Local Birmingham leaders urging university to keep the football program

Jimmy Filler, a longtime UAB donor and fixture in the Magic City's business community, has created the UAB Football Foundation.

The primary focus of the foundation is to secure funding among the business community and other individuals to support the enhancement of UAB's football program.

The focus will be building a new practice facility that rivals other member institutions within Conference USA.

"As with so many in the Magic City, I am extremely impressed with Coach Bill Clark and his staff for the significant progress they are making on the gridiron and in the classroom," Filler said. "In our own conference, cities such as Charlotte, Shreveport and San Antonio have seized the positive impact of college football and its synergistic impact on their respective cities."

Clark said UAB has had one of the highest attendance marks in the conference, and there is much to build upon when it comes to the school's football program.

"UAB football is poised to do amazing things and with strategic investments to our practice facilities, we can build a program that makes our city and university proud," Clark said.

UAB football supporters fear program's future in jeopardy

Supporters of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's football program fear its days may be numbered.

Though attendance is up and the fan base for the Blazers has been reenergized under head coach Timothy Fox's leadership, some former UAB players believe a study being conducted by consultant Bill Carr & Associates could lead university officials to eliminate the program after 2016.

For one, Fox's 1-year contract has not been renewed.

Second, there are no non-conference games scheduled after 2016.

Three days after Birmingham businessman Jimmy Filler announced the formation of the UAB Football Foundation last Tuesday, a nonprofit that seeks to provide continued financial assistance to the program, members of that organization met with UAB President Ray Watts.

According to reports, Watts did not provide a definitive answer on the future of the football program in that meeting.

This week, UAB Football Foundation member Justin Craft issued an open letter to Watts, asking publicly for his support of the football program.

The letter said UAB has seen tremendous success with limited resources under Fox.

"Coach Fox has demonstrated that UAB Football can be successful on so many levels with subpar investments in the program. Imagine what UAB Football could achieve if it had similar capital resources as the rest of the teams in CUSA."
