Re: Live By the Chop - A Rutgers Scarlet Knight Dynasty
"Scarlet Knights Win in Dramatic Fashion, Start Year 1-0"
After settling for a field goal on the first drive of the game, the Scarlet Knight defense gave up an 72 yard touchdown pass from Tulsa quarterback Joseph Calcagni to senior receiver Conner Floyd. From there on out this game was as intense as could be, with players running fast, throwing hard, and hitting harder.
After trailing 17-10, the Scarlet Knights defense found a way to get the ball back to their offense, with a one handed interception from junior cornerback Nadir Barnwell. The offense would not disappoint, as Rutgers QB Mike Bimonte would find his receiver Andre Patton wide open in the endzone.
The 2nd half would continue to be much of the first, teams being neck and neck with Tulsa taking a 34-27 lead with 4 minutes left in the game. That's when the magic happened. Mike Bimonte would lead his offense down the field before connecting with senior receiver Leonte Carroo to put the Scarlet Knights within one.
"I called Mike over and asked him what he thought we should do" said Rutgers Head Coach Kyle Flood "He said to me "Coach, lets win this thing right now".
And so they did as the Coach Flood elected to go for two.
"They knew we were going pass heavy since Paul (James) got hurt" said quarterback Mike Bimonte when asked about how the Scarlet Knights offense adjusted to runningback Paul James leaving the game early with an abdominal strain. "So when we went for two right there for the win, we decided to give it to Desmond instead, and he walked right in".
Desmond Peoples, the backup running back, had only 5 carries on the day, but the most important one was the two-point conversion. "I'm glad that my team had faith in me, and I trusted my offensive line to make my job a lot easier" said Peoples.
The Scarlet Knights will stay at home next week to host the Kansas Jayhawks.
