Re: Cleveland's Revival: A Dawg Pound Tale
Gameday Recap: Steelers 37, Browns 29 Browns rally falls short after Freday's aggressive strategy backfire Marcus Wheaton catches a 9 yard TD pass from Roethlisbergerger with under 2 minutes to play. Coach Freday told his guys to sit back and let them score, since they hadn't been able to stop them all day. A score would put them down 8, so it was plausible, but it just backfired. This Browns offense is good. Really good. Better than Freday thought at the beginning of the year. But they need to become more efficient. Billy Cundiff cannot be relied on right now for any field goal over 40 yards, which cost the Browns today, as he missed one, and then the Browns turned it over on downs after choosing to forgo a long field goal attempt just before halftime. Isaiah Crowell had a huge fumble in the 2nd as well, and although the Browns got the ball back on one of Big Ben's 3 INTs, they had missed an opportunity. And that defense really needs to learn how to stop the run. There's no excuse being in the right formations and still allowing 6-7 yards on most carries. But that young secondary stepped up. Haden, Gipson, and Gilbert all had an interception, and on offense Josh Gordon had a HUGE day, having over 200 receiving yards, including a 77 yard catch in the 2nd. He was also streaking down the field on the last play of the game and had the catch if William Gay hadn't dove to knock the ball away. Let's go back to that decision to let the Steelers score. At the 2 minute warning, the Steelers had the ball, up 30-29, 1st and 10 at the Browns' 22. The Browns had all 3 timeouts. Le'Veon Bell ran for 3, and the Browns called timeout. On the next play, Dri Archer ran for 9, to get to the 10 and a first down. Freday's mind was made up. Let them score, and then be down 8 with 1:30 to play and at least 1 timeout. That's what happened, but after a few 1st downs, Troy Polamalu made an incredible interception going out of bounds. But it wasn't over. The Browns got the ball back off of a punt with 29 seconds to go. At their own 32, Manziel found Gordon (who else?) for 17 yards, but Gordon was brought down a yard from the sideline as he was trying to get out of bounds. After a spike, Manziel ran a boot leg and had Gordon streaking down the sideline. Incomplete. He just overthrew it. 5 seconds left, Browns at their own 49. Manziel audibles into the same bootleg and looks for Gordon again. It's a perfect throw, but there's William Gay, diving to preserve the game. Had Gordon caught that, he likely would have scored, but with two Steelers defenders right behind him, there's no guarantee. And then they would have had to get the conversion, so it was no gimme, either. Josh Gordon catches his 2nd TD pass of the day in the 4th, that would get the Browns within 1 after the 2 point conversion.

Re: Cleveland's Revival: A Dawg Pound Tale
Browns Trade Buster Skrine to Jets Skrine in action in the game just this past Sunday against the Steelers. October 14, 2014 --- As NFL fans and media outlets awoke this morning, they heard news of a surprising trade, surprising in the sense that it came out of nowhere. When you break down the logistics of it, the trade actually makes some bit of sense. Overnight, Browns GM Ray Farmer and Jets GM John Izdik went back and forth between offers, countering each other several times before they finally reached the deal. Farmer agreed to send Buster Skrine to the Jets, a team in dire need of help in the secondary, coming off of Sunday's 48-6 throttling in the hands of Peyton Manning and his Broncos. In return, the Browns were looking for help on the offensive line, in particular at the right tackle position, their weakest spot, to help with run blocking, which has been abysmal over the last couple of weeks. Therefore, they reached out and acquired Breno Giacomini, the 7th year man out of Louisville. Giacomini was in his first season with the Jets after winning a Super Bowl with Seattle last season. Both GMs stressed the importance of getting the deal done, since the Jets have a short work week and a crucial game against the arch-rival Patriots in Foxborough, a part of NFL Network and CBS's Thursday Night Football joint production. (Note: I went to that game in reality.)

