Congrats on becoming bowl eligible! This has been an entertaining read because you're using our OS Sliders for one, but also using UNM which is a given struggle/challenge. Keep up the great work!

Re: Hoopla and Hype | Coaching Legacy of Harper "Hoopla" Holloway | NCAA 14

Lobos Season Ends in Heartbreaking OT Loss

Forth Worth, TX -- Just making a bowl game this season marked a step in the right direction for the New Mexico football program. With low expectations by most heading into the season, it's easy to look in from the outside and be proud and satisfied with what the Lobos accomplished this season. Sitting at 4-6 and with their backs against the wall, New Mexico had to fight for its life to just be a part of postseason play. But don't tell any of that to head coach Justin Simmons and his staff, because it won't make their three point overtime loss to Southern Miss any easier to accept.

After Tony Thompson's second made FG of the game gave New Mexico a 13-7 lead in the third quarter, and with their defense keeping Southern Miss in check, it appeared that New Mexico was sitting in good position to finish the season on a 3-game win streak and an Armed Forces Bowl victory. But good ole Uncle Mo can be fickle and have a change of heart in the blink of an eye. Two touchdowns later and just 3:19 remaining on the clock, New Mexico saw themselves down 21-13 and had 86 yards to go to paydirt after a poor decision to return a kickoff deep into the endzone. But quarterback Rasheed Harris and running back Robby Bolden picked their team up once again and methodically drove the ball down to the 8 yard line with just 0:09 remaining on the clock.

"I just told our guys in the huddle to go out and play ball. Don't look it at as having one play left to save their season but instead to just look at as another practice. No fans in the stand and no pressure," said New Mexico offensive coordinator Harper Holloway on what he told his team during their final timeout.

And on that final play the Lobos did just that. Rasheed Harris rolled out to his right with a run-pass option and found a streaking Michael Browning across the back of the endzone. But their work was not done, yet. Now down 21-19, the Lobos needed a 2-point conversion to force OT. Fifth year senior Robby Bolden, who had another big game, answered the bell and pounded his way up the gut into the endzone to tie the game 21-21.

After the two teams exchanged field goals on their first possessions of OT, New Mexico began the second half with the ball. Unfortunately, a stuffed Bolden run on 1st down and two incomplete passes by Harris meant a long FG attempt for Tony Thompson. Thompson, who was an impressive 18/20 on the season pushed the kick wide right. Southern Miss wasted no time getting their field goal unit on the field after a 18 yard completion on 1st down. Southern Miss junior kicker Mark Johnson calmly drilled the 24-yard FG attempt and gave Southern Miss a 27-24 victory.

"It was a tough loss but this team did a lot of growing up this year. I know they can't see it now, but they did a lot for this football program this season and should be very proud of themselves." -Justin Simmons, New Mexico head coach.
