Miami RedHawks 2015 Season Preview

BY STAFF WRITER • August 14, 2015

HEAD COACH: Chuck Martin, 2-10 (1 year) | OFF. COORDINATOR: James Houston, Carl Houston | DEF. COORDINATOR: Matt Pawlowski

Miami

made the right decision hiring Chuck Martin a season ago, that’s without question. Martin brought immediate growth to the disastrous RedHawk offense that finished at the bottom of the charts with just 2,710 offensive yards on route to an 0-12 season prior to his arrival. Martin and his staff upped that number to over 4,500 in last year’s campaign.

Then Martin’s offensive staff was fired; both George Barnett and his assistant Eric Koehler. The move was questionable by athletic director David Bradshaw especially after their early contributions to the growing offense. Just three days later, Miami announced in a press conference that in-state high school football coach James Houston had been hired. His assistant? It’s his brother, Carl Houston, who comes in with absolutely no coaching experience on his résumé.

To ease up some pressure put on the shoulders of the Houston brothers, we can easily signify that Miami still suffered with yet another losing season in 2014 – it was their fourth straight and eighth in the past decade.

So the squirming storyline that’ll be revealed this season is who was to be accounted for Miami’s offensive success last season; Chuck Martin or former Notre Dame QB Andrew Hendrix? As of now, only time can tell. But as I’ve already stated, Chuck Martin was definitely the right coach to hire. He knows how to win; he wrapped his career up with two national titles and a 74-7 record at Grand Valley State before taking over offensive duties at Notre Dame. That being said, he for sure knows how to move a program – the potential of his presence was put on display last season when half of the team’s loses were decided by eight points or less.

So that leads to another question. Is Miami on its way back to the prominent powerhouse it once was back in the early 2000’s? Without key guys like Hendrix, halfback Dawan Scott, leading receiver David Frazier and three guys up front; this will be the season that answers many questions.

Offense Preview: Miami found a successful offensive within solo-year quarterback Andrew Hendrix who put on a show with 29 total touchdowns last season. Now he’s gone. So are five other offensive starters. This is the year for the new guys to step up. Andrew Kummer and Austin Gearing have reportedly been in battle for the starting QB position since spring practice. Whoever ends up getting the job will most likely be forced to fill in the big shoes of Hendrix as the coaching philosophy will continue to favor the pass. Rokeem Williams and Jared Murphy make up for good targets, the duo of receivers return this season with the team’s leading receiving yardage only behind David Frazier.

The O line hasn’t been a bright spot for Miami in the past years and this season may be no different after they graduated three starters. With halfback Dawan Scott out of the picture, their production will need to step up as the less experienced Spencer Treadwell and Spencer McInnis look to fill in the backfield void.

A position to look out for this season will probably have to be tight end. Newly hired offensive coordinator James Houston has brought in a renewed spread offensive scheme that observers have noted on the high usage of the tight ends. The starting position will be handed to either sophomore Ryan Smith or senior Orlando David. Both enter this season with a combined six receptions, former Notre Dame transfer Alex Welch was expected to start but decided to leave the team earlier this year.

Defense Preview: This is a unit that can either be a huge success this season or nothing short of average. They return many starters this year and most notably junior leading tackler Heath Harding who’ll lead the secondary along with safety Tony Reid and cornerback Marshall Taylor. The entire linebacker clique returns and the defensive line will be manned by J.T. Jones and Bryson Albright – both probable MAC mentions this season.

Their line, however, will be the main thing to watch. Last season they struggled with both stopping the run and getting to the quarterback. Jones and Albright will do their part on the end but it’s up to the middle guys to improve to help this team win more games.

Prediction: The Media has predicted Miami to finish #6 in their eastern division only in front of Kent State. The way we see it, the goal for this RedHawk team should be five wins. If the coaching staff can continue to improve this offense and the defense steps up and plays their part, this Miami team could very well end up making the big jump.

RECRUITING: WHAT THE OHIO?
Rivals.com

The biggest high school recruiting states are typically the Big-3; California, Texas, and Florida. While all three locations continued their annual tradition with an exceptional recruiting database, Ohio has barged their way into the conversation with a 2016 class that'll bring the most exciting football the state will probably ever see at the high school level.

The Buckeye State will host a total of 20 recruits included in our Rivals Top 250, three in the top 10, while five others just miss out in in the Top 300. Here I'll take this time to analyze a few of the respective players as the high school season nears in the upcoming weeks.

Notes and Observations
  • Kent Kern? Projected as one of the top linebackers on this roster but it appears that he'll be spending his senior year as a backup behind sophomore Zack Smierciak... Very questionable decision.
  • Ryan Smith may be in for a breakout season with the RedHawks. Offensive coordinator James Houston's playbook and the relying of tight ends has been talked about all off-season, lets see if Smith can take advantage.
  • The winner of the quarterback battle has been announced. Drew Kummer. He got chances last season but never really impressed, lets see if he can do better as an everyday starter.
  • Kendrell McFadden will indeed be starting at strong safety as a true freshman. He beat out sophomore Tony Reid to conquer the position.
  • Weird case going on at fullback. All of the tight ends have made the move to the position so I can only imagine that they'll be lining up in the run block situations this season.
  • Spencer Treadwell over Spencer McInnis at halfback was something no one really expected. Treadwell rushed for just 55 yards last season while McInnis registered over 200. When it comes to toughness, Treadwell may have the upper hand which is probably the reason he won the position.
  • Depth on the roster -- especially the O & D line -- not looking good.
