Establishing Depth Chart Entering 2016 NFL Preseason

This is going to be the depth chart entering Preseason Game #1 of 2016.

Quarterbacks:
#1. Ryan Tannehill (80 OVR)
#2. Matt Moore (70 OVR)
#3. Brandon Doughty (63 OVR)

Analysis: The chances of this changing whatsoever by the end of the preseason is 0. Even if Tannehill looks like Ryan Leaf and Doughty looks like prime Peyton Manning, Tannehill barring injury will be the starter no matter what. A more interesting aspect to look at here is will Brandon Doughty tdo enough to make the practice squad with Miami? He's from Davie and has been around the team and if he shows some stuff he could stick around even if he's not on the main 53. Matt Moore has disappointed a lot since being regressed to a backup role and has never quite impressed in preseason games or times when he came in when Tannehill got hurt, but his job is likely safe for at least this year. The only other QB on the roster is Zac Dysert(61 OVR) but he is merely a camp body.

Running Backs:
#1. Jay Ajayi (75 OVR)
#2. Arian Foster (79 OVR)
#3. Isaiah Pead (66 OVR)
#4. Damien Williams (72 OVR)

Analysis: With Lamar Miller bolting for Houston, this group gets a bit more complicated. Jay Ajayi was last years 5th round pick and now he's being entrusted with being the 1st team running back. Thankfully Arian Foster was signed to provide some level of veteran depth but with how injured he's been as of late and the fact he's in his 30s already... how useful can he truly be? Pead and Williams will be given their shots to prove themselves, while Daniel Thomas(72 OVR) and Kenyan Drake(70 OVR) will have very limited opportunities to show what they can do. Thomas has been with the Dolphins before and was in fact a former 2nd Round pick while Drake is a rookie from Alabama who hopefully has the speed to show some skills against backups and special team players.

Fullbacks:
#1. ??????????

Analysis: The Dolphins don't have a fullback. It's possible that changes with Gase here now.

Wide Receivers:
#1. Jarvis Landry (88 OVR)
#2. DeVante Parker (78 OVR)
#3. Kenny Stills (75 OVR)
#4. Jakeem Grant (66 OVR)
#5. Leonte Carroo (68 OVR)
#6. Matt Hazel (64 OVR)

Analysis: This is the group that has the most potential and will be asked the most of any other to grow. This core is so young and full of talent, it's time for them to step up and provide Tannehill the tools he needs for success. Landry has been a beast through his first two seasons and hopefully that production only continues. Parker had to deal with injury issues for a bit but now he's finally getting his shot now that he's healthy to show off what he's capable of. Stills was under-whelming considering the Dolphins gave up a 3rd Round pick for him last year but perhaps with a new system under Gase he can show off that speed and deep ball threat he had in New Orleans. Finally, Grant, Carroo, and Hazel will all be asked to have some production and get their name out there so teams know about it. Griff Whalen(71 OVR) is also apart of the team but his play-time will likely be cut the sheer number of young WRs.

Tight Ends:
#1. Jordan Cameron (84 OVR)
#2. Dion Sims (74 OVR)
#3. Thomas Duarte (64 OVR)

Analysis: One of the most disappointing groups last season. The Dolphins were hoping the drop-off from Charles Clay to Jordan Cameron wouldn't be much but instead Cameron failed to produce as his replacement and he's in a contract year now with all the pressure on him to re-kindle some of the success he had in Cleveland. Dion Sims was fantastic in training camp last year and showed a ton of strides but it didn't count when it mattered most and he was mostly a flop last season. Thomas Duarte will be battling it out with Marqueis Gray(68 OVR) and Jake Stoneburner(66 OVR) in order to keep his job as the 3rd TE. As a 7th Round pick it will be far from easy but he has the raw ability as a pass catcher to get the job done, his blocking will be what takes serious work.

Left Tackles:
#1. Branden Albert (81 OVR)
#2. Jermon Bushrod (83 OVR)

Left Guards:
#1. Laremy Tunsil (81 OVR)
#2. Dallas Thomas (68 OVR)

Centers:
#1. Mike Pouncey (83 OVR)
#2. Anthony Steen (64 OVR)

Right Guards:
#1. Billy Turner (72 OVR)
#2. Kraig Urbik (77 OVR)

Right Tackles:
#1. Ju'Wuan James (76 OVR)
#2. Sam Young (75 OVR)

Analysis: This whole group HAS to get it done this year. Ryan Tannehill can't have the excuse anymore that a crappy offensive line is the reason he hasn't been a winning quarterback. A lot of these individuals are good and it is finally time for them as a cohesive unit to do a great job together. There are a couple of names on the outside looking in such as Vinston Painter(66 OVR), Jacques McClendon(69 OVR), and Urlik John(71 OVR) but those heading into the 1st preseason games are the guys projected to make the roster. If some more of the younger guys can check things up than perfect. It doesn't matter who's starting as long as it's the most possible unit that can be put out there.

