The Rex Effect- Buffalo Bills Madden 16 Franchise

Introduction:

Hello everyone, I’ve done a few Buffalo Bills franchises here at OS and have had mixed results. I have annoying habit of restarting all the time for one reason or another. I’m going to try and keep this one going until the release of Madden 17. This series will be following the Buffalo Bills and head coach Rex Ryan as they try to capture the Lombardi Trophy. This isn't meant to be a rebuilding project. It is simply me playing as my favorite team and sharing it with you guys.

Fred Jackson, Matt Cassel head Bills final cuts

Buffalo parted with veteran quarterback Matt Cassel after acquiring him in a trade with Minnesota this past offseason. The Bills also made fan-favorite running back, Fred Jackson, one of their final cuts. The release of both Jackson and Cassel were considered to be salary cap related. Many outside observers believe the cap space the Bills saved by parting ways with these veteran players will go toward investing in some of their younger core players. Chief among those players is Pro Bowl DT Marcel Dareus.

Re: The Rex Effect- Buffalo Bills Madden 16 Franchise

Tyrod Taylor named Buffalo Bills' starting quarterback

The Bills made it official, naming Taylor the Week 1 starter for the Bills.

This might not be entirely shocking. Matt Cassel, the ten-year veteran acquired from the Vikings this offseason, was pretty terrible for Buffalo in training camp and a very average preseason.

EJ Manuel wasn't much better and essentially set things up for the Bills to either gamble on Taylor or play it really safe on the ten-year veteran, Matt Cassel. Rex Ryan isn't a play-it-safe guy and the team released Cassel during their final cuts.

Following Cassel's departure and it's clear Rex Ryan's willing to let Taylor, who has looked sharp running and throwing in the preseason, try and become one of the biggest surprises of the 2015 NFL season by winning the job and elevating the Bills offense.

The Bills aren't going to hang their hat on Taylor; this is a team that's built on defense and running the ball. If those two aspects of Buffalo's game are above average, Taylor can be a caretaker who makes plays with his feet and doesn't snuff out drives unnecessarily.

And if he's capable of doing that the Bills could become a dangerous team.

Marcell Dareus signs extension with Bills

The Buffalo Bills today announced that DT Marcell Dareus has signed a contract extension. In accordance with team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Since being drafted with the third overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Bills, Dareus has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier defensive tackles. Earning Pro Bowl nods in 2013 and 2014, Dareus has recorded the second-most sacks among all defensive tackles since entering the league in 2011 with 28.5 quarterback takedowns. He led all NFL defensive tackles in sacks during the 2014 season with 10.

The 6-3, 331-pound Alabama product has started 60-of-63 games played for the Bills, racking up 201 tackles (139 solo), 32 tackles for a loss, 28.5 sacks, 40 quarterback hits and 11 passes defensed in his career.

Re: The Rex Effect- Buffalo Bills Madden 16 Franchise

Bills sign QB Josh Johnson; SS Jonathan Meeks released

The Bills bumped the number of quarterbacks on their roster back up to three on Tuesday with the signing of QB Josh Johnson. Buffalo had just two quarterbacks on the roster in Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel after they released Matt Cassel over the weekend.

Johnson spent most of the 2015 offseason with Cincinnati after signing as a free agent with the Bengals last April. He appeared in one preseason game for Cincinnati going 11-21 passing for 175 yards. The Bengals released him in late August and he was signed by the New York Jets where he appeared in their preseason finale going 7-12 passing for 82 yards. He also ran for 76 yards on seven carries. Like Cassel, he was released by the Jets during final cuts.

Johnson has appeared in 29 regular season games in his career including five starts. He’s completed just over 54 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The 29-year old has also averaged 6.2 yards per carry in his career.

He originally entered the NFL in 2008 as a fifth round pick (160th overall) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnson will wear jersey number 8.

To make room for Johnson on the 53-man roster, Buffalo released safety Jonathan Meeks.

Tyrod Taylor engineered four touchdown drives and Rex Ryan's attacking Buffalo defense put the clamps on Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in a 31-17 season-opening victory on Sunday.

In his first career start, Taylor went 19 of 28 for 198 yards and two touchdowns, including a touchdown pass on the opening drive to Chris Hogan. Not surprisingly, the mobile Taylor also gave the Colts defense fits with his legs evading pressure and adding 44 yards on the ground. Running back LeSean McCoy impressed in his Bills debut too, rushing for 144 yards and two touchdowns to deliver Ryan a win in his debut as Bills head coach.

The Bills built a 17-3 lead by scoring on their first three consecutive possessions in the first half. And Buffalo's defense did the rest.

The retooled Luck-led Colts attack was limited to under 100 yards of total offense before scoring two touchdowns in the final 16 minutes.

Luck finished 10 of 22 for 211 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Rex Ryan lamented there was only one thing missing in making his Buffalo Bills coaching debut complete.

"I think, we should have gotten a shutout," Ryan said. "But when you're playing the Colts, that's not going to happen too often."

In other words, he'll take it.

The Bills stay home next Sunday to take on their division rival, and the defending Super Bowl Champion, New England Patriots.

Rex Ryan's defense did it again. This time frustrating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in a 20-17 victory on Sunday.

The Bills complimented their defensive effort by controlling the clock on offense. Running backs LeSean McCoy and rookie Karlos Williams ground and pounded their way over 160 yards combined.

The Patriots offensive attack was limited to just three points in the first half. They did eventually rally in the second half, scoring 11 points in the games final quarter to tie the game at 17 with just over 2 minutes on the clock. However, it was too little too late and gave Tyrod Taylor too much time (or too little?).

Taylor in only his second career start led a game-winning, clock chewing drive, capped off by a Dan Carpenter field goal with 3 seconds left. Unfortunately though, Taylor was injured on the Bills final "true" offensive play. The play, however, was a quarterback draw on 3rd-and-2 that gave the Bills a game-clinching first down. The additional set of downs allowed the Bills to run out the clock and keep Tom Brady off the field.

With or without their starting quarterback, the Bills travel next Sunday to take on another division rival, the Miami Dolphins.