Re: Cleveland's Revival: A Dawg Pound Tale
Browns Gameday Preview: Week 7 As modern and trendy as EverBank Field is, with a pool in the upper decks, it has never really been exposed to a winning franchise. Today is no different, as two rookie QBs square off. If the Browns can't stop these Jags, they can't stop anybody. The Jags might be the 2nd worst team in the league, only ahead of the Titans, who they beat 23-0 last week in the 1st edition of the Loser Bowl (the 2nd round will be in week 16). That was their first win of the season, and they really don't bring much to the table. They definitely have the QB of the future, Blake Bortles, and a strong core of wideouts around him, including Cecil Shorts III and Justin Blackmon, as well as an experienced veteran tight end in Marcedes Lewis. They are a mess in the running game, but Denard Robinson, the former Michigan QB, will start. On defense, the only bright spot is Paul Posluszny, who leads the NFL in tackling. The Browns offense needs to settle in and focus. Johnny Manziel has seemed to be in a rush over the past few weeks, so Coach Freday stressed the importance of sitting in the pocket when there is ample time, going through the progressions, and making the best possible throw on the play. Manziel seemed to find his mojo with Josh Gordon last week, and with the running game limping along until the return of Andre Ellington. The spotlight will be put on Breno Giacomini in his Browns debut, as he fights to provide better protection for both Manziel and Isaiah Crowell in the run game. The Browns secondary should at least contain the young Jags receivers, but the game will tell us for sure. They are fast enough to be able to cover them in man coverage for the majority of the game, the first game this season in which that has been possible.

Re: Cleveland's Revival: A Dawg Pound Tale
Gameday Recap: Browns 37, Jaguars 33 Manziel's late TD run saves the day and bails out defense's horrendous performance Gary Barnidge makes the final block that Manziel needed to get into the end zone to put the Browns in the lead late. It was a risky play call, as the Browns were out of timeouts and down 3 at the time. The Browns just had no answer whatsoever. When they pressed, the Jags beat them with screen passes, slant patterns, and out routes. When they sat back, the Jags beat them with delayed handoffs and dump off routes over the middle. The Browns struggled with getting consistent stops. After a shanked punt after a three and out and a Manziel pick on the next drive, the Browns found themselves down 14-0. But they came back to tie it before halftime on Josh Gordon's 2nd long TD reception in as many weeks. He beat Demetrius McCray on a play action fake, running a straight on streak, and then waltzed into the end zone. But the Browns couldn't stop the Jaguars from going down and getting a go ahead field goal before halftime to retake the lead 20-17. As much as the Browns defense sucked, they did do a good job of getting stops once the Jaguars got into field goal range. In the 3rd quarter, the Browns forced one of only a couple punts on the day, and Manziel hooked up with Andrew Hawkins on a slant route for 65 yards and the lead. The Jaguars got another FG to cut it to 24-23, and the quarter ended on a Browns punt, which was marred by a facemask penalty on the tackle. The strong field position set up the Jaguars to march down the field, but the Browns got a wonderful goal line stand after Denard Robinson went down for the possession with a leg injury. The Jaguars were held to a field goal, but still retook the lead, 26-24. On the following drive, Manziel threw a terrible interception, throwing it right at Demetrius McCoy, who snagged his 2nd pick of the day. The Browns couldn't get the big stop this time around, as Blake Bortles hooked up with Allen Hurns for a 20 yard connection, and all of a sudden, the Jaguars were up 9 halfway through the 4th quarter. On the second play after the kickoff, Manziel found Miles Austin on a slant route (again), and 61 yards later, the Browns had trimmed the lead to 3, 33-30, with a chance to get within 1. They didn't get the conversion, and were still down 3. The Browns defense finally held, but turned it over on downs at midfield. It would have been a better idea to punt, but it really didn't matter since the Browns couldn't stop Blake Bortles and his offense at all. But somehow, they did, and they forced another punt, that was downed at the 5 yard line. So the Browns had to go 95 yards, (or about 65 to tie) in just over 3 minutes. 10 plays and 3 timeouts later, the Browns had 1st and goal at the 8 with 17 seconds left. They had no timeouts, and if they were stopped short of the goal line in bounds, they would have had just enough time to call on the field goal unit and get the kick off in time. But they didn't need to. Coach Freday called a bootleg, with a tight end, Gary Barnidge, running across the middle of the field. But when Manziel rolled out to the right after the play fake, Barnidge's route was short of the end zone, and the only choice he ad was to run for it. Thankfully, Barnidge had the awareness to run over and block for his scrambling rookie quarterback, who had one man to beat to get into the end zone. He set a mediocre block, but it worked for the situation, and Manziel got in, and put the Browns up 4 with 10 seconds to go. Even they couldn't blow this lead. Josh Gordon ties the game after he makes this catch with less than a minute left in the 2nd quarter. Andrew Hawkins showboats into the end zone as he scores off of a slant route gone wrong for the Jags.
