Re: Music City Blues: Tennessee Titans
Archives | Roster | Statistics | Standings | Schedule Dorial Green-Beckham hauls in one of his four catches on the day, a 20-yard grab here. Titans Drop Third In A Row By Brad Frederickson Titans Insider HOUSTON -- If only the Texans could play Tennessee every week. With Tennessee's 29th-ranked defense in town, two Texan quarterbacks combined for 330 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-29 blitzing of the Titans. Arian Foster's sixty-eight yard run on the first play from scrimmage set the tone for the game, as the much-maligned Blaine Gabbert tossed a short touchdown to Mohamed Sanu just two plays later. Houston extended the lead with another Gabbert touchdown pass, this time to tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz for eight yards. Tennessee would dent the scoreboard on their following drive as Marcus Mariota completed a quick out to Justin Hunter, who slipped the tackle and out-ran the Texans' secondary down the sideline for a forty-seven yard score. Bishop Sankey, who started the first six games of the season prior to the Latavius Murray trade, found paydirt on a three-yard score, marking the first time Tennessee had scored on back-to-back drives since Week 1 against Chicago. The score tied the game at 14. Gabbert would go down on the next drive after Quinton Coples hit him just after releasing a pass, which ended up being incomplete. He left with a shoulder injury, and didn't return. No word was given on the extent of the injury. Dominique Davis, who was actually the third-string quarterback to begin the season, relieved Gabbert and went on to complete 19-of-24 passes for 220 yards, mainly on easy throws; but hit a couple of big throws downfield late to help seal the victory, including a 41-yard scoring strike to Sanu. It was one of his three touchdowns on the day. Davis' first two touchdowns came in the second quarter, a three-yard toss to Fiedorowicz and a ten-yard strike to DeAndre Hopkins. Those two scores put the Texans back up two scores, 28-14, before Ryan Succop hit the first of his three field goals right before halftime to give Tennessee a slight lift heading into the half. "Dom really stepped up when we needed him to," said Texans coach Bill O'Brien. "It's nice to know that you can count on him if he has to play." Succop then hit field goals of thirty-seven and thirty-four in the third quarter to pull Tennessee to within five, 28-23 at the end of three quarters. On both of those drives, Mariota had driven the Titans inside the Texans' ten-yard line for goal-to-go situations, before poorly-timed sacks knocked them out of scoring range, and they had to settle for field goals. "It was extremely frustrating to be able to move the ball, only to just stall out when we moved the ball into the red zone," Titans coach Chuck Pagano deadpanned. "We didn't do a very good job of protecting our quarterback, although we didn't execute very well in other parts of the game as well." Indeed, as the offensive line surrendered five sacks, and Mariota was flushed from the pocket often. To his credit, he was able to gain forty-six yards, mainly on scrambles. However, he was knocked down another half-dozen times, and took a hard hit going out of bounds on one of his runs. "The knee held up pretty well," he said after the game, referring to the sprained knee he suffered in last week's loss. "It's a little sore, but that's to be expected. Definitely better now than it was last week." There's a pretty quick turnaround this upcoming week, as they'll face Jacksonville for the second time in eleven days on Thursday Night Football. This time, they'll get them at home, where Tennessee has their only two wins of the season. Kickoff from Nissan Stadium will take place at 8:20 PM Eastern time, and will be simulcast on the NFL Network and CBS.

Re: Music City Blues: Tennessee Titans
November 8th, 2016 Brad Frederickson, Titans Insider TITANS MIDSEASON MAILBAG Tennessee limps into the halfway point of the season with a 2-6 record, including three straight road losses to Minnesota, Jacksonville, and Houston in that order. They'll kick off the second half of the season on Thursday night at home against the Jaguars, whom they just faced nine days ago in a 24-17 loss on the road. What is the top storyline for the Titans going forward into the second half of the season? Our readers have been sending us numerous questions over the past few days, and we'll attempt to answer a handful of those questions in the Mid-Season Mailbag. Tyler (Nashville) asks: In the middle of another disappointing season, what are you looking forward to the most in the second half of the season? Brad Frederickson: It has to be Marcus Mariota's development. I mean, is there anything that's more important to this franchise going forward at the moment? I think we all forget that he missed a significant amount of time due to injury last year, so he might be a bit behind in his progression. At times this year, he's looked great. At other times, he's looked like a rookie. I don't think it's out of the question that if he doesn't take a step forward in the second half, that the staff may begin to consider a Plan B after this season. Let's hope it doesn't come to that; I really like Mariota's potential and the flashes of brilliance; but we need a full season's worth of evidence, and he needs to prove he can stay healthy for a whole season. Sam (Spring Hill, TN) asks: What's your breakdown of the Murray trade? BF: I didn't like it much at all. I know there are most that disagree, such as most of the talking heads and analysts on ESPN and the like, but second-round picks are worth their weight in gold because you can pick up first-round talent in the first ten or so picks of the second round (see: Randall, Quinterrius). It's also not a good trade from the standpoint that it's not a move that's likely going to make a difference this year. However, the possibility is high that they re-sign Murray this offseason to an extension, which makes the trade worth it if he can produce like he did Sunday. That kind of production IS worth a second-rounder. That's been the knock on him. Can he do it week in and week out? That remains to be seen. David (Franklin, KY) asks: This may be a bit early, but what is the biggest need going into next season? BF: There's still a lot of needs to address, but they absolutely have to address the secondary and overall defensive depth. The front seven is good to very good in each position, but the secondary (especially the corners) are aging. It looks like they've hit well with Quinterrius Randall and J.C. Green both being Defensive ROY candidates, but both Jason McCourty and Perrish Cox appear to have lost a half-step or so in the past few years. They've compensated by playing more zone in recent years, but it's allowing the opposition to convert third downs at a higher rate, and it keeps an already thin defense on the field longer. Fortunately, depending on who leaves college early, this could be a very, very deep draft class of defensive backs. And, it's not a need per se, but they have to figure out a way to get Delanie Walker re-signed. He's been a huge boon for Mariota this year, and losing him after this season I think would set back his development considerably. Steven (Nashville) asks: What can the team do to address the poor fan experience at the stadium? BF: Obviously, the number one thing they can do is win games. When Steve McNair, Derrick Mason, and Eddie George played for them back in the late 90's and early 2000's, the stadium had the same issues and no one seemed to care. They won games. Now, the ownership group has finally taken care of the horrendous downtown parking situation; and they've added more and better concession areas, but there's still work to do. The atmosphere at Thursday night's game should be great despite the team's record; as when Nashville is featured nationally, the fans tend to show up in droves. Evan (Mt. Juliet, TN) asks: Give us your analysis on where the Titans are at in the Robinson/Pagano regime. Behind, on schedule, ahead? BF: Get back to me at the end of the season, and I can give you a better idea. The schedule is somewhat favorable down the stretch with five home games (more on that later), but this team hasn't proven aside from beating Kansas City that they can hang with better teams regardless of the venue. If you held a gun to my head, then I'd say they're probably right on schedule because of all the holes this team had. It's going to take more than one, maybe two years to fix. Scott (Nashville) asks: Predict the final record at season's end. BF: I'll go 5-11, which is an improvement over last season and honestly, would mark some tangible progress. No matter how good the atmosphere is Thursday night, I don't see them beating Jacksonville. Miami is a poor offensive team, but is stout defensively and will be tough to move the ball on. They also still have the Colts twice, the Packers, and Broncos; all teams that can move the ball prolifically through the air. I think they go 3-5 down the stretch with wins over San Diego at home, Oakland on the road, and I'll pick them to knock Miami off at home in an upset. |
