Wyoming Tops New Mexico in Wild Affair

Albuquerque, NM -- With seven of their 2014 targets in the stands, it looked like New Mexico was going to give them something to get excited about as they jumped on visiting Wyoming 17-7 after the first quarter. However, the Cowboys had something else in mind as they outscored the Lobos 10-0 in the second quarter to even things 17-17 at the half. Wyoming would take their first lead early in the third quarter on a 9 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Lance Gardner to senior wideout Pete Fowlkes to put Wyoming ahead 24-17 which was were the two teams stood heading into a fourth quarter that would prove to be very wild.

New Mexico began the third quarter with a touchdown as Rasheed Harris and Blake McQueen hooked up from 2 yards out to make it a 24-24 game. Wyoming answered on their following possession as sophomore running back David Peters punched the ball into the endzone from one yard out, and Wyoming regained the lead, 31-24. Robby Bolden capped off New Mexico's next drive with an 8-yard TD run as New Mexico pulled even once again, 31-31. With just 2:39 remaining, Wyoming successfully drained most of the clock on their final possession before Gardner hit junior wideout Zach Golden for the game winning touchdown with 28 seconds remaining.

Brown Throws for 6 Touchdowns as San Jose State Romps New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM -- If New Mexico ever learns to put two halves together, things might get a little scary for the rest of the Mountain West Conference. Until then, though, Lobos head coach Justin Simmons will be left scratching his head figuring out how to get his team to play in the second half comparable to how they played in the second half. New Mexico has already blown one 17 point lead this season that resulted in a loss and followed that up by nearly blowing a 28-13 fourth quarter lead as they managed to eek out a 35-34 win over UNLV. This week, however, New Mexico was left in a cloud of dust in the second half by Stephen Brown and the San Jose State offense. The senior quarterback threw five of his six touchdowns of the game in the second half as the Spartans outscored the Lobos 24-0 in the third quarter and 38-10 in the second half to erase a 17-7 halftime deficit on their way to an easy 45-27 win.

Brown connected with fellow senior Jake Wright for four of his six passing touchdowns as he completed 21-of-37 passes for 434 yards. Wright had a big day, catching 9 passes for 238 yards and 4 touchdowns. For the Lobos it was tight end Blake McQueen who shined as he caught 9 of Rasheed Harris' 18 completions for 183 yards and 1 touchdown.

San Jose State made it 31 unanswered points as Brown and Wright hooked up for the final time early in the fourth quarter to put the Spartans ahead 38-17. New Mexico made things somewhat interesting as Harris hit McQueen for an 82 yard touchdown on the first play of their next possession to make it a 38-24 ballgame with 6:21 remaining. However, San Jose State quickly responded with a 58 yard touchdown pass from Brown to Mark McRae. New Mexico added a FG with a little over 5 minutes remaining but that would be the last time either team got on the scoreboard as the Lobos fell to the Spartans 45-27.

Longhorns Crush Lobos 45-14

Austin, TX (AP) -- To the surprise of most, New Mexico managed to hang around with the 11th ranked Texas Longhorns for three quarters, trailing just 24-14 heading into the 4th. Texas then decided enough was enough and put away the hapless visitors in the 4th, outscoring them 21-0 en route to a 45-14 win. Texas' two quarterbacks that saw action, Javon Sowell and Jarod Jones, combined to complete 20-of-33 passes for 330 yards and 4 touchdowns, receiver Brent Hayden caught 10 passes for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns. New Mexico sophomore quarterback Rasheed Harris struggled mightily, completing just 8-of-26 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns but did manage to lead the overmatched Lobos with 54 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.

"It was a rough day for Sheed," said New Mexico offensive coordinator Harper Holloway. "He was roughed up quite a bit and under pressure seemingly every time he dropped back to pass. He's young and determined, though, and he'll bounceback. He'll learn from this and get better.

The loss was New Mexico's (3-5, 2-3) third straight after winning three in a row. They will get a much needed bye week next week before returning home to face Air Force in a crucial game for their bowl hopes.

Lobos Beat Air Force Going Away

Albuquerque, NM -- Things seemed dire when New Mexico starting quarterback Rasheed Griffin was knocked out of the game in the 1st quarter with Air Force leading 10-3. Things looked even more dire as the score remained 10-3 heading towards halftime as Griffin's replacement Greg Maddox got off to a 2/9 start and was fortunate to not have thrown a surefire pick-six after an Air Force defensive back, who had a step on his man, took his eyes off an errant Maddox pass. But from that point something clicked for Maddox as he gathered himself and led the Lobos on a touchdown drive that tied the game 10-10 with 18 seconds before halftime.

The two teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter to send the game to the fourth tied at 13, and that's when things began to really click for New Mexico as the wheels fell off for Air Force. Robby Bolden got things started in the fourth with a 5 yard touchdown run to put New Mexico ahead 20-13 with 6:33 remaining in the game. After an Air Force punt, the Lobos chewed clock and went up two scores after a 23 yard field goal by Tony Thompson. The final nail was hammered into the coffin as Air Force fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Bolden punched the ball in 3 yards out a few plays later and Air Force put the finishing touches on a 30-13 victory.

"What can I say? Greg showed a lot of poise after being thrown into the fire and struggling his first few possessions. Losing our fourth straight would've really hurt team morale, so we needed him to step-up for us and he did so brilliantly. It's good to know we've got a capable backup if Rasheed can't go again next week," commented New Mexico offensive coordinator Harper Holloway.
