Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

2015 Chargers' Season Preview
September 1st, 2015

2014 Record: 9-7, 3rd AFC West
Key additions: WR Cecil Shorts III (Free agency)
Key losses: TE Antonio Gates (Retirement), WR Eddie Royal (Free agency), RB Danny Woodhead (Free agency), CB Shareece Wright (Free agency), S Marcus Gilchrist (Free agency)

Coming off back-to-back 9-7 seasons and disappointing finish in 2014, the San Diego Chargers will look to make the leap into contention in 2015. It will not be easy, however, playing in one of the toughest divisions in football. The Chargers have a very tough schedule, particularly in the middle stretch of the season when they need to go into Denver, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. It will be vital for them to get a good start out of the gate. Here's how the new season looks for the Chargers.

Players to watch:

Philip Rivers
Rivers has thrived under Mike McCoy, throwing for over 8,700 yards, 63 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in two years. However, he tapered off near the end of 2014, is coming off back surgery and is without his favorite target in Antonio Gates. The success of the Chargers hinges on the play of their quarterback, so all eyes will be on Rivers early in 2015 and how he overcomes these challenges.

Jason Verrett
After his rookie season was shortened due to injury, cornerback Jason Verrett was lights out in preseason play and has stepped into a starting role beautifully. The question, however, is crucial to the success of the Chargers' pass defense is whether this play will be sustainable, especially when the 5'9" Verrett has to cover larger receivers.

Schedule:
Week 1: vs. Kansas City
Week 2: @ Minnesota
Week 3: vs. Cleveland
Week 4: Bye
Week 5: vs. Oakland
Week 6: vs. Detroit
Week 7: @ Denver
Week 8: @ Baltimore
Week 9: @ Pittsburgh
Week 10: vs. Cincinnati
Week 11: vs. Green Bay
Week 12: @ Kansas City
Week 13: vs. Indianapolis
Week 14: vs. Denver
Week 15: @ Buffalo
Week 16: @ Oakland
Week 17: @ Chicago

Prediction: 9-7, 3rd AFC West, miss playoffs

NFL 2015 Season Preview: Preseason Power Rankings
September 2nd, 2015

With the regular season opener only a day away, here's how 32 teams stack up heading into 2015. Obviously, there is very little on which to base preseason power rankings, so these are largely based on last year's success and off-season moves.

As such, it begins with the Patriots, fresh off their fourth Superbowl victory:

Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

Mathews' career day helps Bolts overcome slow start
September 6th, 2015

It is rare to see Ryan Mathews at perfect health, but the Chargers' starting running back proved that when he is, he can still be a dangerous offensive threat. Mathews ran for a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Chargers to an opening week 35-27 win over rival Kansas City.

Mathews' 3rd quarter 79-run touchdown run was a career long.

The victory, however, was not exactly how the Chargers drew it up.

The Kansas City Chiefs took the game to the Chargers in the first quarter, building an early 14-0 lead. Jamaal Charles broke loose for an early 60 yard touchdown run to open the scoring.

The Chargers followed with three consecutive incompletions from Philip Rivers who only completed one of his first nine pass attempts.

After an ensuing long drive by the Chiefs, capped off by a two yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to rookie receiver Deaudrick Cooper, it looked like the Chiefs would easily walk over their division rivals for the third straight time.

A series of big plays, however, changed the course of the game.

First, on the final play of the first quarter, Cecil Shorts III turned his first catch as a Charger - a two yard bubble screen - into a 44 yard touchdown scamper.

Midway through the second quarter, Melvin Ingram recorded a strip sack of Smith, permanently swinging momentum in the Bolts' favor.

Late in the first half, down by a field goal, Rivers found Shorts III for another long gain to the one-yard line, leading to a Donald Brown touchdown sending the Chargers into halftime up 21-17.

The Chargers kept the ball rolling the second half, when Ryan Mathews broke a career-long 79 yard touchdown run on the third play of the half.

Playing from behind in the second half, the Chiefs' dangerous rushing attack was neutralized. Jamaal Charles, who rushed for over 100 yards in the first half, was held to 33 yards in the second. Alex Smith struggled to push the ball downfield, as we was harassed by the Chargers' pass rush who recorded six sacks.

