Re: Gunpowder And Crab Legs

The pace of updates is going to slow down for the rest of the month.

I live in one of the markets where C-u-n-tcast has imposed a data cap, and I hit my 300GB yesterday. Between now and the end of the month I'll get charged an extra $10 for every 50GB. This is how they punish you for getting your programming from streaming and antenna.

Game Notes
A three game road trip begins with the Bucs going to the ATL, where there will be a meeting of teams with just one win between them. The Falcons can ill afford go go 0-3- if they do so, there season will most likely already be cooked. Meanwhile, if the Bucs can manage to achieve a modest 2-game winning streak, they will have matched 2014's win production in just three outings. Tampa Bay has won consecutive games as recently as 2013- although it was a 4-12 campaign, three of the four wins came in Weeks 10 through 12, including a win over the Falcons. The Bucs have not been 2-1 since 2011, when they reached 3-1 before going 1-11 the rest of the way, while the Falcons have not been 0-3 since 2007.

Re: Gunpowder And Crab Legs

Game of Runs:
A Song of Matty Ice on Fire

In a game of scoring runs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers overcame a 14-0 deficit and blew a 24-14 lead in dropping a 28-24 decision to the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome. All four of Atlanta’s scores were touchdown passes by Matt Ryan, who, despite a mid-game slump, compiled a passer rating of 123.7 with 22 completions in 29 attempts for 331 yards and directed the game-winning touchdown drive. It was a desperately-needed first win of the season for the Falcons, who put the Buccaneers, also now 1-2 but 0-1 in the division, in their accustomed spot NFC South cellar.

An interception by Keith Tandy ended the opening series and gave the Bucs the ball at their 44, but on their first play from scrimmage Tyson Jackson and Brooks Reed forced a Doug Martin fumble that was recovered by defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. The replay booth called for a review and reversed the ruling on the field, but Tampa Bay went three and out. Rookie punter Jake Schum placed his kick out of bounds at the 6, but Lavonte David dug the Falcons out of that hole by getting flagged for a facemask infraction in tackling Devonta Freeman. Atlanta then marched the length of the field, scoring on Ryan’s 8 yard TD toss to Levine Toilolo. The score remained 7-0 until the first play of the second quarter, when Ryan hit Julio Jones for a 6 yard score. That was the conversion of a Mike Glennon interception thrown to Robert Alford, which gave the Falcons the ball at the Tampa 48. The Buccaneers then finally got their offense in gear, driving 77 yards in 12 plays and getting on the board with a 1 yard Martin run. At the first half’s two minute warning Atlanta was in a 2nd and 9 at the Buccaneer 33, but on the next play Mike Jenkins tied the score with a 66 yard pick-six.

The Buccaneers punted out of the initial possession of the second half, but Jacquies Smith recorded a sack-fumble combo and George Johnson got the recovery at the Atlanta 18. The turnover was converted into Glennon’s 9 yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy Jr. for a 21-14 Tampa lead. A three and out by the Falcons was followed by Connor Barth’s 22 yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-14, but unfortunately the Bucs were done scoring and not finishing that red zone trip with a touchdown was going to prove costly. A minute and a half later it was a field goal game when Laron Byrd burned Bradley McDougald deep for a 76 yard score. The Bucs punted out of their next series, after which the Falcons marched to a go-ahead score on Ryan’s 5 yard pass to Jacob Tamme, and there was still 10:13 remaining in the game. The Bucs then turned the ball over on downs at the Atlanta 39 when a Glennon scramble came up 2 yards short. The Falcons went three and out, but only because of a false start- they went from 1st and 15 to 4th and 1 before punting. When the two minute warning arrived, the Bucs still had the ball and were in a 2nd and 8 at the Falcon 30. That situation evolved into a 4th and 15 at the 24 with 1:06 to go, whereupon Glennon was sacked for a turnover on downs, and from there the Falcons were able to run out the clock to close out their first victory of the season.

Game Notes
Heinz Field is not where you want to be going when you're hoping to avoid falling to 1-3, especially with the Steelers likely to be more surly after suffering their first defeat of the season than they would be at 3-0. But that's the hand the Bucs have been dealt and there's nothing to do but play it.
