2015 MIAMI REDHAWKS SCHEDULE & RESULTS

Spencer McInnis's first career touchdown was tonight's game winner
FIRST WIN A CLOSE ONE
Miami has recorded its first opening season win since 2007 with today's 31-27 victory over FCS opponent Presbyterian. This one came down to the wire as Presbyterian entered the fourth quarter up 20-17 in a very pivotal game. It was clutch running plays that handed the RedHawks the victory.

Former St. Mary's HS head coach, James Houston, made his debut as the team's offensive coordinator in this match up.

"That was a lot harder than it needed to be," he stated. "I'm just glad our guys kept their composure and continued to give it their all out there. This was a great way to see where we're at... luckily it came with a win as well."

Drew Kummer, who was announced a starter last week, played only a handful of plays in this game before he was benched in the first quarter after completing just 1 of 5 of his passes along with two picks, one returned 31 yards for a touchdown. His backup Austin Gearing came in and on his very first pass play completed a long to receiver Rokeem Williams who was took it all the way for 79 yards on the touchdown play.

Safe to say Kummer wouldn't return to this game. Instead, Gearing satisfied a new role with the team after finishing the game with 295 passing yards [21-27] and two touchdowns. Gearing's second recipient was Jared Murphy who he connected with on a wide open 21 yard pass just before halftime to tie the game at 17-17.

"I just went out there and took what I deserved," Gearing said after the game.

Presbyterian was able to quiet the Yager Stadium with their early third quarter field-goal to put them up 20-17 in a quarter filled with failures to convert on 3rd downs for both teams. The Blue Horses would head into the fourth quarter where they quickly added a 15 yard touchdown pass to build onto a commanding 27-17 lead

Miami lucked out and Austin Gearing continued to give out good production as he used his arm to move the ball up the field in bunches to give the RedHawks good field position that led to a 2 yard touchdown by Spencer Treadwell that put them back in the game.

Following the big play, Treadwell remained on the ground of the end zone. Medical teams rushed out and the halfback was transported to the nearest hospital where he was treated for a minor concussion. Treadwell was having a career night before the incident, racking up 20 carries for 108 yards along with the big touchdown play. He'd also been bothered by nagging back injuries throughout the game that kept him sidelined for multiple plays down the stretch.

A forced fumble recovery by the true freshman safety Kendrell McFadden was the result of the Blue Horses next drive. With Treadwell gone, Spencer McInnis was put into the game during a critical situation where he came out on top, capitalizing on a six yard touchdown run that ended up being the game winner for the RedHawks.

"There is always room for improvement," head coach Chuck Martin said. "I know we were able to battle this one out in crunch time but against a good Wisconsin team next week there's no way we're going to be able to gamble like that."

The RedHawks will say their brief goodbye to the Yager Stadium before hitting the road to Madison, Wisconsin in week three where they'll take on the #15 ranked Badgers who come off a surprisingly close 21-14 win over the MAC's UMass.

REDHAWKS NEWS -

Alan Anderson is ranked #10 in the nation
September 2nd, 2015 - Reel Em' In

We may or may not be pushing it but according to multiple sources including Rivals, Miami's head recruiter and assistant offensive coordinator Carl Houston has gained a sudden grasp on Alan Anderson, the nation's #10 overall recruit.

Anderson, the #6 ATH, resides about two hours away from Oxford in Cambridge, Ohio. If Anderson was to commit to Miami it'd be the biggest signing in school history. We are, however, still very early in the season and many schools are expected to come up on the highly touted recruit's list. Rivals places Mississippi State and Vanderbilt ahead of Miami.[READ MORE]

Camp Randall Stadium
Sept 1, 2015 - Going Away

Our RedHawks will prepare to leave the presence of the Yager Stadium for the first time in this early season as they look forward to taking on #15 Wisconsin next week.

The Badgers will be a little less intimidating as they come off a barely surviving win against fellow MAC member, UMass, in which they won by just seven points, 21-14 behind the arm of Joel Stave who threw 261 yards and two touchdowns, most notably a 54 yarder. [READ MORE]

Brison Burris honored by league office
Sept 1, 2015 - Brison Burris Named MAC Player of the Week

With 13 games played in the MAC during week one, it is with honor to our program that the league office decided to award RedHawks' senior free safety Brison Burris as the defensive conference player of the week.

