Ole Miss played Vanderbilt in week one, winning 27-20. I'm liking the rushing yards allowed by the Rebels defense. Its something we can hopefully exploit.

OLE MISS 38, FRESNO STATE 0

After throwing his third interception of the game, Ole Miss defensive end Robert Nkemdiche came up to Fresno State quarterback, Chason Virgil.

"Naw, you can't do that rookie, this is SEC country!" yelled Nkemdiche.

The Rebels defense led the way in shutting out the Bulldogs in a 38-0 blowout. The defense forced 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, three interceptions, one defensive touchdown, and limited the Fresno State offense to 126 total yards.

"They're an SEC team for a reason,' Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "Their D-Line was just a force today. We couldn't open any running lanes."

This is Fresno State's first shut out since 2010, when they lost to rival Boise State 51-0.

PLAYER OF THE GAME.. The entire Rebel front seven earns playaz of the game award. They made the Bulldog offense one dimensional and forced a true freshman quarterback to have to win the game with his arm. A couple of names on that front seven. Linebacker C.J. Johnson had two sacks. Defensive end Robert Nkemdiche had one sack and his brother Denzel had three tackles.

KEY STAT.. After gaining 293 yards on the ground against Utah, Fresno State put up 56 rushing yards on 30 total carries for a poultry 1.8 yards per average.

KEY PLAY.. Down 28-0 in the first half, the Bulldog offense had the ball first to start the third quarter. On third down, quarterback Chason Virgil tried to hit receiver Da'Mari Scott on a out route. Ole Miss defensive back Mike Hill shadowed Scott and was in perfect position to make the interception. Hill scooted to the end zone to put the Rebels up 35-0 and ending any hopes of a Bulldog miracle comeback.

EXTRA POINT.. Some feel good news to end the Bulldogs trip to Oxford. Running back Marteze Waller's family from East Point, GA made the 500 mile trip to Oxford to watch their son play.

"It's hard, we miss our boy" Waller's mom said. "I'm happy we got to see him after the game and wish him well for the remainder of the season."

Chason Virgil throws a pick six.

BULLDOG INSIDER
_____________________________________________

Today on the Bulldog Insider we're breaking down the Bulldog defense and the miscues that led to long touchdowns in Saturday's loss to Ole Miss.

Tim DeRuyter is an defensive minded coach. Prior to his first head coaching job at Fresno State, he was the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M under head coach Mike Sherman. *Interesting note: Sherman currently is a head coach at Nauset Region high school in Massachusetts. Quite a fall from NFL head coach to college to high school.

DeRuyter primarily runs a 3-4 defense, but this year he has adapted some 4-3 looks to the scheme. Fresno State has also moved to a more conservative defensive approach, emphasizing a bend but don't break mentality over the blitz pressure packages of years past.

Below are two examples of how the defense running it's base package can convert from a 4-3 to 3-4 look. In the first diagram, defensive end Todd Hunt is lined at a wide-nine technique (farthest from right tackle). Depending on the situation, Hunt can change his stance and become a standing hybrid linebacker. The diagram also shows the different gap responsibilities for the remaining linemen depending on the call.

Moving to the linebackers and defensive backs, you can see from the diagram this year's defensive coverage will be zone heavy. This allows for the defense to know their area of coverage and to keep their eyes on the quarterback.

Now that we've covered a little about the Bulldog defense. Let's go over two plays that Ole Miss used to attack the zone coverage.

The first play we're going to discuss is the 43 yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. As you see the Bulldogs lines up in a 4-3 stance. The call is their base cover-2 package. Ole Miss lined three receivers to the left and had everyone run a go or nine route.

As the play develops, you see the tight end heading up field and baiting safety Shannon Edwards down to help the coverage over the linebacker. As soon as Edwards commits to the inside receiver, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly sees a mismatch as the slot receiver is left wide open over the top. Edwards tries to recover after diagnosing the play, but its too late, touchdown.

On the second play, the Bulldogs come out in their base cover-2 package again. Ole Miss comes out in a balanced run formation. Although the offensive look is different, the play side runs the same routes as the earlier play. This time the play is designed for receiver Cory Core. As the play starts, Fresno State corner Jamal Ellis presses Core inside then drops to his underneath coverage. Safety Shannon Edwards needs to drop back farther outside to catch Core. But like the first play, the inside receiver baits Edwards to help on the inside coverage and he doesn't get enough depth to reach Core on the far outside hash.

Safety Shannon Edwards reaction after allowing second touchdown.

COACH TIM DERUYTER POST GAME THOUGHTS AFTER OLE MISS GAME..
Quote:
On offense we struggled to get going early. Too many three and outs and by the time you know it, your down 28-0. I thought our O-Line struggled at times especially during our base or power-O running plays.

On defense we got to shore up our coverage responsibilities. Shannon was challenged a couple times today and it didn't turn out so well for us. We gotta do a better job of coaching these kids. We'll get at it this week in practice and try out some new things against Abilene Christian.

ON PLAYING BIG NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS..

Quote:
This is something that will always be the nature of Fresno State football. Bulldogs fight and we'll continue to schedule anyone wanting a dog fight.

It's also good for us to get our brand out there and letting kids know what Bulldog football is all about. We had a couple of kids from the Texas area trip to the game to see Fresno State first hand.

Obviously I'm disappointed with the outcome of the game, but we'll get em' next year.

Very difficult loss. But losses like these will prepare the Bulldogs for conference play, where running the table remains a possibility.

AROUND THE NATION
_____________________________________________

GUNNIN' FOR THAT #1 SPOT.. The top three teams remain the same, Ohio State, TCU, and Alabama. There seems to be a bit of posturing this week as both Ohio State and TCU shut out their opponents. Ohio State wrecked Fresno State's rival San Diego State 52-0. TCU stopped playing their starters after the first half as they stomped on Texas Southern (FCS) 42-0. Alabama had the week off.

HEISMAN RACE.. I guess the upset loss to open the season didn't have much effect on Kyle Allen's Heisman race. He still sits atop the ranking, but a couple of Buckeyes are making chase as receiver Braxton Miller and running back Ezekiel Elliot are shooting up the chart.

TROJANS UPSET.. Preseason national championship hype comes to halt for #10 USC as they fall to Washington State 24-21. Washington State made a last second field goal to come away with the win and make USC's climb to the national championship game a little bit harder.
