Re: Crazy Like A Fox: A Minnesota State Screaming Eagles Dynasty
Perhaps one of the more surprising things about the Screaming Eagles’ trip to the valley of the sun was that a steady light rain was falling all afternoon. Yes, rain in Arizona. Minnesota State once again leaned on its ground game, rushing for 319 yards. 249 of those yards came from Carter Fredrickson who now leads the nation in rushing after two games and is garnering himself some award talk.
The real star of the soggy afternoon was the Screaming Eagles defense. After allowing over 200 yards and 17 points in the first half, Coach van Dam and the staff made adjustments that shut down the Sun Devils in the second half. Arizona State could muster only one first down, never crossed midfield and scored zero points while the MSU running attack ground the Sun Devil defense into submission.
Both teams drove down for field goals on their opening possessions of the game and the first quarter concluded in a 3-3 tie with Arizona State driving into MSU territory again. The second quarter had more excitement with the Sun Devils scoring on the first play of the quarter then Minnesota State driving 75 yards in 9 plays to tie the score at 10 midway through the period.
On their next drive, Arizona State’s Mike Bercovici dinked and dunked his team down to the Minnesota State 1 yard line. Facing a 4th and goal, Todd Graham passed up the chip shot field goal and went for the end zone. Facing pressure, Bercovici fired a pass into a crowd but Gary Chambers came down with it to give ASU the lead back with less than 2 minutes to play in the half. Craig Nelson, who had an efficient day, led the Screaming Eagles across midfield but the drive stalled as the half ended.
The second half turned out to be all Minnesota State. Coach van Dam's adjustments seemed to baffle Arizona State from the opening possession of the second half as the Screaming Eagles defenders forced the first of four consecutive three and outs in the second half.
DC Luther van Dam
“They were killin’ us with the short, quick passes in the first half so we just tightened up our coverages and just played better assignment football at all levels. I’m proud of our guys, they played a great half. They grew up a lot today.”
Kenny Bryant, who has been a standout on returns so far this season, got MSU near midfield with a 16 yard return of the ASU punt. Then the road-grading began. The combination of Carter Fredrickson, Kenny Kimmins and the MSU offensive line proved too much for the Sun Devils in the second half beginning with the first possession of the half for Minnesota State. The Screaming Eagles ran it on 6 of 7 plays on the quick 52 yard drive, capped off by Kenny Kimmins’ first score of the season to tie the game at 17.
OC Dauber Dybinski
“The line was great today, it’s a huge deal to run like that against a quality opponent like ASU at their place. We didn’t have to ask Craig [Nelson] to do too much today but he made some critical third downs for us. I was thrilled to get Kenny [Kimmins] more carries today, we need him to take some of the load off Carter so they can both be fresh as we go through the season.”
The possession leading to the tying score was the first of 4 consecutive scoring drives in the second half that resulted in 24 unanswered points for Minnesota State. All while the Sun Devils never crossed midfield, only gained one first down and were shut out in the second half. Shutting down one of the better offenses from the PAC 12 (on paper) for an entire half is no small feat. The Screaming Eagles had one of their most dominating performances in recent memory in the second half. They imposed their will on ASU in all phases of the game while playing a clean game with no turnovers and only one 5 yard penalty.
HC Hayden Fox
“Our kids did a great job. Coach Graham has a good team and to come to their place and dominate the line of scrimmage like we did, especially in the second half even impressed me. I can’t say enough about Coach van Dam and the defensive staff and their halftime adjustments, shutting down a team like that is a big deal. One thing’s for sure after that rushing performance, Stoops and the Sooners are gonna stack the box next week.”
