Week 3: Raiders vs. Titans Recap

Matthews TD.jpg
Newly acquired WR Rishard Matthews catches his 1st TD as a Tennessee Titan

The Raiders and the Titans both got off to slow starts in this game. The only score in the 1st Quarter was a 42 yard FG by Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski... And Janikowski had a big game.

However, 2nd Quarter would be the busiest in terms of points score. The Titans offense got going early as they scored a TD with 7:31 left in the quarter as Marcus Mariota found an open Rishard Matthews in the corner of the endzone. Matthews did a nice job of keeping his balance as he made the tough catch. Oakland would respond on their next drive with a 48 yard FG by Janikowski from the right hash. Then, the Titans came back two drives later with a TD as Marcus Mariota found a Delanie Walker on the quick, 6 yard TD strike. But, as time expired in the 1st half, Sebastian Janikowski made his 3rd FG of the half as this one was from 22 yards out. So, entering halftime, the score was 14-9, Tennessee.

The only score of the 3rd Quarter was an impressive one. Oakland was pinned deep in their own territory and it was 3rd and 12. David Carr looked over the middle for TE Mychal Rivera but Tennessee safety Da'Norris Searcy jumped the route, and returned it 20 yards for the TD. This marks the 2nd straight week the Titans scored a Defensive TD. And this is the 3rd straight week that either the Titans Defense or Special Teams Unit scored a TD. Fantasy owners of the Titans D/ST must be loving their pick right now!

Early in the 4th, the Titans struck again. And this time it was a long run by DeMarco Murray. Murray took the handoff out of the shot gun, cut to the outside, broke a tackle, and was off to the races on his 37 yard TD run. Oakland would respond on their ensuing drive with yet another FG, this time from 33 yards out. And the final score of the game would take place when Titans rookie HB Derrick Henry took the handoff out of the shotgun, followed his blockers, and ran 24 yards untouched for the score. Oddly enough, Henry's first TD run was also 24 yards, which happened in Week 1.

The Titans move to 3-0, while the Raiders fall to 1-2 on the season. Tennessee will play their first game against a Division opponent in Week 4 as they travel to Houston to take on the 0-3 Texans.

With the Titans moving to 3-0 on the season, this marks just the 3rd time in Tennessee Titan history (not including being the Houston/Tennessee Oilers) that they have started off the season with a 3-0 record. The other two years were 1999 and 2008.

Titans Trade Derrick Morgan, Sign Aaron Wallace

Madden NFL 17_20160824125952.jpg
Graphic showing what both the Titans and 49ers receive as apart of the Derrick Morgan trade

The Titans surprised us once with the Dorial Green-Beckham trade... And they've surprised us again as they've traded Derrick Morgan to the San Francisco 49ers for draft picks.

Morgan, 27, was traded along with one of the Titans' 2017 6th Round Picks and a 2018 4th Round Pick to the 49ers in return for their 2018 1st Round Pick and their 2017 4th Round Pick.

The Titans move seems surprising at first, but once you dive into the details surrounding the situation, the trade makes sense... Especially since the Titans receive a 1st Round Pick out of the deal.

First of all, Morgan has not played too well this season. He did have a nice 2 sack game in Week 2 vs. Detroit. However, he did not record a tackle last week, and he only made 1 tackle in Week 1. Morgan still has 3 years left on his current contract and he's supposed to make $22M over the remaining years.

And now that Morgan is now a 49er, that opens up the LOLB spot to Rookie Kevin Dodd who has been tearing it up in practice. And since the Titans will only have 52 players on their roster, Rookie OLB Aaron Wallace will be signed from their practice squad to round out the team.

It will be interesting to see how this move will affect the Titans' playoff hopes going forward.

Great win over Oakland! I love the Morgan trade, it frees up cap, gets a 1st round pick, and lets Dodd start. That's a win, win, win trade in my opinion.

Thanks! Those are my exact thoughts on the trade!

For the heck of it, I put Morgan on the trade block for a week only to see what I could get for him. I went into it with no intentions of actually trading him but then the 49ers were offering me a 2018 2nd Rounder and 1 other late round pick. So, I figured I'd be able to maneuver the trade to where I could get a 1st round pick out of the deal.

Thanks for the comment!

Week 4: Titans @ Texans Recap

Madden NFL 17_20160824131841 (2).jpg
Titans Rookie LB Kevin Dodd record his first career sack in his first career start

The Titans and the Texans played today in Houston in a thrilling game that came down to a huge 4th Quarter for both teams.

Houston got on the board first as newly acquired QB Brock Osweiler threw a dart to star WR DeAndre Hopkins who made a spectacular catch over Titans CB Jason McCourty. Besides this nice TD catch, Hopkins only managed to catch 1 other ball. Tennessee would follow up the Texans' TD with a 42 yard FG from the left hash to make it a 7-3 Houston lead.

