Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

Broncos, Manning's magic too much for Chargers
October 19, 2015

With the ball in Peyton Manning's hands with under two minutes left, down by four points, did anyone expect anything else? Like he's done so many times in his illustrious career, Manning led a phenomenal game-winning drive, ending with a 15-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas with three seconds remaining to lead the Broncos to a 30-27 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Demaryius Thomas caught the game-winning touchdown over Chargers' safety Jahleel Addae with three seconds remaining.

The Chargers did everything you're supposed to do against Peyton Manning. The defense repeatedly pressured and hit Manning while only rushing four. The offense ran the ball extremely well, converted first downs and kept Manning on the bench.

Yet, great quarterbacks just find a way.

For the Broncos, the Monday night win emphatically announced their return to the playoff mix to the football world. After an 0-3 start in which Peyton Manning struggled, there seemed to be a changing of the guard in the AFC West, with the Chargers and the Chiefs waiting to take over. But the Broncos proved they are not ready to concede the division, climbing back to .500 and only a game behind the Chargers and a game and a half back of the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Right from the opening kickoff, this game was as exciting as one would expect from a Chargers-Broncos clash. Every time these teams meet in primetime, they produce an edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Manning led the Broncos to a touchdown on the game's opening drive, only to be immediately met by an equally great Chargers' touchdown drive.

And then the defenses and special teams showed up and made some great plays. The Chargers' sacked Manning on three consecutive plays to force the Broncos out of field goal range early in the second quarter. The Broncos responded with a great interception from Aqib Talib, who wrestled the ball away on a jump ball from the much taller Malcolm Floyd.

Matt Prater hit a 58-yard field goal to put the Broncos up 10-7, before Chargers' rookie LaJarvis Ivory returned the kickoff to the Broncos' 34-yard line, leading to a Branden Oliver touchdown. The Broncos responded by quickly moving the ball into field goal range and kicking a last-second field goal to end the first half down 14-13.

The back-and-forth play continued in the second half.

After the Chargers' kicked a field goal on their opening drive, Manning and the Broncos marched down the field. Montee Ball pounded the ball into the endzone for his second score of the night, giving the lead back to the Broncos.

And San Diego answered right back, again. A great drive led by Philip Rivers ended with a bullet 28-yard touchdown pass to Floyd to regain the lead.

Matt Prater kicked his third field goal of the game midway through the fourth quarter to bring the Broncos within a point and set up a frantic finish.

Rivers and the Chargers' ground game methodically worked down field to get into scoring position. But the drive faltered just outside the redzone. The Chargers kicked the go-ahead field goal, but left Manning with too much time.

With 1:20 on the clock, Manning began to work his magic. Aided by a great one-handed catch by Emmanuel Sanders on third-and-seven, the Broncos were able to move the ball into striking range. With the ball on the San Diego 15-yard line with no timeouts and seven seconds remaining, the Broncos had one shot to win the game.

And Manning delivered.

He threw a dart up the seam to Thomas, who with Chargers safety Jahleel Addae all over home, was able to hang onto the ball and fall forward for the game winning touchdown.

The Chargers will have to put this loss behind them quickly, as they head to Baltimore next week to take on the 6-1 Ravens. Meanwhile, the Broncos stay home to host the Vikings, looking to get above .500 for the first time this year.

NFL Power Rankings: Defending champs back in top ten
October 21, 2015

While the top four spots in our power rankings remained constant this week, a few big losses by playoff hopefuls has shook up the top ten. In come the surprising 5-1-1 Bills and the 4-2 Bears, both fresh off big division wins, and the Patriots, whose Superbowl hangover appears to be done.

Falling out of the top ten are the San Diego Chargers who lost a tough division game at Denver, and the Eagles and Packers who both got blown out by quality opponents.

As always, let us know if you agree or disagree with our rankings and where you think your team should be ranked.

Game Notes
A big AFC match-up that features two similar teams. Both the Ravens and Chargers have ridden a balanced rushing attack and MVP-level quarterback play to winning records early in 2015. Joe Flacco leads the league in passing yards, while Philip Rivers leads the league in passer rating. To stop the opposing quarterback, both teams will likely use a heavy dose of the pass rush, as they both rank in the top three in sacks. In injury news, the Chargers' top receiver, Keenan Allen will return to the line-up after only missing two weeks with a broken jaw.

Re: Supercharged: A San Diego Chargers' M15 Franchise

Flacco, Ravens continue to roll versus Chargers
October 25, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens once again showed why they are the mid-season favorites to represent the AFC at Superbowl 50 with a gritty 28-24 win over the San Diego Chargers. The win brings the Ravens to 7-1 at the halfway point of their season.

Deserving most of the credit for their great first half is Joe Flacco, who continued to bolster his MVP resume Sunday. The Ravens' signal-caller completed over 80% of his passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner to tight end Dennis Pitta with 1:44 remaining.

Dennis Pitta had a monster day, catching eight balls for 116 yards and the game-winning touchdown

What was most impressive about Flacco's performance, however, was how he rallied his team in the face of adversity.

The Ravens' offense was anemic through the first two and half quarters, only managing two field goals. The Chargers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after a brilliant 14-play opening drive. On the drive, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers converted three third-and-long situations before Ryan Mathews pounded the ball into the endzone.

Rivers, by the way, seems to be doing just enough to hang around in MVP talks with Flacco and the Saints' Drew Brees. He passed for 262 yards and a third-quarter touchdown that put the Chargers ahead 17-6.

Momentum, however, began to swing as Flacco got the Ravens' offense working. A 12-play drive, capped off by a Steve Smith Sr. touchdown catch and a two-point conversion drew the Ravens close.

Minutes later, a costly fumble by Mathews set up another Baltimore touchdown drive and gave them their first lead of the day to start the fourth quarter.

With Mathews benched after the fumble, and Branden Oliver undergoing the league's concussion protocol after taking a big hit, fourth-string running back Marcus Lattimore got some rare touches. And he made the most of them. On his second carry of the day, he broke free on an outside stretch run, galloping 37 yards for the go-ahead score.

Despite only trailing by three, however, Flacco and the Ravens' offense remained aggressive and would not settle for a tying field goal. Pitta's touchdown catch put the Ravens up for good. Down by four, Rivers was able to drive the Chargers to the Baltimore 21-yard line, but the potential game-winning drive stalled there where a failed fourth-down attempt sealed the Raven victory.

For the Chargers, this marks their second straight tough loss after a 4-1 start. They head to Pittsburgh next week in desperate need of win to salvage what was looking like an excellent season.

NFL Power Rankings: Saints march into top spot
October 28, 2015

And then there was one. The New Orleans Saints are the only remaining undefeated team, moving to 7-0 this week and finally reaching the pinnacle of our power rankings.

The Monday night upset of the previously perfect Redskins by the lowly New York Jets sent shockwaves through the NFL as well our rankings. Washington slips to #5, while the 2-5 Jets climb five spots to #26 - the biggest jump of the week.

In other news, the middle of our rankings continues to be a mess as NFL parity keeps turning its ugly head. Not much separates the 4-3 Eagles at #9 and the 3-4 Rams at #20. Just a lot of "bleh" in between.