Left Ends:
#1. Cameron Wake (89 OVR)
#2. Andre Branch (72 OVR)
#3. Terrence Fede (68 OVR)

Analysis: A spot devastated because of injury last year... Cameron Wake is looking to do the impossible. He's a 34-year old coming off a torn achilles injury and he's looking to somehow comeback and be his same old dominant self. Can he do that? If there's any man who can, it's certainly Earthwake. As for the depth behind him, that's also going to be massively important. Why? While Wake will fight to become an elite pass rusher again, he is not an every down defensive end at this point in his career. He'll need rest and he'll nee backups who can defend against the run. Can Andre Branch do that? He sort of fizzled out of Jacksonville. What about Terrence Fede? A former 7th round pick... the 24-year old has made a few strides but now he'll attempt to see an elevated role in the defense.

Right Ends:
#1. Mario Williams (81 OVR)
#2. Jason Jones (78 OVR)
#3. Dion Jordan (68 OVR)

Analysis: Mario Williams was signed to replace Olivier Vernon who left to sign a monster contract with the New York Giants. How will he fare? Many in Buffalo accused him of quitting on the team and checking out, taking plays off, not loving football. The 31-year old is locked in for the next two years and will see if his career can see a spike of resurgence. Backing him up is former Lions RE Jason Jones who has some familiarity working with Ndamukong Suh in the case that he's ever forced to become the starer. The most fascinating parts of the team are behind these two guys, because Dion Jordan and Chris McCain(66 OVR) may just end up being the ones battling for a final roster spot. Jordan is a former 1st Round pick and even #3 Overall but everybody knows about the issues he's had with the NFL and staying on the field. Chris McCain is a UDFA who's made some noise as a pass rusher, but needs to earn his way up the depth chart. It's gonna be fascinating to watch them battle it out and see whether under-dog can triumph.

Defensive Tackles:
#1. Ndamukong Suh (96 OVR)
#2. Earl Mitchell (76 OVR)
#3. Jordan Phillips (69 OVR)
#4. DeAndre Coleman (69 OVR)

Analysis: We all know about the top dog, there's no need to talk about anymore than to just say he's a beast and he's gonna be around until he chooses not to be here. But what about what's behind him? Earl Mitchell was a former Texan and has been under-whelming even with Suh being a behemoth of a player. Jordan Phillips is a 2nd Rounder who hasn't really grown into replacing Mitchell's role as soon as the Dolphins would have liked... what does that mean for him? Fighting for that final DT spot is a mish-mash of guys from DeAndre Coleman, to Chris Jones(67 OVR), Charles Tuaau(60 OVR), and Jordan Williams(58 OVR), as of right now Coleman is the front runner but that can change with a few impact plays(such as sacks, tackles for loss, and forced fumbles) by any of these guys.

Left Outside Linebacker:
#1. Koa Misi (84 OVR)
#2. Spencer Paysinger (72 OVR)

Analysis: Limited depth here. Koa Misi is going to be entrusted with staying healthy. He's actually been one of the few most consistent pieces on this team despite the fact he doesn't really jump off the sheet when you look at his name. Hopefully he can stick around for a couple more years as a productive player. Backing him up is former Giant Spencer Paysinger who really is a Special Teams guy and would only really see the defensive side of the ball if there was an injury. This is easily one of the spots that Miami has to focus in on at the draft or else they may find themselves without a single linebacker who can clean up what the defensive line serves them on a plate.

Middle Linebacker:
#1. Kiko Alonso (77 OVR)
#2. Mike Hull (63 OVR)
#3. Zach Vigil (59 OVR)

Analysis: Kiko Alonso is being tasked to re-gain the form he saw with the Buffalo Bills before dealing with a ton of injuries. He was acquired in the deal alongside Byron Maxwell for a 1st Round pick swap and his play this season will determine if that was a good deal. Alonso is now 26-years old and the explosion he once had vanished in Philadelphia after he was traded for LeSean McCoy. The unfortunate thing is that even if Alonso disappoints, it's not like there's many players who can challenge him. Mike Hull and Zach Vigil are two undrafted free agents fighting to make the team. One of them surely will simply due to depth needs. But the reality is neither can be a starter in the NFL at this point in their careers. If they can make an impact on ST though... that's where you can stick around.

Right Outside Linebacker:
#1. Jelani Jenkins (77 OVR)
#2. Neville Hewitt (67 OVR)

Analysis: Jelani Jenkins is a really odd character. He was originally viewed as a disappointment until he was forced to play and was actually formidable in doing so. Last year it felt like he took a step back. He's now entering Year #4 of his NFL career and the Dolphins hope the 24-year old can just prove if he's a guy they wanted to keep around or someone who they can live with walking. Neville Hewitt is a 6'2" linebacker from Marshall and he was with the Dolphins last year but in the same vein with Vigil and Hull at the MLB spot, he's just a special teamer right now.

