Looks like the switch to "Ask Coach" hasn't slowed you down at all! Great win over a tough Bowling Green team.

Nice job with Miami so far. Can't believe Kiel went 41-of-45, even if you were messing with the sliders a bit, those numbers are still incredible. Good luck the rest of the way bjb!

Thanks man! Ya I've won the first few since switching to "Ask Coach," but it definitely hasn't been easy. I could have easily lost both games. I like the feel of having to run plays that I'm not totally comfortable or familiar with. It really makes it a challenge.

And Kiel was a beast. I think only two of his passes hit the ground. One incompletion was a pick and one a drop. I don't think I've ever seen a game like that from a CPU QB.

YEAR 1 - WEEK 12

(Top Left) Kaleb Patterson celebrates his game winning kick. (Top Right) Alonzo Smith bowls over two defenders during his 1st quarter TD run. (Bottom Left) Colin Reardon completes a 54 yard TD pass. (Bottom Right) Nate Becker catches a 14 yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter.

FOOTBALL WEATHER
Patterson lifts Hawks to victory in Snowy Battle versus Kent

Kent, OH – On a day that Miami (OH)’s offense just wasn’t clicking, Senior Kaleb Patterson came to the rescue. The RedHawks kicker knocked in the game winning FG as time expired to boost his team to a 24-21 victory over Kent State on November 16, 2015. The Hawks not only overcame a tough effort from the Flashes, but also a freak storm that blanketed the field in several inches of snow.

A game that was marred by weather also had a controversial call late in the 4th. Down 21-14 and faced with a 3rd and 15 with 0:49 remaining, Kent QB Colin Reardon threw a 22 yard TD pass to Kris Wright to tie the game.

Or did he?

Replay’s showed that while White did catch the ball, he stepped out at the half yard line without the ball ever crossing the plane. RedHawk Head Coach Chuck Martin tried to challenge the ruling, but was unable to.

“That was a confusing play” said Martin. “I’m still not sure why I wasn’t able to challenge. The refs gave me some BS answer on why. It is what it is.”

The RedHawks and QB Drew Kummer still had time. Starting at their own 25 and all three timeouts, Kummer hit TE Nate Becker for back-to-back passes of 7 and 21 yards. Following a timeout, Kummer hit Rokeem Williams for a big 22 yard play with 0:19 seconds remaining. After a 3 yard completion to RB Kenny Young to get the ball to the 19 yard line, Kummer called a timeout with 0:03 remaining. Patterson nailed the 38 yarder as time expired.

“I couldn’t be happier for Kaleb” said Martin. “He’s been consistent for us his entire career. This was his time to shine and he took advantage of it.”

While it was a great day for Patterson, it was equally opposite for Kent State kicker Shane Hynes. The redshirt freshman missed three FGs on the day including two in the 2nd quarter.

Kent State (2-9, 2-5 MAC) seemed at ease in the adverse conditions, while the RedHawks (8-2, 6-0) struggled offensively. Facing the 125th ranked defense in the nation, the Hawks limped to 87 yards rushing on the day for a 2.7ypc average, a season low. The RB due of Alonzo Smith and Young were unable to get anything going on the ground, forcing Kummer to step up.

The RedHawks QB proved to be the savior of the offense, completing 19 of 23 passes for 229 yards and 2 TDs. Becker caught a career high 10 passes for 99 yards, as the weather prevented Kummer from really stretching the field.

Kent QB Colin Reardon was equally as impressive, throwing for 275 yards and 3 TDs. The Flashes came in with the 105th ranked offense but outgained the Hawks 395-316.

The Hawks return home next week to face the 5-5 Buffalo Bulls on Senior Day.

Kris White catches the game tying TD late in the 4th. There was question on whether the
ball really crossed the goal-line

YEAR 1 - WEEK 13

(Left) Anthone Taylor scores a TD in the 1st Qtr. (Right) Sam Martin dives for the end zone on a 16 yard TD reception.

