I had to look back but that would be 2008. They started off the season 12-0 before losing their final two games. They made it as high as number 12 in the polls. And interestingly enough their head coach was Brady Hoke (who is also a Ball State alum). Needless to say they have fallen off quite a bit since then. Last season (2011) they went 0-12 and have only won a single game this season. Thanks for checking in Leaf!

Thank you my good friend. Definitely a nice start for us in conference play. The out of conference schedule was particularly unforgiving. We got to face some of the weaker portions of the MAC here early on before getting into the meat of our schedule. This four game stretch (Western Michigan, Temple, Miami, and Northern Illinois) is really going to dictate the kind of season we have.

I really enjoy doing the around the league things and watching the other games each week. I actually will frequently come home from school and turn on a game in the background as I get a nap or do work around the house. It really all just adds to the immersion of it for me, which makes me love it even more.

Always appreciate you checking in!

With Kinsman Thomas kind of struggling (or maybe he's just suffering from poor QB play?), nice to see you have another threat in Nick Vaughn. I don't think I've ever had a player averaging even close to 25 yards per catch. With him and Robert Thomas it looks like you have a pair of big-play guys at the skill positions as freshmen. Just get those lines built up, find yourself a QB and EMU will be a MAC powerhouse before their careers are over.
Agreed. The defense really stiffened up in the second half and once we were able to get some pressure on Page things started to get better. I will admit I was more than a little worried after the 24 points we surrendered in the first half. Luckily our offense was able to keep pace. I think the main reason we struggle against some of the spread offenses is that: one we don't have the depth to match the skill positions spread across the field; and two we don't have the speed to not get caught horribly out of position when they combine it with a no-huddle look.

Vaughn has been nothing short of incredible during his freshman year and kind of has me going Kinsman who? at this point. Kinsman Thomas's struggles, while I am sure can be somewhat blamed on quarterback play, have also been a lot of his own doing. He is just getting zero separation and he is leading the team in drops, which is very frustrating. Vaughn on the other hand is creating great separation, despite not being that much faster and is a matchup nightmare with his height (6'5"). I am very excited to see him and Thomas continue to lead our offense for seasons to come. Like you said, the next job is continuing to build the trenches. Thanks for following along!

As everyone before me said, your HTML is superb on the NCAA round-up. Screw becoming a surgeon, you may have a future in UX design .

Following as always, good to see you still around doing your thing!
Thank you for the kind words and for checking in my friend. Very happy to have you along for the ride. I appreciate the kind words about the HTML. It is a hobby of mine but I am still very much an infant compared to many. I have really had a lot of fun putting together this Around the NCAA piece.

Ball State had their famous 12-2 season in 2008 where they climbed as high as #12 in the polls. Since that they have gone 2-10 and 4-8 in 2009, 2010 respectively. Since this report started they went 0-12 in the first season (2011) and now have just a single win in 2012. Needless to say they have really been hurting since the departure of Hoke.

Thank you again!

Thank you for the kind words my friend. I hope you continue to enjoy and follow along. I have had a lot of fun with the HTML coding and hopefully will continue to tweak and improve upon it.

We are hoping for a strong finish to the season. These next four games are really going to be tough and will dictate where we end up. Thanks again!

Year 2 (2012), Game 8, Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan

Western Michigan cornerback Lewis Toler breaks free on a 94 yard kick return score / Freshman kicker Dustin Gordon puts the Broncos ahead in overtime.

Overtime Letdown: Eastern Michigan Falls to In-State Rival Broncos 26-23

Controversial reffing in overtime as Eastern Michigan has two game winning touchdowns called back | Clayton 'shocked and appalled' by calls | WMU scores touchdowns on defense and special teams.

AP Kalamazoo The Eastern Michigan Eagles loss their first conference game of the season in controversial fashion, as they fell to in-state rival Western Michigan 26-23 in overtime. The Broncos would receive the ball first in the overtime period and put up a field goal. On the ensuing possession, the Eagles would punch in an eight yard touchdown run on third and goal, only to see it nullified by a holding penalty. On the very next play, a two yard run up the middle, Eastern Michigan would again be flagged for holding, backing them up to the 28 yard line. This time, senior QB Alex Gillett connected with WR Nick Olds on what appeared to be the game winning score. However, the Eagles would be flagged for the third straight play on another holding call, pushing them back to around the 40 yard line. Two long throws by Gillett would fall incomplete as Eastern Michigan lost in heartbreaking fashion.

Western Michigan cornerback Tronic Williams would secure this interception in the third quarter and return it for a score. The Broncos only touchdowns came from the defense and special teams.

In a game that was expected to be an offensive shootout, both teams came out surprisingly flat. Broncos star senior QB Alex Carder had a miserable day under center only completing six passes and throwing for under 60 yards. However, junior HB Tevin Drake was able to pick up the slack as he ran for over 150 yards.

For Eastern Michigan, Gillett had a very shaky performance completing just thirty three percent of his passes and threw a costly pick six in the third quarter. Freshman HB Robert Thomas played sporadically throughout the game as he battled a sprained elbow. He is not expected to miss any additional time with the injury.

"In all my years of coaching, I have honestly never seen anything like that. Thirty yards of penalties on three straight plays, including calling back two game winning touchdowns. I am shocked and appalled." -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton

Eastern Michigan (4-4) will have to rebound quickly as they head home to take on the Temple Owls (2-4). The Owls are coming off a 36-22 home loss to conference leader, Miami. Temple is led on offense by star senior HB Bernard Pierce (509 yds, 5 total TDs). However they have struggled in the passing game as senior QB Mike Gerardi (853 yds, 5 TDs, 10 INTs) has struggled to protect the ball. This will mark the first time these two teams have played since 2009. Eastern Michigan has never defeated Temple. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM est.

Re: A Rising Storm in the North | Cheese's Eastern Michigan Dynasty

Not a lot of shame in losing to a decent WMU team on the road, it's probably the way it happened that has to sting. The penalties negating potential game winning scores and not allowing an offensive TD - frustrating way to lose, especially to a rival and playing with a team that needs every win as bad as you do with EMU.

You going to stick it out with Gillett under center? Maybe see what Benz can do? I know you planned to redshirt Iannotti and he didn't exactly light up the stat sheet last season, but he did get you some wins.

On paper, Western Michigan is close to if not the best team in the conference, with an overall team grade of 81 or so. Like you said though, it was more the manner in which I lost that hurt. To see two go ahead touchdowns called back along with pushing me 30 yards back and out of field goal range was just heart wrenching. Hopefully, we can repay them next year.

As for the quarterback situation, we are going to stick with Gillett down the stretch. I don't want to burn Iannotti's redshirt again (that is more of a "looking towards the future" decision than anything) and Benz really isn't a viable option with his throw accuracy (and power) where it is. We will stick with our senior for now. I am considering overhauling our offensive playbook in the future depending on what our personnel looks like. That is actually something I would like to do each offseason so I may look to add that into the storyline. Thank you for the feedback my friend!

Hope everyone likes the addition of the ESPN montage to the GIF in the weekly update. I got bored with GIMP last night and put it together. I am sure I will continue to tweak. Thank you!