Cornerbacks:
#1. Byron Maxwell (76 OVR)
#2. Bobby McCain (68 OVR)
#3. Xavien Howard (72 OVR)
#4. Tony Lippett (62 OVR)
#5. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (64 OVR)

Analysis: By far the most terrifying group on this team. I have no faith in them, and I'm saying that in preseason. Byron Maxwell is the best CB group when he was at best the #3 guy with the Seattle Seahawks when he earned all his praise for being apart of the Legion of Boom. After that? Bobby McCain who's entering his sophomore year and didn't really get much playing time last season. Then you have a rookie 2nd rounder in Xavien Howard who got burned a lot while at Baylor. The Dolphins CB decisions as of late haven't been very fruitful from the likes of Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, going back to the Vontae Davis/Sean Smith group who didn't work amazingly well here but on their separate career paths with the Colts and Chiefs managed to find success. Guys such as Lippett, and Ekpre-Olomu will be asked to do a lot but hey... if you're a really underrated guy in the draft, why wouldn't you want the shot to prove yourself? If you show up and make some plays, you can be Reshad Jones 2.0!

Free Safety:
#1. Isa Abdul-Quddus (76 OVR)
#2. Michael Thomas (73 OVR)
#3. Walt Aikens (71 OVR)

Analysis: With Louis Delmas being cursed with injuries, the free safety spot ended up being a big concern for the Dolphins as Walt Aikens was asked to do a lot of work. Miami now hopes they've addressed the spot with Isa Abdul-Quddus formerly of the Detroit Lions. The best way to describe him is a Koa Misi version of a player for Detroit... solid little player, don't pay too much for him and you'll be happy with what gives you. Guys who can challenge him are of course Walt Aikens and then Michael Thomas. In case you don't remember, Michael Thomas is the guy who picked off Tom Brady to seal a victory back in Miami a couple of years ago in Week #15. Of course the Dolphins would go on to get pummeled in weeks #16 and #17 but that single moment was the peak of elation for Phins fans.

Strong Safety:
#1. Reshad Jones (92 OVR)
#2. Jordan Lucas (68 OVR)
#3. Shamiel Gray (66 OVR)

Analysis: The most secure spot on the team. Even Suh could potentially get dethroned if Jordan Phillips went on a tear and became Aaron Donald. On the other hand, I see no way that Reshad Jones isn't the starting SS this whole year unless he gets hurt. A hard-hitting play-making bruiser, the 28-year old is one of the highest paid safeties in the league and it is very well-earned. If there's anything you hope to take away from here, it's that maybe he can teach Gray and Lucas a thing or two on how to play the position. Despite his high salary, he's been disgruntled in the past about his paycheck and who knows... if he's extra insistent, he could be a shocking player to unusually soon.

Kicker:
#1. Andrew Franks (73 OVR)

Punter:
#1. Matt Darr (72 OVR)

Analysis: Usually you don't see teams just roll with 1 kicker and punter in the preseason but screw it. The Dolphins have a ton of faith in Darr who was a beast last season and Franks has been just fine for them. In the case that one of them starts massively sucking, a replacement can be brought here with ease and you can keep playing musical chairs with these positions until you find one that does the job(kinda like how they got the job in the first place)

Phew... that took forever. But that's the depth chart entering the Miami Dolphins 2016 Preseason!

Re: Miami's Back With a Vengeance, A Miami Dolphins Connected Franchise (Madden 17/PS

Twenty Dolphins Players to Watch in 2016 Preseason

Now that I've gone into detail regarding the 2016 opening Depth Chart, it's time to see what can change now that practice is going to be a factor along with preseason games. There's a flurry of things that can happen. Highly touted prospects can disappoint and find themselves dropping in the depth chart in favor of more proven veterans. An unproven player who was undrafted can just make the cut and give himself a year to show the Dolphins and the rest of the league what's he capable of. Injuries can pop up and give players you would never have dreamed of making an impact become starters over night. Because of all that, I'm going to be listing 20(mostly younger) players to watch for over the course of the preseason. 10 of them will be players on the inside looking out who are generally expected to make the team. The other 10 are players on the outside looking in. That doesn't mean they're expected to be cut, but the future will be deep down the depth chart, on the practice squad, or not making the team at all. They can change their fate with a bit of luck and a strong couple of weeks, let's get into the list!

