Blazers struggle in home opener, lose to FCS team
Southern Jaguars put up 500 yards offense in win

September 20, 2015
by Jeffery Barr

UAB returned home from their 2-game road trip, looking to build momentum in their home opener. They thought that playing an FCS team would accomplish this. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned, as the Blazers dropped a 44-28 decision to the Southern Jaguars this past weekend. Southern University is a member of the esteemed SWAC Conference, a conference comprised primarily of HBCU schools. The Jaguars have a successful football history, but have struggled in recent years. But you couldn't tell that by watching them play UAB. The Jags rolled offensively, to the tune of 513 yards of offense & a well-balanced attack. The Blazers couldn't stop the run game, which allowed the play-action pass to be effective. Southern jumped out to an early 17-0 lead and never looked back.

After being effective in relief at Kansas, QB Bjatar Milan struggled against Southern. Coach Kaelyn Willingham yanked him in the 2nd Quarter in favor of RS freshman Xerxes Ragnar. Steve Quiggle sat out this game with a rib injury and his status is "week-to-week." Ragnar came off the bench and played well, throwing for 205 yards and completing 60% of his passes. With Ragnar in the game, the offense became more balanced, which allowed RB Biggie Stevenson to shine. The sophomore put up 81 yards rushing on 17 carries, and 2 touchdowns. Ragnar also added 2 TDs of his own on the ground. UAB played from behind most of the game, but did manage to come back. Problem is, they couldn't finish. Ragnar & Crew took the lead at 28-23 after 3 quarters, before Southern ripped off 3 straight touchdowns in the 4th. UAB couldn't recover, and they lost by 16.

Coach Willingham had this to say about his team's performance after the game:

Quote:
Willingham: "We wanted to get a win today to establish some momentum for the season. Couldn't get it done though. Give credit to Coach [Dawson] Odums. He called a great game. A lot of people would say losing to an FCS team is bad, but that's a great FCS team we lost to today."

It doesn't get any easier for the Blazers. They hit the road for the third time next week to Waco, TX to take on the Baylor Bears, who are currently ranked #3 in the AP Poll. No one expects UAB to win that game, but they would at least like to put up a good effort.

Man...

You know you're bad when you get manhandled by an FCS opponent. I didn't expect to blow them out, but I at least expected to win. We've only got a few winnable games left on the schedule as I see it (one of them being an FCS team). If we don't get things turned around, we could be staring 0-12 right in the face.

Wow that's a horrible game to lose, hopefully your team can rebound and manage to keep your job security up. After the amount of yards that the FCS put up I think Baylor might have a chance to score 100..lol good luck man.

Ouch that one really stings. Hang in there man. You'll get this ship turned around. I love that you are playing with sliders that are this challenging for you. It will make the winning that much sweeter when it does come.

Ouch man...Tough start to the year. I lost my very first game with Tulane to an FCS opponent. You'll get these guys right at some point and look back at that loss and laugh at it.

Looks like you're already stuck on the QB carousel.

Really good presentation brother!
