Re: Turn Back the Clock - University of Washington Huskies

WEEK SEVEN PREVIEW
Biggest news: Following their 44-35 win over Oregon, ASU jumps 10 spots in the AP poll but only three in the coaches. The Ducks fell from #3/3 to #10/9 with Pac-10 foe UCLA replacing them in the top three.

Ohio State dropped from #5/4 all the way down to #16/14 following their 31-21 loss in Evanston to Northwestern. Auburn, LSU, and Stanford all lost their second game, likely ending their National Championship ambitions and sending them tumbling to the lower half of the top 25.

Top games:
Not a huge week, with only one game featuring both teams in the top 25 (#24/23 Washington at #9/10 Oregon), but there are several interesting regional matchups.

Red River Shootout - #4/5 Oklahoma (3-0) vs. Texas (0-3): The 'Horns have struggled mightily in the first season under Charlie Strong, but all three of their losses have been fairly close games to quality teams (Arkansas, Utah, and West Virginia). This will be the toughest test to date for the Sooners in the annual showdown at the Cotton Bowl.

West Virginia (4-1) at #16/14 Ohio State (2-1): The Buckeyes look to rebound from their loss at Northwestern and host the Mountaineers at the Horseshoe. WVU's offense has been excellent with Clint Trickett under center, as they are averaging over 45 points per game.

#20/19 USC (3-1) at Arizona (3-1): The Trojans looked dominant last week in a 48-0 thrashing of Southern Miss, but hit the road for their fourth conference road game of the young season. The Wildcats had a bye week to prepare for this game after suffering their first loss at Washington two weeks ago.

Again, no movement in the Heisman race as the three in the top five who were active last week all played very well. Mariota could have dropped following the loss at Arizona State, but the defeat wasn't all his fault.

HUSKY PREVIEW
Depending on the Husky fan you talk to, this border battle could be the biggest rivalry game UW plays. The Ducks have won the past 10 meetings all by at least 17 points, allowing some Oregon fans to claim they "Win the Decade," rather than just their typical "Win the Day" motto.

There are a lot of reasons why Oregon has dominated the series - coaching, scheme, but most of all, they've just flat out had more talent. Marcus Mariota has a rating over 200 and several talented receivers so is difficult for anyone to stop. RB Royce Freeman may contend for Freshman of the Year and their Quack Attack defense is #1 in the country against the run.

Practices were intense leading up to this game, and unfortunately, the Dawgs lost a pair of players to injury. Senior DE Andrew Hudson, who leads the team in sacks, and junior guard Dexter Charles both suffered leg injuries that will sideline them. Sophomore Joe Mathis and senior Michael Criste are expected to start in their absence.

Marcus Mariota (8) points out blocks for his linemen to pick up on a 61-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Junior Jaydon Mickens (4) hauls in a crossing route in front of star cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (14).

Kendyl Taylor (13), a sophomore wideout, isn't quite able to drag his foot in the end zone during the third quarter. QB Cyler Miles would fumble on the next play.

Trailing 44-18, a great tiptoe catch on the sidelines by freshman Dante Pettis (87) led to a TD that made the score look a little more respectable.

WEEK SEVEN TOP NEWS
Texas (1-3) 42, #4/5 Oklahoma (3-1) 28: Senior Malcolm Brown ran for 103 yards and four touchdowns as the Longhorns won their first game of the year against their bitter rival to the north. Texas rolled to 570 yards of offense in their finest showing of the season.

at #16/14 Ohio State (3-1) 63, West Virginia (4-2) 40: J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones split time under center and combined to throw for 438 yards and 7 TDs against an overmatched Mountaineer defense. Russell Shell had a record-tying 99-yard touchdown run in a losing effort.

at Arizona (4-1) 37, #20/19 USC (3-2) 34: An old-fashioned Pac-10 shootout with both teams combining for nearly 1,100 yards of offense, over 800 of which was through the air. Cody Kessler (27/36, 447 yds, 4 TD) and freshman JuJu Smith (12 receptions, 251 yds, 3 TD) were an unstoppable duo for the Trojans, but two late field goals from Casey Skowron, including a 40 yarder with just nine seconds left lifted Arizona to their fourth win.

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney had a big week on the recruiting trail, picking up commitments from three four-star prospects, including two from South Carolina on the defensive line.

Arizona and USC picked up potential stars at quarterback in Travis Waller and Ricky Town, respectively. A pair of five-star players committed, with WR Preston Williams taking his talents to Columbia, SC to play for the Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier and Minkah Fitzpatrick deciding on Ohio State over Florida State and Penn State.

Mariota was just a nightmare in that one, 160 yads and three scores...good gosh.... Tough to defend against one of the best. Washington probably quite there yet as a team but in a couple of seasons, you will be taking teams like Oregon down. Hang in there my friend.

He's been a nightmare against pretty much every team over the previous three years, so not a surprise there. I just couldn't stop the zone read play with him and Royce Freeman. Eventually we loaded the box and slowed it down slightly, but still couldn't stop them. And it opened up the passing game a bit more.

