NAU Makes the Leap to FBS Football

It has finally happened in Flagstaff! After being a member of the Big Sky Conference since 1970, Northern Arizona University has decided to leave FCS football behind for membership in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lumberjacks will compete in FBS football for the first time in the 2012 season, athletic director Lisa Campos announced today. Longtime head coach Jerome Souers, who has been at the school since 1998, will be the man to guide NAU into this new and exciting phase of the program's history.

"This is what our fans have been wanting, and our great administration made it happen," Souers said at the press conference. "Obviously this will be a process for everyone, but to become the third FBS team in the state of Arizona is a great honor and brings lots of responsibility with it. We're determined to succeed. From our AD, to my coaching staff, to our student athletes...everyone is ready to get started."

Northern Arizona's admission to the WAC comes after Louisiana Tech made the move to Conference USA to replace UAB, whose program folded. With all of the changes to the conference in recent years, the current setup of the WAC is as follows: Idaho, San Jose State, Utah State, New Mexico State, Texas State, UTSA, and Northern Arizona. In addition to Louisiana Tech leaving for C-USA, Fresno State, Nevada, and Hawaii have left for the Mountain West Conference. NAU will be first-year members with Texas State and UTSA.

The Lumberjacks went 4-7 in 2011, so the program will really be tested in their move to the FBS. Souers is 76-82 in 14 seasons at the school. NAU's last postseason appearance was in 2003 when they went 9-4 and reached the Quarterfinals of the 1-AA Playoffs which earned the school a final ranking of #9 in the country. Success has been limited since then, as NAU has done no better than 6-5 in the past 7 seasons.

The school has also pledged to make renovations to the Walkup Skydome which currently has a capacity of 16,200. That's just all part of the process of joining the big boys of college football, and Northern Arizona is ready to sharpen their axe and make their mark.
