Trappers hand out first scholarships... ever

The Trappers have officially offered scholarships to a few players in the 2015 recruiting class;

Adam Walker, 1* QB, Melrose, MA
A quarterback is arguably the most important player on the offensive side of the ball, so it makes sense that the Trappers would go after one immediately. Adam is a balanced quarterback with a strong arm, but he lacks accuracy. He isn't someone thats going to beat you with speed, but you have to keep an eye on him because he is capable of tucking the ball and running when he needs to.
Scouts Initial Rating: 56ovr

John Dunn, 2* WR, Brunswick, ME
What good is a quarterback without someone to throw the ball to? At 5'11" and 174lbs John fits the role of a speedy slot receiver perfectly. While he struggles sometimes to catch the ball, once he has it he is hard to catch.
Scouts Initial Rating: 62ovr

J.R. Pino, 2* C, Biddeford, ME
J.R. is a bit undersized for a lineman at 6', 283lbs. With that being said, he does surprisingly well at run blocking. This is a smart kid who could anchor the Trappers line for the next 4 years.
Scouts Initial Rating: 58ovr

Jeff Hill, JUCO 1* DE, Lebanon, NH
As a junior, Jeff will only have one year of illegibility when and if he comes to Portland. However, for that one year he could be a very dominant pass rusher. He's a kid with very good speed for a defensive lineman, and knows how to use his hands to get into the backfield.
Scouts Initial Rating: 68ovr

Freddy Brown, 1* OLB, Melville, RI
At 6'3" and 221lbs Freddy could easily shift into the middle of the defense, but has the speed to contend on the outside as well. He excels in zone coverage but has a tendency to bite on the play action, making him not very good in man to man situations.
Scouts Initial Rating: 58ovr

Trappers offer a few more, get first commit in school history

Portland and Coach Johnny Shaw got great news on Friday afternoon, as defensive end prospect Jeff Hill called to announce that he would be transferring in the spring to play football. The 1* prospect Hill is a 6'3" defensive monster who is playing this season at Div-III Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Hill will only have one year of eligibility left to play at Portland, but he should help anchor the defensive line for the Trappers.
Scouts Initial Rating: 68
Scouts Actual Rating: 67

In addition to nabbing Hill, the Trappers offered a couple more scholarships to potential commits;

Cecil Smart, JUCO 1* HB, Graniteville, VT
Just like Hill, Cecil is also a junior, meaning he will only have one year of eligibility when and if he commits. At 5'10" and 170lbs Smart is not a big running back at all, and will have trouble running the ball up the middle. He is a pure speed back who excels on sweeps and quick pitches to the outside.
Scouts Initial Rating: 51

Thomas Boyd, 2* FB/HB, Winslow, ME
At 6'1" and 243lbs Thomas easily fits the mold of a fullback. Run blocks well, but has trouble with his pass blocking. Boyd is a guy he sees the holes well and could easily fill in as a goal line and short yardage back for the Trappers.
Scouts Initial Rating: 66

Jason Johnson, 1* DT, Windsor, CN
Jason has the size of an NFL nose guard at 6'6" and 315lbs and should have no trouble filling the middle of the defensive line in a 3-4 or 4-3 system. He's a step or two slower than most guys at his position, but is a sure tackler with strong arms and legs. Coming from Canada he'll have to adapt to the 11-man game, but is a smart kid and it shouldn't be much of an issue for him.
Scouts Initial Rating: 54

Sam Tyree, 1* DT, Sayville, NY
At 6'3" and 288lbs Sam is a true pass rushing defensive tackle. He has good hands and a nose for the football. This is a guy that could play inside easily, but also has the speed to shift outside and play defensive end.
Scouts Initial Rating: 53

Offensive Coordinator Named

It seems as if Sam Tyree wasn't the only reason that Coach Shaw was in New York this past week. In addition to making a house visit to Tyree, Shaw also apparently met with Thomas Hayes, the current head coach of the Kenmore West High School Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils finished last season 11-1, falling in the second round of the playoffs. During that season they ranked first in almost every offensive statistical category in their class. The Blue Devils are already on pace this year to surpass the numbers they put up last year.

Coach Shaw announced early this afternoon that Thomas Hayes will be joining the Portland staff, starting as soon as the high school football season is over in the state of New York.

Coach Shaw on Coach Hayes;
Quote:
Thomas is an offensive mastermind. Anyone that knows how to read a stat line can see that, just by what his kids did last season. Tom is a guy I worked closely with while I was at Alfred State. I'm excited to have him here with me in Portland, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with on the offensive side of the ball.

Recruiting Watch

The Trappers picked up 3 more commits this week in QB Adam Walker, DT Jason Johnson, and a surprise commit in TE Shannon Steele. Steele was on the board for the Trappers, but they had yet to offer him an athletic scholarship.

Adam Walker is a surprise gem for the Trappers recruiting team, and should develop into a good quarterback given time. He's still raw around the edges and will definitely experience some growing pains his freshman year, but expect big things out of this kid.
Scouts Initial Rating: 56ovr
Scouts Actual Rating: 67ovr

Defensive tackle Jason Johnson joins the Trappers just one week after they reached out to him with an athletic scholarship. Jason will fill the middle of the Trappers defensive line and should help immensely in stuffing the run.
Scouts Initial Rating: 54
Scouts Actual Rating: 57

Surprise commit Shannon Steele is a JUCO 1* TE who will come to campus as a senior. At 6'5" and 223lbs Shannon is a run blocking tight end, with hands slightly softer than a lineman's. He definitely won't lead the team in catches, but will be a big target in the red zone. We could also see Shannon shift into the FB/H-Back role for the Trappers as well.
Scouts Initial Rating: 65ovr
Scouts Actual Rating: 61ovr
