Jamarcus Nelson Suspended against East Carolina



Junior Jamarcus Nelson faces a 1-game suspension after being repeatedly late for practice leading up to the pivotal match up with East Carolina.


Nelson, who's started for all nine games for the Blazers have become a solid 1-2 combination with Jackie Williams.


"Jamarcus [Nelson] has allowed us to give Jackie [Williams] some 1-on-1 coverage," said head coach Garrick McGee.


On Saturday, that won't happen.


"He was late to practice for personal reasons," said OC Timothy Fox. "We run a zero tolerance for tardiness. He understood the suspension. We'll miss him, but no one is exempt."


Nelson becomes the 15th player on offense to be suspended for a game this season, showing some strict guidelines implemented by Fox and McGee this season.


"Last season, there was no accountability," said Fox. "This was the guidelines put in by the captains. We honor that and we uphold it out of respect to them."


Now that there is accountability, the Blazers are thriving as a united. They're the No. 1 rush defense in the nation, along with their already potent offense.


They'll need all of that as East Carolina, a perennial Conference USA Favorite is next up. ECU is 4-2 in conference play this season. That match up is set for noon on ESPNU.

Blazers clinch Conference USA title berth

BIRMINGHAM (AP) - In the 27-17 win over Rice, the UAB Blazers (10-1, 7-0) has clinched a spot in the conference's championship game.

"It's hard to tell you what this means to me and these players," said head coach Garrick McGee.

Led by Timothy Fox on the offensive side, the UAB resurgence has taken the nation by storm, the Blazers lead the nation at 43.8 points per game. They're second in total offense with 520.4 yard per contest.

"It's really the maturity of the players," said Fox. "They're really young and they're just growing together."

The 10-win season is the most in school history, even dating back to the school's I-AA days. UAB went 9-2 in 1993.

"We're not finished," said senior Jackie Williams. "We want that championship."

UAB will play either Tulsa (6-5), Tulane (5-6) or North Texas (5-6). All three teams are tied at 4-3 in the conference.

McGee, Fox rumored as front runners for Illinois job.

Champagne, Ill. (AP) - Make no bones about it, Tim Beckman is about to be jobless. Just a week after the season ends, the rumors are running high.

Sources close to the situation at the University of Illinois expect Beckman to be replaced at the end of the season.

Beckman was hired last season, but has shown very little positive results since. He's just 2-25 as a head coach at Illinois, including a Big 10 worst 1-7. He was hired in 2012 after having a successful stint at Toledo, helping the Rockets to an 8-4 season in 2011.

Head coach at UAB, Garrick McGee and his offensive coordinator, coincidentally enough, are to be the two top names for the job. With no real finances at the moment to hire a big name coach, the Fighting Illini might be forced to go with a lesser name. With UAB's success this season, 12-1 and conference champions, these two are right there at the forefront of any rumors this off season.

McGee is just 15-10 during his two years at UAB and Fox has never been a head coach, being his first year at any collegiate position.

Sources say "McGee is definitely the main target, but with the Resurrection of the offense, they'll keep Fox on the back burner. He's a little too wet behind the ears to be a first choice yet.
