DETROIT, MI - Opening week of the preseason looked nothing short of a trainwreck for the Detroit Lions. Although the first team looked very good on offense and defense, the depth looked absolutely horrible. Charles Sims III took one run 70 yards and another 44 for touchdowns, Mike Glennon found Everette Blake for an 80-yard touchdown when he got behind the defense on the first play of the second quarter. The offensive line was playing so horribly in the second half that the coaching staff took out the second-string backfield.
"Tim and Theo didn't get benched because of a lack of production, they got benched for their own safety.", Lions head coach Brandon Olsen said after the game. "Don't look at Tim's stats, four of his incompletions were throwaways, one was a drop by Corey and T.J. dropped one too. That means that of his what, 7 or 8 incompletions1 or two were because he messed up. RGIII played decently, sure he had a good amount of yardage passing and a good percentage, but the defense was playing prevent and it was short throws that made plays, nothing special passing. Rushing though, RGIII made some great plays and impressed me, however, we need to work on keeping his eyes downfield; he's such a threat that DBs will leave their man to stop him before he even crosses the line of scrimmage, which is when he should, load up, and get it to that receiver.
One reporter questioned both first round draft choices combining for 4 tackles. "(Steven) Carey only made two tackles but it was out of 6 rushing opportunities and 3 passing plays. He was great in coverage the few drives he was out there, maybe if DeAndre is feeling better next week we'll be able to use Steven more. Jackson (Ingram) did only have two tackles, but he was in coverage 95% of the time. While on a man, he allowed no catches on four targets, so he knows how to break up passes; however he was the only safety sometimes, and one the times was his first time allowing the 80-yard TD, and the big runs were to the side opposite of him, so I don't give him much slack for that."
"We're going to head into Washington next week with the hopes that the second team can put it together. Expect to see more of Tim (Tebow), Theo Riddick, Steven (Carey), and Denard Taylor, who left the game early with a pulled hamstring; he wanted to go back in, but I'm not going to risk that injury in the preseason. Terrell Harvey is also going to be the #4 receiver at this point, overtaking Corey Fuller and T.J. Jones. Austin Graves is going to be the main linebacker for the second team this coming week. Sam (Martin) had only one punt but it was one of the most beautiful punts I've ever seen, it was high arching, landed at the three, then bounced almost horizontal and got downed at the 1. Matt (Prater) missed his only kick, but it was from 58, so I don't blame him. Mason (Finley) will take over kicking duty next week."

Maybe it's just the number? #81 of the Detroit Lions, Joseph Fauria, goes up big and makes the reception over safety for the Buccaneers, Matt Daniels (#30). Fauria took a big shot on the way down, but held onto the ball.

Game Notes
DeAndre Levy will miss his second straight game due to a concussion.
Note: Was playing the game, lost connection to EA so the stats didn't count. Offense was playing well for the most part. 2nd and 4, broken play caused a loss of 15, 3rd and 19, a scramble and pass to Eric Ebron led to a 33-yard first down. Walter Thurmond III played terrible, constantly getting beat then messing up in the run game too. Steven Carey was having a great game.
Thank you, and I agree, Maurice Jones-Drew rocks. Man carried my fantasy team a few years ago, think he led the league in rushing or touchdowns or something that year. Any suggestions or comments, feel free to let me know either here or in PM, looking to improve.
Guessing that the USC dude you drafted is the equivalent of the beast that is Su'a Cravens. Great pick.
RG3 and Tebow is going to cause a huge media storm irl

Su'a Cravens = Steven Carey SC=SC
Exactly why I used Su'a or his pre-draft picture. RG3 and Tebow have been kept away from the media so far, but with the both of them on the roster, I feel like once Stafford throws his first pick they'll be chanting Tebow
LANDOVER, MD - The Detroit Lions have had a rough go about the 2016 preseason so far. After a loss to the Bucs, Washington took advantage of the lost Detroit team. The Lions defense successfully held the opposing offense in check with the starters, however the offense didn't make too many plays happen either. On the first drive of the game, the offense found themselves going for it on 4th-and-2 from their own 24, Stafford dumped off to Eric Ebron and Ebron took the ball 6 yards for the first down. Later on in that drive, it was 4th and 6 and Detroit decided to chance it again, this time, Stafford rushed for 20 yards, only to be brought back by a Ben Jones holding call.
Brandon Olsen said, "It wasn't a good day out there for punting or passing. The rain was coming down hard out there, for the most part, it was better than originally expected." Sam Martin finished with 4 punts for 159 yards, including one punt that went 14 yards and another that went 23. "Not exactly flipping field position, but we are going to work with Sam, get some more power behind his punts in unfavorable weather."
Reporter #1: Who would you say was most impressive this week?
Brandon Olsen: I'd have to say that Denard (Taylor) and Terrell (Harvey) probably impressed me the most on offense, both Carey's (Don and Steven) were impressive defensively. On special teams I'd go with De'Anthony Thomas, his one punt return he took from the endzone, juked one guy out, broke out of the first tackle then juked another guy out before being tackled. Our QBs impressed for the most part too. If nobody has noticed yet, I don't care too much for stats, especially at QB, it's about the film. Sure, Robert (Griffin III) had the most passing yards, but he also let him self get sacked too many times by holding the ball, not making proper adjustments, and trying to make plays when nothing is there. Again, (Tim) Tebow had 3 throw aways, only took 1 sack, and make some pretty good line calls. Matt (Stafford) again, showed his dominance in my system by making the right calls, finding the open receiver, and making proper throw aways, hence the one sack by the first team.
Steven Carey delivering a crushing,fumble-causing hit on Matt Jones in the third quarter.
The second-string defense finally showed that they can make some big plays. Jayron Hosley and Austin Graves reeled in interceptions, Steven Carey, who's starting for Levy got some reps in the third and fourth quarter, forced that fumble on Matt (Jones) along with a few other huge hits. He also had a string of big plays in the fourth. On first and goal while being up 3, he forced another fumble on Matt Jones; even though Mike Ryan recovered, then he and Jacquian Williams got a hurry on Mike (Ryan) to force an incompletion, then on a pass the next play, Steven laid Mike Ryan out and Jackson (Ingram) got the deflection.
The game was ended when Mike Ryan hooked a ball right over Jayron Hosley's extended arms to Jamison Crowder for a 6-yard touchdown. "We're not necessarily worried about Jayron struggling on the outside, he'll normally be in the slot covering receivers anyway so he won't have to worry too much about outside receivers. His interception came from in the slot, we have Darius (Slay) and Quandre (Diggs) on the outside, even if an injury happens, we plan on keeping Hosley on the inside."
Reporter #2: Any updates on DeAndre Levy?
Olsen: Uh, concussions are obviously tricky to deal with, but we expect him to return to practice at some point this week and hopefully be ready for the game on Sunday. If he isn't ready, Steven Carey's just gonna continue starting, if he is ready, Steven's just gonna slide to the bench.
Reporter #3: Don't you think it was kind of a waste to use two first round picks on backups, yet your third rounder is a starter?
Olsen: Well, anything could happen between now and the season, plus they're going to rotate in often. Last season we lost both Tahir (Whitehead) and DeAndre (Levy) for a significant amount of time.
