Game Notes
One might think that this road trip to the Bay Area provides the Rams with an outstanding opportunity to get back into the W column after dropping their last two games. But those losses were to sub-.500 teams and the Niners have swept the Seahawks, so win no. 7 of 2018 is not a given here. Then again, San Francisco's defense has been scored on more than a hooker on a Saturday night, giving up a league-worst 32 points per game, so the Rams really will have no excuse if their skid continues.

Re: California Dreamin'

The Defenses Rest

With Jared Goff throwing for 387 yards and 4 touchdowns against the NFL’s worst secondary, the Los Angeles Rams put up 41 points on the league’s most generous scoring defense. Those numbers against the host San Francisco 49ers would seem to indicate a rout, but the game was not quite that. All of LA’s points were scored in the last three quarters after the Niners were spotted an 8-0 lead, and the Los Angeles defense allowed Jimmy Garoppolo to play like the QB San Francisco and its fans were hoping for when he was acquired from the New England Patriots at the behest of head coach Josh McDaniels. Despite no. 1 WR Curtis Samuel being out of the lineup, Garoppolo bested Goff by 2 yards and hurled 3 TD passes, and the 49ers lost by “only” 12 points after trailing by as many as 19. All told, the two teams accounted for a total of 969 yards of total offense.

The win was a costly one for the Rams, who had two players go down with injuries. First round pick James Washington suffered the second injury of his career, a broken foot. Washington’s recovery time is currently estimated at two months and the Super Bowl is 9 weeks away. If he’s to see any more action as a rookie, LA will have to make it to SB LIII. Also hurt was defensive end Dominique Easley (broken wrist). The early prognosis is that Easley could play again before the regular season ends.

Dominique Easley broke his wrist on this sack of Jimmy G.

Trailing 8-0, the Rams broke their goose egg with Alshon Jeffery’s 19 yard TD reception.

Alec Ogletree hammers Jeremy Kerley for a breakup.

Another denial for Ogletree, this time vs. rookie Simmie Cobbs Jr.

Trumaine Johnson bats away a pass intended for Eddie Royal.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THE FAB 5, WEEK 12

1. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (9-2)

Forget Carson Wentz, this is Leonard Fournette’s team.

2. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (8-3)

Some chinks in the teflon, but capable of beating anybody.

3. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (8-3)

Loss to Pats kept them from ascending to the top rung.

4. MINNESOTA VIKINGS (9-2)

With Bridgewater gone, this ranking may be too generous.

5. GREEN BAY PACKERS (8-3)

When they’re good, they’re great. But they’ve lost to the Dolphins, been taken to the wire by the Jets, and into overtime by the 49ers.

Leaderboards

"IT'S OVER”: BRIDGEWATER SUFFERS CAREER-ENDING RE-INJURY

Minnesota signal-caller Teddy Bridgewater had been playing on borrowed time since his remarkable return from the gruesome knee injury he sustained during 2016 training camp. Against the Jets on Sunday, time caught up with him on a sack by Lamarr Houston. Hit from behind while his previously-injured knee was being buckled from the front by downed blocker Alex Boone, Bridgewater sustained a quadruple tear- the ACL, MCL, PCL and patellar tendon. The question now is not when, but if, he will ever be able to undertake any kind of athletic activity. A return to football is “out of the question,” said a teary-eyed Mike Zimmer. “It’s over for Teddy, and I’m heartbroken.” They severity of Bridgewater’s injury deflated the Vikings so badly that they fell apart against the Jets, losing for only the second time this season. Considering that Case Keenum lost a starting gig to a rookie Jared Goff, Minny had better hope it can rely upon its stout defense and the one-two punch of Adrian Peterson and Alvin Kamara to further its playoff ambitions. It’s already a sad turn of events which has the potential for becoming worse if the Vikes fall out of playoff contention.

Vikings Poach QB Mike White From Houston's Practice Squad

Teddy Bridgewater’s injury left Case Keenum as the only active quarterback on the Vikings’ roster, and while they have rookie Anu Solomon on their practice squad, they turned to an outside source to acquire Keenum’s backup. Rookie Mike White was pilfered from the Houston Texans’ practice squad. White, who began his college football career at USF but transferred to Western Kentucky to play for Bobby Petrino, was selected in the sixth round, but failed to make a Texans 53-man roster that included first-rounder and Rookie of the Year contender Mason Rudolph, Sam Bradford and Tom Savage. Houston head coach Bill O’Brien said “We hate losing Mike and we considered signing him to the active roster in order to hold onto him, but we couldn’t justify sacrificing any of our active players to carry a 4th QB. It’s a decision we may come to regret, but this game is full of tough decisions. We hope he’ll be a silver lining for them. We certainly think he has the potential to be that, and they obviously do as well.” White was already known to Zimmer and the Minnesota scouting department. Zimmer said that White would have been the team’s 7th round selection had he been available.

Damn, that's a shame for Bridgewater's career to come to an end in such a fashion.

Hate to see career-ending injuries but it is part of the game. I'm very interested to see how the QB position in Minnesota plays out.

Still some doubt about him IRL, it could be a similar situation to Marcus Lattimore and he won't be able to play effectively. Even if he comes back, I think a similar injury to the same knee would be a career-ender.

Mike White, 6th round pick getting a shot due to a starter's injury. Sounds vaguely familiar.

Re: California Dreamin'

Echoing the sentiments of the others about Bridgewater. Very unfortunate indeed...

As for the Rams, nice dub over the Niners. Goff played a superb game, despite the bad defense he was going against. I'll be interested to see how the playoff picture shakes out with you guys at 7-4 now. Starting to get close to that time of year..
