Portland Gets Much Needed Bye in Week 5

Coach Shaw says Defense Will Be Main Focus This Week In Practice

Portland, ME - The Portland Trappers will have a much needed bye this week, after opening the season with 4 straight losses. Although the offense has struggled with turnovers, the main problem for the Trappers is their lackluster play on defense. That is something that will change this week according to Head Coach Johnny Shaw

"Nobody wants to open a season with 4 straight losses. And I know that we're a startup program, but that doesn't make it acceptable. It's not acceptable by my standards, it's not acceptable by the university's standards, and it is not acceptable by the fan's standards. Believe me when I say we are gonna get this figure out. Mark my words, we're gonna get this figured out."

A big promise from a coach who's team is ranked dead last in total yards allowed per game (529.8ypg) and pass yards allowed per game (317.8ypg). The Trappers are slightly better at run defense, coming in ranked #100 for rush yards allowed (212.0ypg). It sounds to me like Coach is going to light a fire under his team's butt this week, hopefully it transfers to the field next week for Portland's game at UMass.

When asked about the offense Coach Shaw said that he is "Pleased with Adam's (Walker) play so far" at the quarterback position. He also mentioned that Juco transfer Cecil Smart has been"A huge surprise for us. We knew he had talent, but we weren't sure how well it would transfer to the Division-I level. I speak for the entire staff when I say we have been pleasantly surprised with him so far this season."

The Trappers also nabbed their first recruit of the season in linebacker Kris Williams from Greenville, Rhode Island.

Kris has good size for a linebacker at 6'2" and 209lbs. Slower than most players at his position, but he makes up for it with great play recognition. Will likely see playing time early next fall in the linebacker rotation.

Portland at UMass

Amherst, MA - Pride is on the line as these two cellar dwellers get set to do battle this week. Both teams are winless on the season, and desperately need a win here to even have a chance at qualifying for a bowl game. The teams have one common opponent this season in Penn State. Portland suffered a 70-12 shellacking at the hands of the Nittany Lions in week one, and UMass fell 34-27 to them in week four.

Adam Walker will be without his #1 target this week, as tight end Shannon Steele injured himself in practice during the bye week. Steele has accounted for 348 yards and 3 touchdowns so far this season on 20 receptions. The Trapper's will look to wideouts Kris Ewing and Devron Callahan to pick up the slack. Cecil Smart and Isaiah Penn should have a field day running the ball against the Minutemen's #105 ranked rush defense. UMass' defense is led by Junior cornerback Jackson Porter (80ovr) and Shaki Holines (80ovr) at defensive end.

On defense the Trapper's will have to contain Junior quarterback Austin Whipple (74ovr) and the Minutemen's #91 ranked pass offense. Whipple so far this season has thrown for 632yds with 2 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, while completing only 43% of his passes. This will likely be the easiest test of the season for the Trapper's defense, hopefully they don't disappoint. The ground game is led by senior halfback Shadrach Abrokwah (80ovr) who has racked up a respectable 394 yards on 82 carries this season and 2 touchdowns.
