College GameDay Spartans set to open season, host Kent State Week 2, 2005 Kent State @ Michigan State (0-0)     (0-0) C -Overall- B D+ -Offense- B- C+ -Defense- B Well, football fans, it's finally here! The beginning of a new college football season. Bringing hope, passion, and pride to new heights yet again. Officially week two, however, Michigan State will be opening their season at home against the Kent State Golden Flashes, also competing in their first game. The Spartans get a seemingly easy game at home right out of the gate. Think of it as a morale booster. Coach Smith may not be exposing the entire playbook today due to the blowout potential, and speaking of which, we may see some of the reserves by time the fourth quarter rolls around. Watch out for Javon Ringer out of the backfield in this one. The freshmen tailback will get some looks most likely once the game is out of reach and Coach Smith would love to get a look at his recruit early on this season to know what he's working with. Don't be surprised to see another freshmen, Brian Hoyer, get some snaps either, from the quarterback position. Another highly touted recruit, Michigan State has got to figure out if this is going to be a building year or if they have enough to make a run and be competitive - so watching to see these two perform in real game situations will say a lot about the direction of this program's future.

Week 2, 2005 Too close for comfort! The Spartans fell behind early and took a 13 point deficit into the locker room at halftime, but retaliated with a second half rally to top Kent State and save face in the process. It was efforts from Drew Stanton's multi-touchdown, 300-plus yard game that propelled the Spartans to victory. Although no turnovers were forced, the defense held stout by shutting down the Golden Flashes offense in the second half without a single point surrendered. Thanks, appreciate it! Yeah really caught me off guard. I was expecting a blowout and they run up 17-0 in the first quarter on us. Luckily we were able to recover quickly and figured out how to stop them in the second half.

They definitely came out of nowhere ready to play. Especially on our home turf. Super surprising, but I'm glad we pulled it out.
