RECAP: UNLV BLOWS LEAD, LOSES TO MINNESOTA IN SEASON OPENER
By David Hyde on August 29, 2013 at 11:01p
UNLV’s season-opener at Minnesota showed something beyond promise, but with a difference a halftime break can make, the Rebels crumbled.
An 18-point lead – nearly 24 – swiftly went down the drain as the Golden Gophers staged its second half come-from-behind victory Thursday night at TCF Bank Stadium, winning 27-24.
For UNLV, it was their 23rd consecutive road loss, three short of the school record set from 1994 to 1998. UNLV Rebels at Minnesota Golden Gophers | Aug 29, 2013 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | F | UNLV (0-1, 0-0 MWC) | 14 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 24 | MINN (1-0, 0-0 BIG 10) | 0 | 6 | 14 | 7 | 27 |

BOX SCORE: UNLV @ Minnesota
“We were there emotionally, and that's sometimes the X-factor in these opening week games,” UNLV coach Bobby Hauck said. “But once we got out in front we, of course, got too comfortable and with Minnesota being a well-coached team, they were able to make adjustments and take advantage.”
Hauck said he preached to his players not to let up coming out of halftime, especially after their opening performance seemingly gave them every right to after outnumbering the Gophers 402-169 in total offense while coming just short of posing a shutout.
Nick Sherry had already thrown for 309 yards, ran in for a score, and connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Torry McTyler. The second half told a much lesser story, however, as he was sacked on four of six occasions while throwing just an additional 108 yards as the Rebels’ offense fell out of sync.
Despite the loss, the sophomore finished 30-of-44 for a career-high 417 yards passing to go along with his two first half scores.
As the Rebels’ grew pass-happy, running back Tim Cornett saw a drop off in touches, recording only 16 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. He had multiple runs for good amounts of yardage – including a 26-yarder – but his finishing numbers were flawed by tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Said Hauck: “It starts up front in the trenches. We had some good series up front, other times not so much. That’s something we can really assert as a positive come time for review and film next week. This game will provide us a lot of details on how to improve.”
Minnesota’s Phillip Nelson overcame a sluggish first half and tossed the ball for 240 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception while adding 92 yards rushing.
Donnell Kirkwood rushed for another 127 yards and ran in a touchdown along with fullback Mike Henry.