On The Inside, Slightly Favored:
LG Laremy Tunsil (22, 81 OVR)
CB Xavien Howard (23, 72 OVR)
DT Jordan Phillips (23, 69 OVR)
WR Leonte Carroo (22, 68 OVR)
CB Bobby McCain (23, 68 OVR)
WR Jakeem Grant (23, 66 OVR)
FS Michael Thomas (27, 73 OVR)
LE Terrence Fede (24, 68 OVR)
CB Tony Lippett (24, 62 OVR)
RE Dion Jordan (26, 68 OVR)

Analysis of Group: So this is the group that is generally considered to consist of guys expected to make the team. There are a variety of reasons for this, but the biggest one has to be draft position. If you're a higher draft pick, there are simply better odds for you making the team. This is by far led by Laremy Tunsil whom by all accounts should make the team since he's a frigging 1st Round pick, the reason you want to keep an eye on him is because you want to see how he performs with the 1st unit. After that, you have a whole ton of question marks. Howard and Phillips are two 2nd Round picks who make many people feel queasy. Carroo, McCain, and Grant are all guys you hope to see blossom but you really have no idea what to expect from them. Carroo can hopefully be a 4th WR and solid guy to step up when others need rest, maybe McCain grows as the #2 CB, and perhaps Grant becomes a beast shorty return guy but those are just projections and hopes for guys without any of them actually proving.

Beyond that you have the oldest dude on any of these lists being Michael Thomas. He should be able to step up and become the back-up FS to Isa Abdul-Quddus but he's been hanging around for awhile and other than that one massive play vs Brady... you need more substance as a defensive player. Terrence Fede and Tony Lippett are two guys who fall into the same category at their position. They have some nice things about them, they've made the occasional nice play, but now you need consistent play out of them to make the team. Finally, you have Dion Jordan. I was seriously contemplating not even putting Dion Jordan on this list but considering he was a former #3 overall pick I felt I had too. Still, the distance between him and Chris McCain is essentially nothing. If he gets into any more off the field trouble or has any more suspensions, his *** will be cut before his BS could even be released.

On The Outside, Up-Hill Battle:
HB Damien Williams (24, 72 OVR)
RG Billy Turner (24, 72 OVR)
RE Chris McCain (24, 66 OVR)
WR Matt Hazel (24, 64 OVR)
TE Thomas Duarte (21, 64 OVR)
HB Kenyan Drake (22, 70 OVR)
CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (23, 64 OVR)
QB Brandon Doughty (24, 63 OVR)
MLB Zach Vigil (25, 59 OVR)
CB Jordan Lucas (23, 62 OVR)

Analysis of Group: This is the group that's going to have to impress to make the team, or at least impress enough to ease their mind about making the team. At the very top you have Damien Williams who's been a very capable running back for the past few years in Dolphins preseason games. He can easily break the Top 3 mix with Jay Ajayi and Arian Foster if he impresses once again. Later on you have Billy Turner who hasn't really impressed much but he is a backup RG, former 3rd rounder, and he just has to do better than a few veterans in order to get the job as a back-up guard. McCain as I mentioned is directly competing with Dion Jordan and making an impact as a pass rusher or causing chaos on special teams will be enough to almost assuredly guarantee himself a spot.

At this point you start to enter more murky waters surrounding these guys. Matt Hazel is a former 6th round pick and he's spent some time on the practice squad for Miami and has had little in the form of real gametime action. He will be fighting a serious up-hill battle against Landry, Parker, Stills, Carroo, and Grant... but can he be that 6th guy on the team? It's possible, but not likely. He'll need to get the right mix of getting open enough in practice while also building a bond with Matt Moore, Brandon Doughty, and even Zac Dysert in order to get enough targets to make an impact. That same logic applies to both Kenyan Drake and Thomas Duarte who once again will need the ball in their hands in the 2nd half of preseason games to show their talents. Ekpre-Olomu has had injury concerns and struggles with hip movement, Doughty is going against all odds of a 3rd QB making the roster, Vigil has to deal with Hull and other veterans who could be brought in, and finally Lucas is so raw he is basically built for the practice squad unless he does something remarkable like force a few turnovers or wreck utter havoc for the opposing offense.

That's my analysis regarding these 20 guys. It's already time! Let's dive into Game #1 of the 2016 NFL Preseason!

Game Recap: Woo.... not very often are preseason games that exciting.

Kicking off the 2016 NFL Preseason, neither side could have anticipated what they were going to have to handle. Right out of the gate both sides came out swinging, For the Giants? It took little time to score. Rashad Jennings busted open a 68 yard touchdown on just the 4th play of the game before many fans were in their seats. It was a draw play hand-off to him and Isa Abdul Quddus missed the tackle BADLY which could have made it merely a 7 yard gain or so. Instead, Jennings threw him down to the ground and kept on running down field before running into Reshad Jones. Despite the fact Reshad Jones is a beast and known for his hard hitting, he shrugged him off and dashed his way down the sidelines. Jelani Jenkins chased him down the field but there was no chance a linebacker would catch a guy like Jennings. Just like that the Giants jumped out to a 7-0 lead merely because of bad safety tackling, an issue that will surely be addressed this week in practice.

