Re: Tough Guys Wear Purple - RT's Minnesota Vikings (M16)

Vikings Gameday Preview: Week 3: The Home Opener (Finally)

The wait is over! Welcome to the new U.S. Bank Stadium everybody!

If you're going to this one, get there early. Kickoff is at Noon, but I would advise everyone to be in their seats by 11:15 AM, because, the show we have planned for you will be legendary. There will be fireworks. There will be legends returning, like Fran Tarkenton, all of the Purple People Eaters (Alan Page, Carl Eller, Gary Larsen, Jim Marshall), Cris Carter, Randy Moss, and Coach Bud Grant. We would bring AP out early, but his mental preparation is much more important. And most of all, there will be noise. Bring your A game fans, this building's for you! Don't let us down. Trust us, this ceremony will be worth it. We can't give it all away, so you have to see for yourself, but it will be great,

What better way to break in this new place than welcoming in America's Team. They've struggled in recent years, except 2014. They have a new coach, a Super Bowl winning coach in John Harbaugh. So now they look to return to their winning ways. They certain have the talent on offense. The defense is a little young, but give them time and a chance, and anything can happen. On one side, you know about Dez and Romo and Witten, but the run game has been bolstered by Reggie Bush, who compliments Joseph Randle well, taking some of the pressure off the QB with the weak clavicle. On the other side, Randy Gregory demands your respect on the front line, and is joined by DeMarcus Lawrence, who is growing into a pretty decent pass rusher. The Cowboys are probably the most experience on defense at linebacker, with the likes of Rolando McClain and Sean Lee. The secondary, though, has some shades of RT's favorite UConn Blue. Byron Jones is a stud and a force to be reckoned with, but Orlando Scandrick and rookie Rashard Boyd, a Husker of Corn, get all the hype at cornerback, while the addition of Micah Hyde makes the safeties better.

Re: Tough Guys Wear Purple - RT's Minnesota Vikings (M16)

Gameday Recap: Vikings 24, Cowboys 17
Vikings dominate home opener, but leave too many points on the field

Who else would you expect to get the first TD at the new place? AP breaks though a couple of wannabe tacklers to get the job done.

As expected under the circumstances, the Vikings started on a roll, and got a 3 and out on the first drive of the game, which the Cowboys poorly chose to receive. Driven by adrenaline, the offense came out, and Teddy told Rudolph to go long, and they hooked up multiple times for over 60 yards total, until AP punched it in for the 1st touchdown in the new stadium, and the 100th of his career. Meanwhile, the defense kept the energy up, and the crowd loud. The Cowboys were running the ball decently, and had more yards on the ground than in the air in the 1st quarter, a truly rare feat against this Vikings run defense. Meanwhile, the Minnesota offense did sputter a bit, so they had to punt following the Cowboys’ second punt of the day. But after that punt, Romo started to find some life. He found Dez, then Cole Beasley, then Terrance Williams, and the Cowboys were in striking distance… until Munnerlyn’s leaping effort over Dez to pick off Romo, a truly remarkable play.

The Munnerlyn pick led to a methodical drive that was marked by the frustration of AP. He was being contained. He’s good enough that he can’t be completely stopped, but he was averaging 4 yards a carry, which was his lowest in a while. So Teddy took matters into his own hands, and shimmied a bit, scrambled a bit, threw a bit, and led the Vikes down the field, connecting with Rudolph to atone for the last scoring drive, when the two couldn’t close their fantastic drive with a TD hookup. But then Dallas moved the ball even better. They were well within Dan Bailey’s field goal range when the two minute warning struck. A couple plays out of the TV break, Romo found Terrance Williams inside the 20, and Gerald Hodges provided a huge hit that knocked the ball loose. It was ruled a fumble on the field, but the booth called for a review and it became clear that Williams was down. Moments later, Romo put the Cowboys on the board by finding Beasley wide open, who ran the rest of the way from 14 yards out. Now, only up 14-7 with 1:17 to play in the half, the Vikings wanted to go. They pushed the ball down the field, aided by a couple of big plays from Teddy’s arm. But, in field goal range, they called the wrong play, and were forced to use their last timeout with 8 seconds left. Coach Freday figured he had enough time to take a shot to the end zone, so he called a play. Teddy saw Charles Johnson, who made an incredible catch, but he was at the 2, and not in the end zone, so time ran out, marking the first of a couple missed opportunities.

But the Vikings did come out firing in the 2nd half, running it a couple times with AP for about 20 yards or so, until Coach Freday called play action, and Teddy found Robert Woods wide open. 65 yards later, he emphatically crossed the plane. 21-7. There was that spark. The crowd was brought back into it, waving their purple towels, a one-time occasion, and as a result of all this energy, the Cowboys couldn’t do much. Two straight sacks from Robison made it 4th and long from the Cowboys’ own 1. The punt was a beauty, and pushed the Vikings back to their own 40. No problem though, as the offense was clicking. Teddy and AP scrambled their way into the red zone, but then Teddy a little too greedy, and made a mental mistake, throwing it right to J.J. Wilcox who was standing at the 15. Another blown opportunity. Luckily, the Vikings got a stop, and in the process, and injured the opposing QB for the 3rd consecutive week. Romo went down, and in came Dustin Vaughan, who threw away his first pass attempt, before throwing one down the left side that Harrison Smith made an absolutely fantastic play on, starting the pick with two hands, then ending with 1 as he hit the ground. The Vikings only managed a field goal however, a rather disappointing drive. 24-7 a minute into the 4th.

On next Dallas drive, Vaughan found some comfort, and started moving the ball. Dez was coming up big when they needed him the most, but the drive stalled in field goal range. They took the 3 points, because it still cut the Vikings’ lead to 14, or two possessions. On the next Vikings drive, AP finally found some life, and started running wild on the Dallas defense. As the Vikings milked the clock, and the two minute warning struck, AP had managed to finally get over 100 yards on the ground, as his push for 2,000 yards in 2016 becomes more and more realistic. But, a missed pass from Teddy to Rudolph on 3rd down, led to a field goal try from Blair Walsh, which was shanked, since the trigger on the field goal gauge was only an inch outside of the desired range.

The Cowboys started throwing up desperation heaves, and off a tipped ball, Smith came up with his second pick, seeming to ice the game, but the Cowboys got the ball back off of a cheesy INT by Teddy, who was just trying to dump it off on a screen pass. It tipped every which way until Orland0 Scandrick came up with it. Vaughan found Dez with under 30 seconds to play, and made the game seem closer than it was, although the score should have been something like 38-7. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. One of these days, we’ll lose these types of games.

Robert Woods starts the second half with an explosive 65 yard dash, and lets the fans know that it's okay to make noise.

H blows everyone away by making this interception. It was definitely the best one Coach Freday has ever seen.
