Re: Even All-Stars Fade Away ~ A Madden NFL 15 Franchise

For the 2017 NFL draft, the New England Patriots were able to address some needs and build depth at positions where it was needed. This doesn't mean that every position was addressed. The Patriots have left a glaring hole at the tight end spot. Rob Gronkowski is the only tight end on the roster. The Patriots also could have done a better job at positioning themselves in the draft so they can get a quality quarterback. Despite that, this year's draft was handled better than last year's was.

2017 New England Patriots Draft Picks
PickPlayerCollegePosHtWt
1/18Hassan DukesMiamiCB5'10"191
2/50Rakkim NewsomeRhode IslandRG6'4"315
3/82Deshun AveryKansas StateCB5'11"199

6/178Greg RichardsSyracuseLT6'4"344
7/210Jon HudsonPennQB6'3"237

The New England Patriots had their eye on cornerback Dixon Ware out of Georgia but he was taken by the Detriot Lions who were two spots ahead of the Patriots. Hassan Dukes isn't a terrible second choice though. For a young player, Dukes has the intangibles and the ability to make an immediate impact on this roster.

The selection of Rakkim Newsome in the second round was based off need. Unfortunately, the Patriots didn't find what they were looking for. This is one that not only the scouts, but the entire organization missed as well. Newsome will need time to develop as a guard and that's not what any team would hope for out of a second round pick.

The cornerback position was one that the Patriots wanted to fill through the draft and players like Dukes and 3rd Round pick Deshun Avery were spot on. Avery, like Dukes doesn't have top end speed but is a very capable corner. He should provide some good depth to the position.

Grant Alli's past in a 3-4 defense in college hasn't hurt his transition to the Patriots 4-3 defense. The Patriots were hoping to convert Alli to a defensive end, but the young linebacker has shown some promise as a linebacker. With time, if Alli makes the roster, he could provide some valuable depth to the team.

Gaines is another player that will need to develop some before gaining a significant role on the team. While Gaines is athletic and has good speed, his route running needs some work. What Gaines lacks in terms of being a receiver, he makes up for it with his return ability. It's more likely that Gaines will have a role their than as a receiver this year.

Neither the receiver, tight end or corner position were aggressively approach during free agency. With only so many selections, the Patriots reached with their second offensive lineman selection. Like Newsome, Carey Wilson will need time to develop. Wilson is a slightly better blocker technique wise than Newsome so that should give him the advantage in competing for a role. Neither are expected to see much playing time beyond the preseason.

Developing players is the theme for this years draft class and that will be important in order for the Patriots to be successful. Vladimir Elliott is another player that shows good athletic ability but not football awareness. Putting those two together will go a long way for Elliott.

Gregg Richards biggest liability is his ability to pass block. As a 6th Round pick, Richard's will have to show he can improve in a short amount of time.

The Patriots missed on some other quarterbacks and chose developmental pick with their 7th Rounder. The worst aspect of Jon Hudson's game is his inability to throw accurately on deep passes. This isn't a good sign for a team that wants to incorporate more deep passes into the playbook. There are other areas that Hudson needs to improve upon as well and only time will tell whether he will be able to do so.

NFL Mentions
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: Perfect fit for the Patriots. Love seeing players like Hassan Dukes shake hands with the commish.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: Former Rhode Island RG Rakkim Newsome goes in the 2nd Round.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: The Patriots go with Deshun Avery in Round 3.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: Chosing Grant Alli at the 102nd spot is a good idea. #Patriots fill a much-needed spot.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: See Douglas Gaines helping a lot on play-action plays.
Todd Mcshay - @ToddMcShayEA: Believe Jon Hudson can be an excellent backup.