Thankfully for Miami's defense, the offense came out and responded quite well. After a 1-yard loss by Jay Ajayi, Adam Gase decided to flesh out his down the field offense. Ryan Tannehill had some pressure in his face but was able to see that Jarvis Landry had gained a step off against Dominique Rodgers Cromartie down the right side of the field. He heaved up a prayer and Landry answered it with a nice stretch for the ball while staying on his feet. Despite DRC's tremendous speed, Landry was able to get inside the 5 before both DRC and Cooper Taylor just barely managed to push him out of bounds at the 1-yard line preventing the touchdown. You could see Juice was pissed at himself for not finishing the job but a fantastic 78-yard play right out of the gate made many Phins fans quite excited, and the drive was finished off on the next play when Jayi Ajayi punched the ball in to tie up the game.

The next drive by the Giants was quite infuriating from the Dolphins perspective. Rashad Jennings kept running down their throats and there was simply nothing they could do about it. A 26-yard gain, an 11-yard gain, a 8-yard gain, a 7-yard gain, than a pass from Eli to ODB for 14 yards. It literally felt like nothing that Miami could do could stop them and this was with their 1st team defense out there fighting against a relatively poor Giants offensive line. The only reason it was stopped and the Giants did not score was because Kiko Alonso was able to jump in front of a short pass in the redzone and pick it off. A good play by the Dolphins linebacker to make an immediate impact play, but what happened for the previous 7 wasn't going to be washed away. The Dolphins held onto the ball for a bit but couldn't do much with it once the offense stalled at the Giants 40-ish yardline after a few incomplete passes.

The Giants offense took over again and the Dolphins did a better job of slowing them down. On 3rd and 3 at the Miami 43 yard mark, the defense came through and stuffed them to no gain. Fantastic right? We were gonna get the ball back and this was gonna be awesome!... instead, the Giants did what teams often do in preseason. They ran a fake punt. Will Johnson gained 27 yards on the rush to put the Giants in the Dolphins redzone which pretty much sucked because everyone on special teams was confused. It wasn't aided when Eli quickly threw the ball to a wide open Odell Beckham on the next play to put the Giants back in front at 14-7. Finally a good defensive stop... all for naught. That all did manage to change though on the very first play after the extra point. Jakeem Grant was the kick returner and caught the ball at around the Dolphins 3-yard mark or so. He saw he had blockers and eventually cut to the right a bit with Dion Sims and Jake Stoneburner leading the way. He got two monster blocks and was able to dash just past Eli Apple who was on the coverage team and could have made the stop if he had fully extended himself. Instead, Grant was in open space and once he broke free there was a 0% chance he would get got, that's how you make a MONSTER impact as a rookie.. touchdown Dolphins to make it 14-14 in a thrilling 1st quarter!

Now in the 2nd quarter, the 1st team units for both sides were well off the field. The Giants instantly noticed the change since they failed to do much with the ball. The Dolphins got it and Grant took the punt return up 14 yards after a few nice moves to continue wow'ing the crowd, even if it was against them! But just as the Giants offense struggled, so did Miami's. The one notable thing was Arian Foster got out there for a few rushes just to get some action but was soon taken out for Damien Williams. After a 3-and-out, the Dolphins punted the ball away and fantastic gunner coverage by Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Tyler Patmon prevented Dwayne Harris from going much of anywhere.... and it didn't matter cause of what happened on the next play. Once again a draw play, Nassib handed the ball off to Shane Vereen. He got it and made a nice cut outside to the left side of the field and Neville Hewitt was denied a tackle thanks to being engaged by Dwayne Harris. Vereen made his way more to the center of the infield and encountered Shamiel Gary who he evaded with a NASTY spin-off making Gary look like a fool and lose his footing. Vereen then put on the after burners and both Andre Branch and Michael Thomas failed to make the tackle at around the Giants 35-yard line. Eventually due to Vereen surely being gassed by that spin move he was caught by Thomas at the 1 yard line after stumbling. Surely upset he couldn't finish the job, it was made better when Nassib tossed the ball to Myles White for a 7 yard touchdown following a tackle in the backfield, Giants back on top 21-14.