Bulldozed
Hawks have no answer for Bulls RB, lose 35-30

Oxford, OH – The Miami (OH) RedHawks dropped a key conference battle to the Buffalo Bulls 35-30 on Saturday November 23, 2015. The Hawks were heavily favored in the matchup, entering the game with a team record 6 game winning streak and looking to clinch the MAC Eastern Division with another victory.

Buffalo RB Anthone Taylor had something to say in the matter.

Taylor rushed for 159 yards and 3 TDs, adding 5 catches for 48 yards in the Bulls victory. He had three 20+ yards run in his first four carries, and 96 yards at the end of the 1st quarter. It was as dominating performance by the 5th year Senior, and as good a performance as RedHawks head coach Chuck Martin has seen.

“We couldn’t stop the guy” said Martin. “Every time it seemed we had him stopped, he’d break free for additional yardage. I figured after he’d have 300 yards rushing after his 1st quarter numbers. We haven’t had many, if any, RBs do that to us this year.”

The Hawks never led in this game, as Buffalo jumped out to a 7-3 1st lead on Taylor’s 1st rushing TD. He punched in his 2nd TD early in the 2nd quarter, but Miami (OH) was able to respond with a 4 yard Kenny Young TD run. Buffalo responded on the next drive, with Joe Licata hitting Ron Willoughby for 7 yard TD and 21-10 lead. Hawk QB Drew Kummer fought back with a 10 play – 74 yard drive capped off with a 16 yard TD pass to Sam Martin. The Bulls drove down at the end of the half but missed a FG to extend their 21-17 lead.

The 2nd half was more of the same. Buffalo (6-5, 5-2 MAC) added a TD to Miami (OH)’s FG in the 3rd quarter, making it a 28-20 lead. After a FG early in the 4th, the Hawks appeared to catch a break.

Well almost.

With 7:00 remaining Licata attempted a pass to TE Matt Weiser. The throw was behind and Hawk Freshman Safety Matt Merimee intercepted the ball. He appeared to have an open field in front of him and a go-ahead TD. Merimee stumbled some, allowing Weiser to catch him from behind and strip the ball out. The Bulls would recover. Referee’s reviewed the play and the fumble stood, giving Buffalo a 1st and 10.

“That was just a freshman mistake” said Martin. “Matt was holding the ball carelessly, and got it stripped. He was just too excited and saw nothing but green in front of him. I hope he learns from it”

The Hawks (8-3, 6-1 MAC) appeared to catch another break later in the drive. Licata threw what looked like would be a TD pass to Weiser on 3rd and Goal from the 3 yard line, but the ball was dropped. The Bulls went for it on 4th down and went to their money man Taylor, who scored his 3rd TD of the game.

Miami (OH) made one more charge. Kummer responded on the next drive and hit Martin for a 30 yard TD pass with 4:39 left. The defense forced a 3 and Out punt on the next drive, and the offense went back to work down 35-30.

Kummer led a masterful two minute drive, and it appeared the Hawks had the momentum to win this thing. The critical play came when Alonzo Smith broke a 9 yard run down to the Bulls 9 yard line, but a rare clipping penalty by Rokeem Williams brought the ball back to the 18. Three plays later, the Hawks faced a 4th and 5 with 0:37 seconds remaining. Kummer dropped back, but the Bulls had a blanket thrown over the Hawks receivers. He attempted a scramble, but only managed 2 yards before being forced out of bounds. The Bulls would run out the clock to clinch the victory.

Despite the loss Kummer had an excellent all-around game. The 5th year Senior threw for 229 yards and 2 TDs while running for 107 yards on the ground. Alonzo Smith added 85 yards rushing on 16 carries. Licata was equally as impressive on the opposite side, throwing for 316 yards and a TD. MLB Kent Kern led defensively with 11 tackles and a sack.

(Left) Martin hauls in a 30 yard TD in the 4th Qtr. (Right) Kummer is knocked out 3 yards short of the first on 4th and 5 at the end of the game.