A 20-yard strike from Rivers to Malcolm Floyd late in the third quarter essentially put the nail in the coffin. Though the Chiefs were able to bring the game within a score after Danny Amendola caught his first touchdown pass as a Chief, they were not able to get any closer. A late Smith interception and the Chargers steady rushing attack from Mathews and second year back Brandon Oliver preserved the big win for San Diego.

The Chargers head to Minnesota next week to take on the 0-1 Vikings, while the Chiefs head back to Kansas City for their home opener against another AFC West rival, Oakland.

Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

Week 1 Power Rankings
September 9th, 2015

As expected, there is a lot of movement in the power rankings after week one. We finally got to see the 2015 edition of NFL teams for real, and got our first true sense of who might be contenders this year.

The movement begins right at the top of the rankings, where the reigning champion Patriots fall a spot after struggling to beat a weak Tennessee team. Those Titans, despite the loss, are the biggest risers of the week after hanging with the mighty Pats, up seven spots to #24.

The biggest losers this week are the Kansas City Chiefs, who for a quarter looked like they deserved their preseason top three ranking before crumbling in San Diego.

The defending NFC champ 49ers, however, made the biggest statement in Week One, blasting their hated rival Seahawks 30-10 to take over the #1 spot in the rankings.

Game Notes
The Vikings head home for their home opener after a tough overtime loss in Green Bay. Their schedule doesn't get any easier, however, as Philip Rivers the Chargers come into town fresh off a big division win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Second year passer Teddy Bridgewater struggled in the opener, throwing three picks, and will need to improve his play against a San Diego defense that gave up only 137 passing yards and forced two turnovers in week one.

Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

Bridgewater leads late rally to stun Bolts in OT
September 13th, 2015

In his short NFL career, we have seen two sides to Teddy Bridgewater. We saw both in the Minnesota Vikings' 2015 home opener. For the first three quarters, Bridgewater was ineffective, turned the ball over, and could not lead his team into the endzone. In the fourth quarter, he was confident and made big plays with his arm and his legs, leading the Vikings to a wild 27-24 overtime win over the San Diego Chargers.

Kicker Blair Walsh celebrates his game-tying 34-yard field goal that sent the Vikings to overtime. Walsh eventually kicked the game winner in overtime, completing a wild comeback.

Not to be overshadowed in the come-from-behind win was the play of the Vikings' defense, who blanketed Philip Rivers and the Chargers in the second half.

The Chargers scored on three of their five first half drives - all long series of 12, 8, and 10 plays capped off by Rivers passing touchdowns - to head into the half up 21-3.

But whatever adjustments the Vikings made at the half worked. Rivers was constantly under pressure and being hit, and his receivers could not break free from aggressive press man coverage. Though the Vikings' blitzes did not record any sacks, they forced several hurried throws and an interception from Rivers.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, they were unable to turn the turnover into points and the third quarter was mired by ugly play by both offenses. But then Teddy Bridgewater's good side emerged.

Bridgewater led two consecutive touchdown drives to begin the fourth quarter. The first was a brilliant eight minute drive which saw the Vikings convert four third downs, including a third and goal touchdown plunge by Darren McFadden. After the Chargers answered with a field goal, Bridgewater went to work again, leading another drive downfield, capped off by a 18 yard bullet touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley with under two minutes remaining. The Vikes were successful on the two-point conversion, cutting the Chargers' lead to 24-21.

With possession and a three-point lead with under two minutes remaining, the Chargers only needed one first down to close out the victory. However, the Minnesota defense continued its strong second half, forcing a three-and-out and giving a chance to the offense to complete the comeback.

Bridgewater made no mistake, hitting Kyle Rudolph on a 23-yard corner before hooking up Jarius Wright over the middle for a 30-yard catch and run. The Vikings ran down the field, spiked the ball, and kicked a 34-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining.

Overtime produced the same result. After winning the toss, the Vikings marched down the field for the go-ahead field goal. The Chargers, needing a field goal to continue or a touchdown to win, were once again unable to muster anything on offense. After a two-yard run on first down, the Vikings forced three consecutive incomplete passes to hang on for the wild win.

It was the second straight week that the Vikings played in overtime, after falling 30-27 to Green Bay in Week One.

Note: Chargers' running back Donald Brown and Vikings' receiver Cordarelle Patterson both left the game with injuries. Updates on their status for next week will be given as soon as they are available.
