Narrow Margin: Jags Squeak by Bucs in Preseason Opener 17-16

AP Jacksonville – A strong showing from veteran QB Chad Henne helped Jacksonville edge by Tampa Bay 17-16 in the first week of the preseason. The former Wolverine, played the entire first quarter, going 7 of 9 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Henne started the game and is expected to start for the team in the second week of the preseason against the Chicago Bears. His touchdown pass came on a 69 yard bomb to rookie WR Marqise Lee.

The NFL got its first look at first round rookie draft pick QB Blake Bortles in the second quarter.

Veteran CB Will Blackmon had a great game recording a sack, INT and a touchdown.

Bortles had a very rough outing as he was frequently rushed. He turned the ball over four times in just a single quarter of play. Fellow rookie QB Stephen Morris played the entire second half of the game.

"It doesn't mean anything. Blake is a rookie and there are going to be growing pains. This is the preseason, so we were a little more aggressive with the play calling than we would have been otherwise. He will grow and continue to improve." -- Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley

The other developing position battle on the Jacksonville roster appears to be for the starting tailback role as all four backs on the roster appear to have a legitimate shot at the job.

Players vying for roster spots across the league will wait anxiously through the evening as all teams are required to trim their roster from 70 players to 65 by midnight.

Jaguars | Jacksonville Releases Eight in First Round of Cuts

Chris Davis of Jaguars.com reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars have released eight players in the first round of league mandated cuts before the team's second preseason game. The players released include HB Toby Gerhart (72 ovrl), K Derek Dimke (65 ovrl), DT Ziggy Hood (68 ovrl), CB Peyton Thompson (57 ovrl), CB Tommie Campbell (64 ovrl), TE Fendi Onobun (65 ovrl), RT Cody Booth (57 ovrl), and DE Chris Clemons (75 ovrl).

White

Jaguars | Rookie Tailback White Inked to One Year Deal
9 August 2014

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Jaguars have signed free agent rookie HB James White (72 ovrl) to a one year rookie minimum deal. White, who had a standout career at the University of Wisconsin, was drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots in the 2014 draft this past April.

He was cut during the team's first round of releases late last night. He is expected to compete for Jacksonville's starting halfback position but is currently listed as fourth on the depth chart. He is expected to see significant playing time in the team's second preseason game.

Baker

Jaguars | DT Baker Signs
9 August 2014

Chris Davis of Jagaurs.com reports that the Jaguars have signed reserve DT Chase Baker (65 ovrl) to a one year league minimum deal. Baker who last played in the NFL in 2013 with the Minnesota Vikings, was out of football for the past year. He was currently playing for the Ottawa RedBlacks of the Canadian Football League when he was contacted by Jacksonville. He is currently the fourth defensive tackle on the roster.

Yes it's just trouble finding out which school/coach/coaching style I want to do!

Wow surprised but not really surprised at Gerhart. It makes sense given the young depth at RB.

PS amazing work so far, I'm very excited about following this.
