Re: MINNing For Gold | Minnesota Golden Gophers (NCAA Football)

Nice start in conference, 3-1 is never something to be ashamed of, though it does seem you are lucky to be there haha.

Hopefully you guys can finish strong.

2019 Conference Roundup Pt. 2

Week 10
#7
Vs #15
W 27-24
Game Injury: TB Johnny Berry (7 Weeks)
Another hard fought win for us. Iowa featured a Heisman contender at QB and we did well to limit his playmaking ability. Once again, the timely running of George Hill at the end of the game kept the chains moving and the ball away from Iowa. This team is shaping up as one of those squads that doesn’t have many stars or extraordinary performances, but one that features a lot of players who fill a role and a system that highlights their abilities and allows the team to succeed.
Week 11
#6
At
W 28-26
Suspension Roll: G Fred Collins (2 Games) LB Victor May (3 Games) Game Injury: CB Sam Romero (1 Week)
We had to fight and claw to win this one. We went in at the half down 7-13 and really had a tough time offensively. Illinois featured a very good interior at DT and MLB, limiting us to under 100 yards of offense in the first half. In the second half, things picked up and we got the train rolling, finishing with 333 yards of total offense. I’m sure glad this one is over. It was way too close for comfort.
Week 12
#5
Vs
W 24-17
Game Injury: T Buck Washington (11 Weeks)
Michigan’s defense was tough, but with key injuries their offense struggled. While they did gain over 350 yards, they turned the ball over 4 times. It’s easy to see why they’re now a 4-6 team. Without the injuries, they’re probably a 7 or 6 win team.
Week 13
#4
At #11
W 24-20
That was a great and improbable comeback. We were down 3-17 and marched down the field 3 times for 21 points in the 4th quarter. Northwestern stifled our offense up until that point and winning looked bleak. At any point, they have a very good up-and-coming squad. Look out for them in future seasons. We now are tied with Wisconsin for the B1G West lead and it comes down to how they fare in their final matchup for the division title.

Regular Season Thoughts: I really expected us to lose one or possibly two games down the stretch. And that Northwestern game, wow! I still don't exactly know how we pulled that one off. Bad news on George Hill. Oh, he's healthy, but if we can't get into the B1G CCG, it might be tough for him to get to 1,000 yards. He's at 933 right now and I assume no matter what, we'll be matched up against a juggernaut. Time to see what Wisconsin can do against Iowa to see who gets the honors of playing against Penn State/Ohio State.

Meet Me In Arizona

#8 #4

As it turned out Wisconsin ran the table and wound up playing Ohio State for the B1G Championship in (now) Detroit, where they won 28-22 and will be representing the conference in the Rose Bowl. We gained an at-large bid to the Fiesta Bowl against the Big 12 champion, Oklahoma Sooners. OU avenged their early season loss to Texas in style by beating the Longhorns 41-20 for the championship. The Sooners feature a potent offense behind an All-American Tailback, having been held under 30 points just once all season long. We're certainly the underdog, but can we prevail one more time?

Fiesta Bowl Recap

Week 19
#4
Vs #8 (99)
L 21-26
Game Injury: QB Clint Roland TB George Hill
The good news is that we held them under 30 points. The bad news is we still lost. The double bad news is that we lost Roland (1st Quarter) and Hill (2nd Quarter) for the game and Hill finished with 65 yards rushing, 2 shy of eclipsing 1,000 for the season. Backup Matt Treangen did all he could to get us back in the game, but his valiant effort fell just short of winning us the game.

Fiesta Bowl Photos

George Hill drags two defenders with him for the score from 6 yards out (vs Oklahoma).

Johnny Berry makes a cut and follows his blockers for a score of his own (vs Oklahoma).

With a defender barreling towards him, Matt Treangen fires a strike to Brian Roberts (vs Oklahoma).

It’s eerie that this class is ranked exactly in the same spot as last year’s class. In actuality the class was ranked #25 (with all of the random commits), but I have a spreadsheet that calculates the actual recruiting scores and re-adjust. Now, I just need to find a way to re-rank the overrated TBs and WRs. But for now, the best recruit happens to be a walk-on and that spells bad news for last year’s walk-on, Vincent Graves, as he’s now to be cut.

Offense
While we failed to bring in the offensive line recruits that I wanted yet again, we still brought in a balanced class. I wasn’t trying for any WRs from the get-go, but with open spots, I starting targeting the instant impact JUCOs. Williams might contend for a starting spot and will definitely see the field with his clutch possession style of play. Paul will battle for playing, and could end up being redshirted. Booker is very raw, but has great potential to one day be a star. I guess, the one failed area is Tight End. We now only have a SR and a JR at the position, but I’ll choose positivity and hope our lack of depth peaks the interest of a stud prospect this upcoming season.

On the line, Meade isn’t strong, but he’s technically sound. Pending on the off-season progression of others, he may see the field in 2020. Ideally, I’d like to redshirt him since he’s still 2 years away at-best from starting. Green and Rogers are guys who could move inside to center. Both are solid, balanced blocking linemen, but very raw. H-B Robinson is another pure blocker. I think I’m getting to the point where I’m starting to seek out blockers at the position who can carry the ball sparingly and 3rd and short while being an extension of the line on other downs. After trying and trying, we finally found a QB who we liked and who liked us as well. We weren’t trying overly hard to get a good QB, just someone to fill a void. But Ashley looks like he could definitely be a starter one day.

Defense
We really needed an interior commit and by late 2019 it became apparent that zero viable prospects remained. The off-season proved to be no different and I was left with thinking we would do without. Horton is the prospect that saves the day. He’s a bigger DE prospect who’ll move inside and fill a big need. I’m really excited for Baker, who’ll remain at DE. He’s a pure pass rusher, but a bit on the thin side (6-5 210). After a redshirt season and some bulking up, he could eventually be a terror for offensive linemen. At Linebacker, Black was a late addition and while he doesn’t run especially well, he could be a nice SLB in the future. He’s great in zone coverage and when he can get to the ball, he’ll make the play. Walker is a bigger guy and will move inside to be our run stopping presence. Strong name, strong weight room numbers, strong future.

The secondary commits makes it feel like an Oprah giveaway, ”You get a corner, and you get a corner, and you get a corner...” We’re truly blessed with the amount of talent coming in. Banks has a good shot at winning the Nickel Back spot and is a pure burner. Brian Taylor will likely start at FS and that still leaves us with 3 corners left. Nichols is the most physical of the 3, so he may wind up at Safety while Caldwell and Smith appear to be almost clones of each other. That’s fine with me since in a couple of years we’ll have to 2 corners we know we can count on. Chad Taylor is the low man on the totem pole, but in time he’ll get his chance. We also brought in a specialist the week before Signing Day. Causey has a decent leg and good accuracy and will be in line for the place kicking duties in 2022.

Looking Ahead
Once again, we’re still on the hunt for premium offensive line recruits. Thankfully our needs are minimal and we can throw the kitchen sink at these upcoming prospects. With cutting Graves, we’ll also have a big need at TB, but H-B Sean Williams could always move positions to fill the void. A high priority will also be Tight End and I believe we’ll look very appealing to recruits who want to play early and often.