Matt Moore and the rest of the Dolphins 2nd unit did a better job with the ball this time. Moore hit Grant for 15 yards and Griff Whalen for 16 yards on an important 3rd and 7 in Giants territory. After Damien Williams was stuffed and Moore threw an incomplete pass, it was 3rd and 10 at the Giants 29 yard line. Moore audibled and told Jakeem Grant to run a go route to the endzone and Moore would throw it up there for him. It was a decent play until you realize Grant is a midget at 5'6" while Trevin Wade is nearly 6'0" and easily made the interception on the ball.... sigh... all for nothing. That was until the Dolphins defense forced a stuff on 3rd and 2 at around midfield and forced the Giants to punt! Taking over at the Dolphins 18 after a few plays, Moore decided to try something audacious. On 3rd and 3, he saw Trevin Wade was playing press coverage on Matt Hazel. Moore figured since he had a few dump off options, Hazel would challenge him and go deep. At around the 40 yard mark with them running together down field, Hazel pulled away. Moore with plenty of time in the pocket saw him and heaved the ball right before a defender could hit him. Safety help in the form of Nat Berhe came late and Wade knew it. Hazel caught the ball and raced down the field as Wade fell at a feeble attempt to tackle him.... touchdown Miami as Hazel celebrated in the endzone! Wade was visibly pissed at himself considering he made a great play for the INT earlier and now got burned badly to tie up the game again at 21-21. Such is the life of a young player trying to make it in the NFL sometimes.

Soon halftime came around. The only thing to really note is Tony Lippett picked off a bad pass from Ryan Nassib as the Giants were around midfield and trying to punch in a field goal before halftime, so good play by Lippett! The 3rd quarter was mostly marked by the fact of how dominant Damien Williams was. He just... assumed Rashad Jennings-esque levels of greatness? Just consistent great gains of 5+ yards. He and Isaiah Pead carried the Dolphins all the way down field until Williams got stuffed for 1 yard on 1st and goal at the Giants 8 yard line. Gase decided to switch it up and call a pass play. Brandon Doughty who was in the game now threw it to Thomas Duarte who picked up 6 yards but tried to dive for the endzone and came up actually fumbling the football. Thankfully Duarte recovered it and all but you have to know the difference between good aggressiveness and stupid aggressiveness, that was more the later. Thanks to Duarte getting them to the 1-yard line, Isaiah Pead punched the ball in to give the Dolphins their 1st lead of the game at 28-21.

The rest of the 3rd quarter didn't see much action. Each side exchanged possession a few times but no real highlight plays to mention other than a big 3rd and 13 conversion by Doughty with 50 seconds to go in the 3rd on a pass to Damien Williams for 23 yards. It didn't matter much as the Dolphins were so deep in their own zone and they had to punt but it was still nice to see Damien Williams be multi-dimensional. The Giants offense took over again at the 14:14 mark in the 4th quarter. After an incomplete pass, a 2nd and 10 play would make this game fascinating once again. The Giants had 4 receivers spread out and were looking to air it out in this final quarter. Tavarres King was the slot receiver and his was an out route to take it up field. It shouldn't be too much of a problem but Spencer Paysinger was supposed to cover him and as a linebacker did not recognize the play. King caught it and was able to pull away from Paysinger and Shamiel Gary(the safety who was supposed to help Paysinger) as King put on the after-burners to take it 75 yards into the endzone.... tied game, 28-28.

It felt like every time something action packed happened for one side, it would also happen for the other. After a 24-yard kick return by Kenyan Drake, on the very 1st play to respond Damien Williams took it 60 yards and was tackled just before being able to hustle 80+ yards for the TD. It did though the Dolphins in the Giants redzone... before the defense stalled. -2 yard pass to Matt Hazel on a WR screen, a 1-yard gain to Duarte, and eventually a throw away by Doughty thanks to everyone being covered. Andrew Franks would kick the 34 yard field goal to put the Dolphins back in front at 31-28 but it was far from a comfortable lead. The Giants would chew plenty of clock on their next possession, and it felt like it went on forever thanks to the fact the Giants got a big play whenever they need it. 2nd and 10? 20 yard yard pass to Geremy Davis. 3rd and 13? 33 yard pass to Myles White. Finally they were stuffed on 3rd and 14 after a false start and had to settle for a field goal by Josh Brown for 27 yards... 31-31 all tied up with 6:53 remaining in the game! While both sides wanted to win, both wanted to avoid OT as well!

This was when things... got interesting. On the very 1st play, Damien Williams looked like he had just had his career moment. He busted up an 80+ yard TD to put the Dolphins back up emphatically, albeit giving the Giants more time to work with... UNTIL, an idiotic thing happened. Leonte Carroo was one of the receivers on the play and for whatever reason, despite the fact that Williams was already well past him and looking like he was going to easily score, Carro FOR SOME REASON shoved a linebacker in the back to get a block in the back flag which turned the play from a touchdown to the ball at the Giants 43 yard line. STUPID. STUPID. STUPID. If that happened in the regular season... ugh, so annoying. Still, the Dolphins offense didn't let that kill their drive. Great runs by Williams for big gains and a CLUTCH 3rd and 5 conversion inside the Giants redzone got it past the 2 minute warning before the Giants started using timeouts. At the Giants 7 yard line, Williams got the ball and chugged past Nat Berhe to get his touchdown back and put Miami in front! Of course... the extra point attempt was blocked and there was still the scenario that the Dolphins could lose this game since the Giants had 2 timeouts with 1:11 left in the game.

