Re: The New England Patriots: The Masters Era (M15)

Ups and Downs - 2014 Week 5

Ups

Tom Brady: Who said his deep ball was gone again? It turns out he just needed somebody deep to throw it to. This week it was Brandon LaFell and Aaron Dobson on his one play. Brady would throw for 433 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Brandon LaFell: He could not be covered deep, as he totaled 4 catches for 189 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Rob Gronkowski: He was Brady's primary target, totaling 8 catches for 123 yards and his 1st touchdown of 2014.

Dont'a Hightower: He lived in the backfield as he totaled 7 total tackles, 4 for a loss, and a sack.

Patrick Chung: In two games filling in for Roman Harper, he has totaled 12 tackles and this week he forced and recovered a fumble.

Darrelle Revis: He was in shutdown mode. 3 picks with 2 touchdowns doesn't hurt either.

Downs

Julian Edelman: In a game, where the Patriots mostly focused on deep passing, Edelman disappeared. He only had 1 catch for 11 eleven yards.

Offensive Line (Mostly Bryan Stork): The Entire o-line had a bad game as Brady didn't have a lot of time to throw. They caused the interception, and on a few other occasions, Brady would have guys wide open deep and not be able to get the throw off. Stork had an especially bad game, being credited with 3 sacks allowed.

Tommy Kelly: He didn't have a big impact again, only totaling 1 tackle.

Dominique Easley: In his first, career start, he was nowhere to be found, as he didn't even register on the stat sheet.

Brandon Browner: He struggled a bit in man-coverage, getting beat quite a few times.

Re: The New England Patriots: The Masters Era (M15)

Bills corner Nickell Robey runs into the endzone after a 22 yard interception return

Patriots Comeback Attempt Collapses at End. Manuel, Jackson Lead Bills to Victory

Since 2001, the Bills-Patriots rivalry has been completely one-sided, very similar to how the Browns-Steelers rivalry has been. Since 2001, the Bills only captured wins against New England in 2003 and 2011. Add 2014 to that now.

The Patriots would receive the ball first, and they continued their offensive success from Week 5, putting together a solid drive that included a 41 yard fade pass to Brandon LaFell. The drive ended when Stevan Ridley ran in a 5 yard touchdown to put the Pats up. The Bills would quickly answer back by putting together a quick touchdown drive that included a 45 yard run by Fred Jackson, who would have a monster game. CJ Spiller would catch an 8 yard touchdown from EJ Manuel to finish the drive. The Pats would begin to struggle on offense and have to punt it away. The Bills would end the quarter by beginning a promising drive. Game tied after 1, 7-7.

The Bills would turn that promising drive into a touchdown. EJ Manuel would find Mike Williams open down the seam after a busted coverage by the Patriots. It would be a 42 yard touchdown connection to put the Bills up by a touchdown. The Pats would have to punt it away again, and the Bills would take advantage of the opportunity to go up by 2 scores. It was a solid drive that seemed to take forever. Finally, Fred Jackson would take it in for the 1 yard touchdown. The Pats would have around 1:40 to do something, but they weren't able to build anything up. Bills lead at halftime, 21-7.

The Patriots would finally be able to stop the Bills to start the second half. Up to this point, Fred Jackson was running where he pleased, and EJ Manuel was finding open man after open man. The Patriots would capitalize, they put together a nice touchdown drive where Shane Vereen would run in a 1 yard touchdown. The Bills would then continue their success on offense and put together some plays to get to the edge of field goal range, where they are stopped. Dan Carpenter would then come out and kick a 53 yard field goal into the wind to give the Bills a 10 point lead. Bills lead after 3, 24-14.

The Patriots would come out in the fourth quarter and drive right down the field. Tom Brady would throw a 1 yard touchdown to Joseph Fauria, Fauria's first of the year. With the lead at 3, the Bills would put together a very solid drive, but once they got into the redzone, the Patriots defense stepped up and made the stop. After the Bills field goal, the Patriots were just down 6 with around 5 minutes to go. On one of his first throws of the drive, Tom Brady would look for Julian Edelman, but it would be picked off by safety Aaron Williams. The Bills would turn that into a field goal to take a 9 point lead with less than 2 minutes to go. On the first play of the Patriots next drive, Brady would look for Gronkowski, but Gronk would fall down and Nick Robey would be there for the interception and run it back for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good which ended the game. Bills win 38-21.

Analysis

After a great week offensively, the Patriots were just average again. The offensive line was horrendous. Brady had no time to throw, which accounts for most of his first half struggles, but didn't have anything to do with the interceptions. Receivers struggled to get open, and some made some key drops. This offense has to figure themselves out fast.

The defense was abysmal. Fred Jackson ran all over them, all day, EJ Manuel had no trouble as receivers were open everywhere for, and Mike Williams was dominating Logan Ryan. The only positive things were that they played better in the second half, and Darrelle Revis shutdown Sammy Watkins.

The Patriots will have a short week, as they will host the New York Jets for Thursday Night Football.

Re: The New England Patriots: The Masters Era (M15)

Ups and Downs - 2014 Week 6

Ups

Darrelle Revis: He shut down the speedy rookie Sammy Watkins this week.

Downs

Julian Edelman: Against a great pass rush, he needs to be able to produce more in the short passing game.

Brandon LaFell: After his 41 yard catch, he was shut down.

Offensive Line: Again, this unit was unable to protect Brady, especially in the 1st half.

Dominique Easley: He was moved to DT this week, and he hardly produced, totaling just 1 tackle.

Rob Ninkovich: He got to start again this week, but he couldn't produce.

Logan Ryan: He was burned in coverage by Mike Williams this week.