Another issue has been how accurate the QBs have been against me... I haven't held anyone under 60% completions yet all season and Mariota/Hogan have combined to go 35-of-43 (81%) the last two weeks. The young secondary is definitely having some issues and it has made getting off the field tough. Luckily both of those teams have preferred to run the ball.

Loving that guys like Campbell and Town are actually going where they committed, yet guys like Fitzpatrick are going to other big-time schools.

Mariota is just too much...he always is in that first season. Though I find it interesting that the Heisman watch is holding somewhat true to form from the real 2014. (Whereas I had UCLA RB Jordon James winning the Heisman in 2014...haha.)

WEEK EIGHT PREVIEW
Biggest news: Oklahoma (3-1) dropped all the way from #4/5 to #17/20 following their blowout loss in the Red River Shootout (to a previously 0-3 Longhorn team), leaving Missouri (4-0, #8/8) as the only Big 8 team in the top 10.

Oregon (5-1, #9/9) leapfrogged Arizona State (5-1, #10/17), the only team to defeat them, as the top-ranked team with one loss.

It's rare when a team that records a 52-31 win over Florida in the Swamp actually drops in the rankings. LSU (4-2, #21/21) managed to fall a couple spots, with undefeated Utah (4-0, #19/18) and Duke (4-0, #20/19) jumping the Tigers.

Also, news coming out of the ACC regarding the Blue Devils - senior QB Anthony Boone, who was averaging nearly 350 passing yards per game with a nation-leading rating of 213.3, will miss the rest of the season due to broken vertebrae suffered during a win over Indiana. He may qualify for a medical redshirt due to only playing in three games in 2014.

Top games:
#3/3 UCLA (5-0) at #22/NR Stanford (3-2): The Bruins had better not look past the Cardinal even though they face Oregon at the Rose Bowl next week. Both of Stanford's losses have come at home, so UCLA certainly won't be intimidated by the venue at the Farm.

NR/#24 USC (3-2) at #7/7 Notre Dame (6-0): Already the fifth road game for Steve Sarkisian's Trojans, they look to rebound from last Thursday's 37-34 loss at Arizona. The Irish have started 6-0, winning each game by at least 18 points but have played only one major/power school, 1-5 Penn State.

#8/8 Missouri (4-0) at #23/25 Nebraska (3-1): The Tigers have been slaughtering foes by an average score of 50-17, but those victories have all come at home over Georgia State, Old Dominion, Tulsa, and USF - not exactly a tough slate. Nebraska lost their opener at surprising Toledo (5-1) but have won two tough road games at Pittsburgh and Miami-FL since.

#11/10 Ole Miss (5-1) at #21/21 LSU (4-2): The Tigers come into this one fresh off the heels of their finest offensive performance of the season, a 52-31 thrashing at Florida. Anthony Jennings appears to have seized the QB job, accounting for 372 yards of offense and five touchdowns against the Gators. LSU may need a similar showing against the Rebels, who barely allow over 20 PPG.

#16/13 Ohio State (3-1) at #24/22 Iowa (3-1): The Hawkeyes fought valiantly against Michigan State in a 24-17 loss two weeks ago and had a bye to prepare for the other Big Ten favorite, Ohio State. The Buckeyes have scored at least 45 points in each of their three wins.

Barring an injury, the top three quarterbacks all appear to be on the invite list to the Downtown Athletic Club. It is still early, but they have far and away been the best players in the country. Melvin Gordon has himself on the fringe as the top running back while this week Everett Golson, the starting QB for the 6-0 Fighting Irish, replaces FSU WR Rashad Greene on the list. Golson has struggled with accuracy, but with the excellent TD:INT ratio and an undefeated record at one of the traditional powers, he has some support. Godson has a chance to move up the list as Notre Dame hosts rivals USC this week.

HUSKY PREVIEW
Following the blowout loss to Oregon, UW gets to host the only team to beat the Ducks this year, Arizona State. Much like Oregon, who have now won 11 straight over the Huskies, ASU has owned the Dawgs of late, winning the past eight meetings.

It won't be easy to snap that streak this week as the Sun Devils are averaging over 50 PPG the last three weeks, and that includes games with Oregon and USC, not exactly the little sisters of the poor. Their offense has been extremely balanced, averaging over 300 yards passing and 200 yards rushing.

Due to a lack of depth at running back (both Dwayne Washington and Lavon Coleman will be out because of injuries), OLB Shaq Thompson will see some action on both sides of the ball. LG Dexter Charles will miss his second game of the season after leaving practice Thursday with a sprained knee.

I think it has been about 50/50 so far in having the real recruits going to their accurate school. That should create a fun mix of reality/sim/fantasy going forward.

Here is to hoping that is the last time I have to face Mariota and he goes pro after this year, just like real life.

Regarding the Heisman list, the best players have played well, so hasn't been a ton of movement. James had a lot of hype coming in and always seemed to be slightly overrated in the game in my opinion. But guys have come out of nowhere to win the trophy in recent years - if I'm remembering correctly, probably 7 or 8 out of the last 12 winners wouldn't be considered in the top five in the preseason and a half of those guys probably weren't considered in the top 10 or 20 even.