It wasn't looking too scary... on 4th and 2, the Giants ran the ball with Shane Vereen and converted it but were forced to kill precious seconds off the clock. They were only at their own 37 yard line with 39 seconds left and 0 timeouts. That was until some bull**** happened. A fake draw-play, Nassib held the ball and had TONS of time with the Giants receivers running down field. When it looked lie Andre Branch and Earl Mitchell would finally get to him, he heaved it. On the play were free safety Michael Thomas and cornerback Tony Lippett who already had a great interception earlier in the game. Of course, somehow, Dwayne Harris brought the ball in over both of them and got it inside the 10 yard line in Dolphins territory. The Giants offense quickly hustled and then spiked the ball with 11 seconds left. 2nd and goal, Nassib tried to throw it to Will Tye but he threw it too far in front and over his head with 6 seconds left. The Giants would likely have 1 play at best if it wasn't like a slant throw or anything. On 3rd and goal, Nassib got the ball in the shotgun with a 5-wide set. He was looking and looking and had so much time since the Dolphins only sent 3 rushing but he could not find a single player open. Finally Andre Branch barred down on him and he threw it in desperation style to Tavarres King but it was batted down by Tyler Patmon! INCOMPLETE! NO TIME LEFT! The Dolphins somehow managed to hold on and defeat the New York Giants in Game #1 of the 2016 NFL Preseason, 37-31! Talk about one hell of a way to start a season... great opening win for Adam Gase!

Big time game for Damien Williams. He really wants a roster spot.

Recapping Dolphins/Giants 2016 Preseason Game #1

Alright so the 1st game of the 2016 NFL Season is in the books for the Miami Dolphins! Talk about one hell of a game, you don't usually see those sorts of shootouts in games nowadays, let alone ones that happen in the preseason. Regardless, it is now time to see the fallout and gains that happened from that performance. The play-by-play reviewer which allows me to write the recaps for the game is pretty solid, but it's not perfect. I get to see a general timeline of what happens right after a game, but you can't replay every single thing to see what happens. Because of that, I have a thing where I create little notes throughout the game just in case I forget to mention them in the game recaps. It's good because it focuses on tacklers who make big stops on short gains, little things that tend to go unnoticed for the guys who don't have the ball in their hands, and just in general is solid to have to look back on. Here are the ones I made regarding this past game between the Dolphins and Giants.
Quote:
Dolphins vs Giants ~ 2016 NFL Preseason Game #1
- mike hull special teams tackle
- nice chase by isa abdul quddus
- big kiko alonso redzone int
- great play by mike hull stopping 3rd and short
- special teams fooled by fake punt run
- jakeem grant kickoff return td
- brilliant gunner work by olomu and patmon
- piss poor run defense, both 1st and 2nd unit
- matt moore picked off on 3rd and 10
- vigil brilliant stop on 3rd and 2
- FANTASTIC job by Lippett on the INT
- thomas duarte fumble diving for endzone, recovers it
- patmon misses play as gunner
- big time stuff on 3rd and 1, phillips & thomas
- AWFUL coverage by paysinger and gary for big td
- damien williams has a simply amazing game
- xavien howard gets burned badly on 3rd and 13
- IDIOTIC block in the back by leonte carroo on touchdown
- MONSTER gain on 3rd and 5 in redzone to seal victory
- dion sims missed key block that allows XP to be blocked
Perfect! Now I can see who did what that wasn't instantly mentioned. The biggest one I have to say is regarding the defense. I completely forgot to mention how well Mike Hull did on some stops. The only time I mentioned Isa Abdul Quddus was on that blown tackle when he got beasted on by Rashad Jennings, and now it can be seen he actually did make a nice play later on in the game. There was great work by Olomu/Patmon as gunners so that helps their case to be on the team. I would go on later to mention how Xavien Howard got burned badly on 3rd and 13 and that really should be mentioned even though I didn't highlight on it in the recap. When Myles White picked up 33 yards, it was because of the fact Howard got burned and didn't back pedal quick enough out of the gate. That happened in the 4th quarter of the 1st preseason game, that simply isn't acceptable and will be noted.

Alright so now that everything that I took away from that game has been noted... what's changed?

