Re: California Dreamin'
Since finishing the first half of their 2018 season with a record of 6-2, the Los Angeles Rams have faltered into a 1-3 slump in which they have beaten only the San Francisco 49ers. A late defensive letdown was once again the culprit in a 27-23 loss to the visiting Denver Broncos. The LA defense managed to keep the Bronco offense out of the end zone for the first three quarters of the game and for the first 12-plus minutes of the 4th, and yet a 23-13 lead was squandered. And it was another imagination-defying loss for a team that was downed by a kicker’s pass just two weeks ago. In the waning moments of the game, LA was up 23-20 and the Broncos were in range to send the game into overtime, but to the bewilderment of every observer, including the television broadcast team, the Denver field goal unit never came out. On the final play of the game, the Rams got caught expecting Denver head coach Vance Joseph to let let the clock wind down to a couple of ticks before burning his final time out and sending in Brandon McManus to knot up the score to force OT. Instead, the ball was snapped with the clock still running at 00:02, and Tony Romo hit tight end Bucky Hodges for a 17 yard game-winning TD. The move only looked brilliant because the LA defense let it work. Had it failed, Joseph would be getting raked over the coals by the NFL media and an angry Bronco fan base. With his team sitting in the AFC West cellar at 5-6, however, Joseph apparently felt there was’t much to lose by going big or going home a loser. The bamboozling would not have happened, though, if the LA defense had not let Denver anywhere near the red zone, and the team’s propensity for giving up late scores is something which must be addressed. With only 49 seconds remaining in the first half, a McManus field goal put the Broncos up 13-6, with Denver’s touchdown coming on Brandon Marshall’s first quarter return of a Jared Goff fumble. After a quick three and out by the Rams, the Broncos tried to squeeze another score out of what time remained before the break, but Lamarcus Joyner offset Denver’s defensive touchdown with a 43 yard pick-six. On the second play of the second half, Todd Gurley broke off a 77 yard touchdown run, and the only other score of the third quarter was a Greg Zuerlein boot that gave LA a 23-13 lead. At that point the Rams had outscored the Broncos 23-3 since falling behind 10-0. With 4:43 left in the game, and with the score still 23-13, Robert Quinn picked off Tony Romo in the end zone. Instead of capitalizing on the turnover, the LA offense went three and out, and the following series yielded Denver’s first offensive TD, a 46 yard hookup between Romo and rookie Deon Cain. With 2:13 to go and in possession of all of their time outs, the Broncos kicked away. Los Angeles was unable to run out the clock, and the game-winning drive ensued.
T.J. McDonald chases down Tony Romo to record his first sack of the season. Robert Quinn’s turn. Lamarcus Joyner’s second pick-six of the year made the halftime score 13-13. Thanks to Todd Gurley’s 77 yard TD run, the Rams were up 20-13 before the Broncos got a second half possession. After Cordarrelle Patterson was denied a TD catch, LA settled for 3- and ended up losing by 4. Quinn’s end zone pick should have helped the Rams put the game away, but another late collapse was forthcoming. Highlights (8:22): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1RA7EwW-gg&t=3s |

Re: California Dreamin'
1. NEW YORK GIANTS: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville Do they start him if Eli doesn’t retire? Would Eli end up elsewhere? 2. CINCINNATI: Jaylon Jones, CB, Ole Miss Picking six spots higher than in the previous mock, the Bengals shift gears and take the best player in the class because Darqueeze Dennard has failed to live up to his first round status. 3. SAN FRANCISCO: Chris Evans, RB, Michigan 4. CHICAGO (f. JACKSONVILLE): Albert Huggins, DT>DE Clemson 5. INDIANAPOLIS: Bobby Okereke, ILB, Stanford A higher pick this time sees the Colts address a different glaring need, with the hope of landing a solid OT early in the second round. 6. NEW YORK JETS: Mike Weber, RB, Ohio St. A change from going DE in the previous mock. Matt Forte is 32 and it’s becoming more clear that Joe Mixon probably isn’t capable of moving to the top of the depth chart. 7. MIAMI: Wilton Speight, QB, Michigan A drop of 5 spots, but they still get their man. 8. NEW ORLEANS: Mark Andrews, TE, Oklahoma A move up two spots doesn’t help the Aints get Evans, Weber or Speight, so they stick with Andrews. 9. BUFFALO: Ahmmon Richards, WR, Miami Sammy Watkins’ propensity to get hurt means the Bills lack a true no. 1 wideout. 10. DETROIT: Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio St. Same position, different player. Bosa’s stock is rising and some scouts think he’ll be better than big brother Joey. 11. WASHINGTON: Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech 12. ARIZONA: Toby Weathersby, OT, LSU 13. OAKLAND (f. CLEVELAND): Deebo Samuel, WR, South Carolina 14. DENVER: Connor Williams, OT, Texas Because in this mock the Broncos have a higher pick and Williams is still on the board, they take him instead of a WR. 15. HOUSTON: Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida 16. CHICAGO: Michael Dieter, C, Wisconsin 17. SAN FRANCISCO (f. BALTIMORE): Brandon Fanaika, G, Stanford 18. PORTLAND: Andrew Wingard, FS, Wyoming 19. DALLAS: Shaquille Quarterman, MLB, Miami 20. SEATTLE: Byron Cowart, DE, Auburn 21. LOS ANGELES: Ryan Bates, G, Penn St. 22. OAKLAND: Reggie Walker, DE, Kansas St. 23. ATLANTA: Isaac Nauta, TE, Georgia Picking later than previously and with Ryan Bates off the board, the Falcons address another position of need. Production at TE has been lacking since Jacob Tamme’s retirement. 24. CAROLINA: Brian Burns, DE, Florida St. 25. NEW ENGLAND: Demetris Robertson, WR, Cal This is an organization that does not reach, so no RB here with Mike Weber long off the board. Tom Brady has a knack for making average receivers look like something special. That won’t be the case with Jacoby Brissett, who is going to need to have some real star power at WR. 26. TENNESSEE: Grant Browning, SS, UTSA With the top two tight ends off the board, the Titans will not reach for one in Round 1. Bednarik candidate Browning is head and shoulders the BPA and it’s almost criminal that he would drop this far. If he lives up to his potential, Tennessee would be able to get Reshad Jones’ salary off the books. 27. TAMPA BAY: Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson 28. PHILADELPHIA: Clifton Duck, CB, Appalachian St. 29. KANSAS CITY: Ross Pierschbacher, G, Alabama With Pierschbacher still on the board this time, KC goes with him instead of reaching for a QB, and improves its interior OL. 30. MINNESOTA: Trenton Irwin, WR, Stanford 31. PITTSBURGH: Kevin Stepherson, WR, Notre Dame 32. GREEN BAY: N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona St. |