The Texans scored the only points in the 2nd Quarter. Both of their scores were field goals. The first was a 38 yarder from the right hash early in the Quarter while the second was from 54 yard out and Novak kicked it perfectly and the ball sailed right down the middle of the goal post. So, going into halftime, the Texans held the 13-3 lead.

The only score of the 3rd Quarter was from Titans rookie HB Derrick Henry who as he plunged right through the heart of the Texans' D for the 1 yard TD run. After 3 Quarters, Houston held a 13-10 lead.

Now things got intersting... The Titans struck first in the 4th Quarter as Ryan Succop made a 31 yard FG to tie the game up. However, Houston responded with 2 straight TD drives. The first TD was a 19 yard pass to rookie WR Will Fuller V as he was wide open in the endzone. Then, the Texans forced a 3 and out and they capitalized as backup HB Alfred Blue scored from 21 yards out. Blue broke a would be tackle from Titans' FS Rashad Johnson, and then ran untouched the rest of the way for the TD. But, the Titans would come back and score a TD on a 5 yard TD pass from Marcus Mariota to rookie HB Derrick Henry for his 1st receiving TD. Henry slipped out of the backfield and was wide open for the TD.

The Titans then forced a 3 and out and got the ball with 0:47 left in the game. However, on 3rd and 3, Mariota took a shot down field but had his pass picked off by Johnathan Joseph. The Texans would then run the clock out and picked up their first win of 2016 as they defeat the Titans 27-20.

Tennessee falls to 3-1 on the season and will play against the Miami Dolphins (1-3) next Sunday on the road.

Titans' Wesley Woodyard wins AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award

Nashville -- Titans' veteran MLB Wesley Woodyard won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance vs. the Texans in Week 4.

Woodyard finished the game with 12 tackles, 3 TFL, 1.5 Sacks, and 1 INT in the 27-20 loss.

Woodyard is currently leading the Titans with 34 tackles on the season. He also has 5 TFL, 2.5 Sacks, and the 1 INT.

The 2.5 Sacks is a notable number for Woodyard the most sacks he's ever had in one year is 5. Through just 4 weeks in the young season, Woodyard is already half way there.

Week 5: Titans @ Dolphins Recap

Madden NFL 17_20160824184555.jpg
DeMarco Murray trucked Isa Abdul-Quddus on his 38 yard TD run

An epic collapse in the 4th Quarter for the Titans, gives Miami the 31-24 win.

The only score of the 1st Quarter was a 36 yard FG by Miami for the early lead. Tennessee would respond on their first possession of the as Marcus Mariota hit rookie WR Tajae Sharpe on a pass in the back of the endzone. Sharpe ran a go route and got past his man and Mariota threw a beautiful pass that hit him in stride for the 26 yard TD. Then, on the Titans next possession, DeMarco Murray pulled the play of the year for the Titans. Murray took the handoff, cut back to the left side of the field, then TRUCKED Dolphins' DB Isa Abdul-Quddus around the 30 yard line and took off from there for the 38 yard TD run. Miami would respond with 10 unanswered points. The first points were off a 37 yard FG from the right hash and then two minutes later, on their next possession, Ryan Tannehill found HB Arian Foster out of the back field for the TD pass. Foster just slid out of the backfield and cut up field and no one covered him, so Tannehill threw a bullet to him and he caught it in the endzone for the wide open 13 yard TD. However, Tennessee responded with a 39 yard FG from the left hash with just 43 seconds remaining in the half to give them a 17-13 lead going into halftime.

Derrick Henry scored the only TD of the 2nd half for the Titans as he plunged right through the heart of the Dolphins' D for the 1 yard TD run. It's the second straight week that he's scored on 1 yard TD runs. So, the Titans held the 24-13 lead going into the 4th Quarter... And then they totally blew it.

Miami opened the Quarter with a 34 yard FG to make it an 8 point game. Just over three minutes later, Arian Foster scored on a 2 yard run to make the score 24-22. So, Miami went for 2 and Ryan Tannehill found a wide open Jordan Cameron for the conversion. Miami had now tied the game up at 24-24. And Cameron wasn't done burning the Titans' D.

Just before the 2 minute warning, Ryan Tannehill found a WIDE OPEN Jordan Cameron streaking down the middle of the field. Tannehill threw a beautiful pass to Cameron and he ran untouched, 38 yards for the TD which gave Miami the 31-24 lead. And that's how the game would end.

So, thanks to an AWFUL 4th Quarter, Tennessee falls to 3-2 on the season while Miami is now 2-3.

Next Sunday, Tennessee plays the 0-5 Cleveland Browns at home. So, maybe they can snap this 2 game losing skid against, statistically, the worst team in the NFL.
