Definitely following! I love getting involved in dynasties early so I can enjoy watching them pan out over time!

Great work so far! This looks to be a fun journey with the Aztecs! Good luck!

I'll be checking in man. Donnel Pumphrey's a BEAST.

Thanks, I haven't dabbled with code since I was on another community forum way back in middle school. It took me a while to figure it out again.

Re: Rise Up - San Diego State Aztecs Dynasty

Head Coach Rocky Long Declares Quarterback Battle Imminent

At a small news presser San Diego State head coach Rocky Long makes it clear that there will be a three way battle for the starting role at quarterback. Long and staff must choose from Kentucky transfer Maxwell Smith, Oregon transfer Jake Rodrigues, and red shirt freshman Christian Chapman.

“You keep hearing me say this but it bears repeating, we need to open up the field more with our passing game. The goal of our starter is for them to complete more passes than we did last year.”

The fact of the matter is: this shouldn’t surprise anyone. The burst of inital shock about a three-way fight for the top will go to the wayside when reminded of how no receiver caught over 500 yards through the air. Ezell Ruffin, now gone for the pros, only eclipsed 422 yards while star wideout Eric Judge (81), limited with injuries late in the year, came close with 472 yards.

That needs to improve. A lot.

Whoever is named the starter will have great help, with Donnel Pumphrey demanding attention in the backfield. The receiving core, while it doesn’t jump off the page, is certainly promising for the coming year. Judge returns with Junior Lloyd Mills (11) along with eager sophomores Mikah Holder (85) and Chase Favreau (5). Mills is the Aztecs primary slot receiver. Posting 310 yards, look for him to be involved more.

Holder got decent time in last year, and is a favorite to be on the field most of the time. Favreau remains to be seen as he switches from a dual threat quarterback to receiver.

Long has like the improvements in both Holder and Favreau.

“Holder surprised all of us last season. While it doesn’t show through the stat sheet, he can be a force to be reckoned with when put in the right situation.” On Favreau, he says that “he has quite the athleticism we expected when he switched. We know as well as anyone that there is a trend of quarterbacks flipping to receivers. With Chase, it allows him to improve his skills as a wideout.”

While making Hallmark-type reviews of his players, he is quick to remind all of us of one more player: 4 star recruit DeSean Holmes (82).

“We are glad he’s apart of our program. He’s shown he can hang with the rest of us quite early on.”

All of this praise, however, won’t matter unless he finds consistency at the flagship position. During the presser he said that after their spring drills that red shirt freshman Christian Chapman is the way too early favorite, followed by Maxwell Smith, and ending with Jake Rodrigues. The early listing shocked the room, but not to Long and his staff:

“We see a lot of potential in him. Mobile with a fast release and good accuracy. He’s young but he has the confidence that we look for.”

What do you think of the announcement by Long? Do you think Chapman will be the starter, or will it be the pocket passer Smith or dual threat Rodrigues?

Hopefully this stirs the pot for all of you well enough. Lots to cover in the days to come. Next post will be about my favorite part: RECRUITING. Stay tuned!
