses came to ranked teams). The Irish haven't lost since, however, and are out to cap off a season with a bowl victory. Indiana, meanwhile, knows how close they were to getting back to the National Championship this year, and would love to get some revenge on the team that ended their perfect season a year ago. What a way to start off the new year.
Keys to victory
Indiana: Defense. Notre Dame has a very, very good offense, and IU will have to make sure that the team that leads the nation in points per game scoring doesn't come close to their yearly average.
Notre Dame: Offense. The Irish enter the game with a pair of Heisman-finalists on offense, and they'll need them to have a good game against a tough Hoosier defense.
Prediction: Indiana 30, Notre Dame 27 in overtime. Notre Dame is one of the better teams IU has seen this season, and a win won't come easy. The difference should be the disparity between the two defenses, which should mean Indiana gets their payback, if only just.

Rose Bowl- Pasadena, CA- Partly cloudy, 61 degrees- Jan. 1, 2022

Hoosiers fall just short in Rose Bowl

Pasadena, CA- Indiana traveled to sunny Southern California for a New Year's Day showdown with in-state foe Notre Dame for the Rose Bowl, a rematch of last season's BCS National Championship. Notre Dame was victorious a season ago, and the Hoosiers were looking for revenge this time around.

Notre Dame got the ball for the game's opening drive, a drive that would end with a long field goal to put the Irish up, 3-0. Indiana answered back with their own field goal from far out, and after the first quarter, the game was tied at 3.

Indiana took their first lead of the game early in the second quarter, when quarterback Joe Long just made it into the endzone on a scramble to put IU up by a touchdown. The Fighting Irish would drill two more field goals in the quarter, aided by a Joe Long interception, and at the halftime break, Indiana held on to a 10-9 lead.

IU would use their first drive of the second half to extend their lead, when Bret Rodriguez, in his final game as a Hoosier, caught a pass and found his way into the endzone for a touchdown. Notre Dame would answer back, however, when Heisman-finalist Jared Butler scored a touchdown from 7-yards out. The tying 2-point conversion was no good, and Indiana still led 17-15 at the end of the third.

Bryant Swan would add 3 points to the IU score early in the final quarter, before Notre Dame regained the lead by way of a pass from Heisman-runner up Joel Walker, making it 21-20. Long would throw another interception, which set up a long Irish touchdown to make it 28-20 with just over two minutes to go. But Indiana would no go quietly, and Long found redemption with a short touchdown pass to Greg Clark with just 11 seconds remaining. Trailing by two, Indiana had to get the conversion to potentially force overtime.

The play was one Indiana has used successfully all season: a Danny Novak sweep to the left side. Unfortunately for Indiana, Notre Dame defended the play perfectly, and Novak was stopped well short of the goalline. Notre Dame recovered the ensuing onside kick and would run out the clock, securing a 28-26 win.

"It's always tough to come this far and come up short, of course," said IU's coach Pate. "Notre Dame's a great team and they were the better team today, so congratulations to them.

"We had a great season. We just came up a little short of our goal. But I'm still very proud of our guys. They played their guts out today. If we played this Notre Dame team ten times, we'd probably win five and they'd win five. Today just wasn't one of ours."

Hoosier QB Joe Long's final college game wasn't much of one to remember, as he was 12 of 23 passing for 132 yards, 2 passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown, and 3 interceptions. Danny Novak, also in his last game, rushed 31 times for 185 yards, though he never saw the endzone.

Notre Dame's two-headed offensive monster of Heisman-finalists, Joel Walker and Jared Butler, proved just a little too much for Indiana. Walker went 16 of 23 passing for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Butler finished with 48 yards on 17 tries and a touchdown.

IU heads into an offseason with some holes to fill, namely QB Joe Long and defensive players like Tyler Thomas, and a lot of room to grow, especially on the offensive line. Next season will also see the new Big Ten division alignment, with Indiana forming the new South division alongside Maryland, Ohio State, Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, and Northwestern. We'll have a lot to look out for in 2022.

Bret Rodriguez finds some open space, leading to a touchdown

Game MVP Richard Pierce makes one of his two interceptions
