Post Game Report

Spartans survive scare in season opener

In what was expected to be a one-sided affair on their home turf, the Michigan State Spartans had to overcome a two-score deficit in the second half to overcome a lackluster first two quarters.

"We overlooked them, we certainly did", commented coach John L. Smith. "We weren't ready and got punched in the mouth for it", he continued.

The Spartans clearly were not expecting the fight that was put up by the opposition and it showed. Going three-and-out on their first three drives and settling for a field goal seconds before the end of the first quarter salvaged hope after giving up 17 straight points to the lowly Golden Flashes.

Many college football insiders have already been questioning how good this Michigan State team could be, and yesterday's game may have the team questioning itself as well.

"Man, we have got to be better out there. Have to hustle more, make better plays, and just execute. It's football, man", said standout quarterback Drew Stanton.

Stanton stood above the rest and propelled his team to victory by throwing for two touchdowns in the comeback and set up scoring opportunities thanks to his 307 yard performance.

The Spartans get the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii next week, expect them to be better prepared.

Mich St -- 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 || 0

Recap Summary

Spartans shocked at home in shutout

Drop it like it's hot! The Spartans offense was abysmal, dropping pass after pass, as well as fumbling the rock multiple times. It was a defensive battle for most of this one. And despite creating four turnovers, Michigan State was unable to generate offense and dropped this game in an upset to Hawaii.

The quarterbacks in this one combined for a lousy 32% completion rate, which really tells the story here.

Michigan State had a chance in the second quarter to take a three point lead, but missed a 47 yard field goal which would set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Spartans had one standout performer in David Herron. The linebacker recorded three interceptions and recovered a fumble. One of the greatest single game performances for a defensive player ultimately went to waste. Next up for the Spartans is Notre Dame, a tough test on the road.

Yeah we're struggling for sure out there. Still finding the offense.
