OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Pullman, Washington – Maxx Forde sacked Connor Halliday early in the game for a safety. The play came after a fumble by freshman quarterback Eddie Bates in the redzone. Forde’s big play served to energize the entire Idaho team after they had just had the wind knocked out of their sails minutes earlier.
Maxx Forde’s early sack for a safety set the tone
“We’re hoping to see a number of big plays from Maxx this year.” Coach Wilkerson said after giving Forde credit for the momentum shift.
Freshmen Eddie Bates and Reggie Beck, who Wilkerson had high praise for, contributed over 400 yards of offense and scored four touchdowns between them in their debut. Bates ran and passed for nearly 300 yards on his own, scoring on the ground three times. Bates was efficient throwing the ball as he completed 16 of his 21 attempts for 176 yards and no interceptions. He did fumble inside the Cougars ten yard line on the Vandals first possession.
“It was a read option and I pulled it back just a second too late and Reggie (Beck) bumped it.” Bates explained when asked about the play. “That one’s on me.”
Idaho got much deeper into the playbook than we ever saw last season, employing a mix of different formations and personnel groupings. Wilkerson even showed an alignment with Beck at quarterback and Bates at runningback. Washington State stacked the line of scrimmage on the first play from the formation, expecting a Beck run. Beck threw a quick pass to tight end Ronnie Rawls who picked up 16 yards on the play. Idaho used six different runningbacks in the game.
The defense was stuck primarily in a 3-3-5 or dime look as they defended Washington State’s pass heavy offense.
Idaho out gained Washington State 513 yards to 270, including a 321 to -3 advantage on the ground. The Vandals possessed the ball for over three quarters of the game, using their clock chewing running attack to keep the pass heavy Cougars offense and Halliday on the sidelines.
Washington State’s Connor Halliday struggled mightily in the first half before tossing three touchdown passes in the second half.
Idaho will face Arkansas State on the road next week in their first Sun Belt Conference action. Arkansas State has yet to play a game this season.