The defensive back forced and recovered a fumble that put the team in position to win the game with Spencer McInnis's six yard game winning touchdown. Burris also had a solo tackle. [READ MORE]

Austin Gearing to start against Wisconsin

BY STAFF WRITER • September 3, 2015

The coaching staff has made the quarterback change official; Austin Gearing will get his first career start in Saturday’s game against #15th ranked Wisconsin.

The switch comes after former QB1, Drew Kummer’s poor opener against Presbyterian in which he threw two interceptions in the first two possessions. Gearing on the other hand came in and put up a career-best for both QB’s with 295 yards and two touchdowns including a long of 78 yards pass on a pass to junior Rokeem Williams.

“I’m really honored to have this opportunity,” Gearing said. “I got the call last week and I went out there and gave it my all. That's what I'm all about. Now it's time to have some fun.”

Kummer ignored media when asked about the situation.

The RedHawks will be at one of college football’s oldest stadiums this weekend as they head out to Camp Randall to face off against the #15th ranked Wisconsin Badgers.

2015 MIAMI REDHAWKS SCHEDULE & RESULTS

Treadwell's potential game changing touchdown in the fourth quarter
DOWNWARD SPIRAL
Although they had a distant opportunity to win this Saturday, the RedHawks fell to the #15 Wisconsin Badgers 28-16 after failing to convert on a two-point conversion that would’ve put the game in just a field goal deficit with a good chunk of time remaining.

“It was tough to see him drop the pass,” Coach Martin said. “We put up a fight but came up just short. I’m proud of the guys to say the least, Wisconsin has always been a great team, tonight was no different.”

For the second straight week, the fourth quarter was jam-packed with action that decided the game. Entering the period down 21-10, Spencer Treadwell wasted little to no time as he brought the team back with his long of the night, a 26 yard rushing touchdown.

The RedHawks would then line up for the 2-point conversion which saw quarterback Austin Gearing breaking out of a sack to find sophomore receiver Sam Martin wide open cutting in only for him to drop the essential pass that would’ve had the game knotted at 21-18.

Wisconsin erased all thoughts of a comeback for the RedHawks the very next possession when wide receiver Alex Erickson took the ball the length of the field for a 99 yard kickoff return to ice the game.

Along with his return, Alex Erickson was named the player of the game with 174 all-purpose yards after finishing with four grabs in the air for 75 yards and a touchdown. Erickson was just one of the three receivers who quarterback Joel Stave connected with for a touchdown. Stave finished 13-21 for 226 yards and the three touchdowns.

Corey Clement added to the ground game with 119 yards on 29 carries.

For Miami, Spencer Treadwell was the go-to man despite struggling scarcely throughout the first half. Following his injury ridden game in week one, the halfback finished with 122 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Austin Gearing started his first career game for Miami and threw for 222 passing yards and a lone 34 yard touchdown pass to Rokeem Williams in the third quarter.

It was however the offensive line that doomed the game for both Gearing and the Miami offense as a whole. Overall they allowed their quarterback to be sacked a total of seven times on the night, four by a single defender, Jake Keefer – Gearing was able to last only until the fourth before complaining about back spasms after he took his final hit of the night.

Fatigued, he talked to media following the game, “Wisconsin is good and all, sure, but that was a bunch of bull. I had about one second to throw the ball every play before getting ambushed by at least five lineman. We've got to step it up.”

Defensive tackle Mitchell Winters was a bright spot for the RedHawk’s defense as he finished with eight tackles with three coming for a loss. Defensive end Bryson Albright added the only sack of the night and safety Kendrell McFadden was able to come up with a fumble recovery in the second quarter.

Miami will look to recover from this loss as they’ll take advantage of their upcoming bye week before returning to the Yager Stadium to host Cincinnati in not only their homecoming, but also the iconic NCAA rivalry, the battle for the Victory Bell.