Stock Rising After Game #1:
+++ HB Damien Williams
+++ WR Jakeem Grant
++ WR Matt Hazel
++ LB Mike Hull
++ CB Tony Lippett

I would say these are the 5 biggest guys who really made some waves in Game #1. Damien Williams may have single-handedly in that game given himself a spot on the 53 man roster. That doesn't mean he's going to be jumping Jay Ajayi or Arian Foster just yet, but he looked utterly sensational and could have had even more yards if some flags didn't go against him. Jakeem Grant also had a sensational day and that mostly has to do with the return game. Getting a kick-off return now that the touchback gets you to the 25 and kickoffs are looking like they'll be more and more obsolete? Great game by him. Matt Hazel needed the ball to make an impact and he did a great job with it, even more than just the 80+ yard touchdown when he burned Trevin Wade. He may very easily find himself rising up the depth chart. Finally you have Mike Hull and Tony Lippett who were just two defenders that had strong nights. Lippett forced a turnover while Hull as I noted made some nice tackles, and made more plays than his counterpart in Zach Vigil to get mentioned in this section of the recap.

Stock Falling After Game #1:
--- SS Shamiel Gary
-- WR Leonte Carroo
-- CB Xavien Howard
-- Entire Run Defense
- LG Dallas Thomas

Woof... Shamiel Gary just had himself an atrocious night. He didn't tackle well, he didn't cover well, and for a 26-year old who went undrafted and the organization doesn't really have an obligation to keep you around, that could mean lights out for him. The rest of the guys on this list have something to be wary of. Leonte Carroo failed to make an impact all night in the passing game and probably would have flown under the radar... until he had that penalty on that monster run by Damien Williams, and now you see his stock falling. Xavien Howard takes a hit because he got hurt real hard on that 33-yard pass to Myles White, and with Tony Lippett getting some noise you could see some changes in the depth chart. Finally, I had to call out the run defense and that goes for everybody on defense who played tonight. From Suh, to Wake, to the 3rd units who were out there when Vereen/Jennings tore it up... just unacceptable play tonight. That has to get better in practice. Finally, Dallas Thomas since he allowed that sack despite the fact the offensive line gave all 3 QBs time tonight to do some damage.

So there it is... my recap of the game vs the Giants, now it's time to see the personnel changes.

Re: Miami's Back With a Vengeance, A Miami Dolphins Connected Franchise (Madden 17/PS

Dolphins make 4 cuts(Dysert, Gary) sign SS Antrel Rolle

Despite the fact it isn't even Week #2 of the preseason, I guess it's time to make cuts? Here are 4 of them.

Miami Dolphins Cuts:
QB Zac Dysert (26, 61 OVR)
SS Shamiel Gary (26, 66 OVR)
MLB James Burgess (22, 57 OVR)
DT Jordan Williams (23, 58 OVR)

It was believed that the Dolphins only needed to cut 3 players and it was confusing as to why they had cut a 4th. In terms of who was cut, all of the transactions make sense. Dysert simply knew he was destined to be screwed when he failed to even get into the 1st preseason game. It seems like the Dolphins have liked what they've seen out of Brandon Doughty in practice and they wanted to give the 24-year old as much time as possible to make a name for himself. While him making the roster is quite doubtful, he could make the practice squad if the Dolphins like what they see. The biggest surprising cut easily came from Shamiel Gary. He had a very poor outing vs the Giants but even then, seeing him get cut after just the 1st week was quite surprising. You don't usually tend to see that right away, and it surprised many beat reporters who noted it. Finally, James Burgess and Jordan Williams were cut after they failed to even get into the game. They're young so maybe they can bounce back elsewhere, but their respective positions were to deep with competition in order to make any sort of impact.

The reason as to why the Dolphins decided to release a 4th man was soon made known. As many had speculated, it was because the Dolphins were reaching a signing. They had agreed to a 1-year/2.66M contract with Antrel Rolle that is entirely non-guaranteed. Sun Sentinel reporter Omar Kelly expressed approvement of the signing. Rolle is from Florida and the early part of his life here before eventually joining the dominant early 2000s Miami Hurricanes when he was a young man. He was drafted #8 overall with the Arizona Cardinals and spent the first few years of his career there. Then he left to sign with the New York Giants on a 5-year/37M contract where he went on to win a Superbowl in 2012 and play out his contract fully. Sadly, decline and injuries played a roll when he signed a 3-year deal with the Chicago Bears... he only played 7 games after playing all 16 games every single of the 5 years he was with the Giants. Due to this the Bears decided to release him and make him a free agent.

Many doubted that Rolle would get a shot in the NFL again. He's 34-years old and at this point in his career even at safety many wonder if he still has the build to get the job done. He can't be a starter at this point, yet he still wanted to keep playing. Considering he lives in Florida, he was relieved to hear that the Dolphins were interested in signing him. After a few brief workouts and a physical the two sides reached an agreement. Rolle will wear the #37 since #26 is being worn by Damien Williams. Don't get this deal mistaken, though. There is no guarantee that Rolle will make the roster merely based on name and the Dolphins made it clear to him that they expect him to play in the 2nd half of preseason games. They intend to find out if he can keep playing at the NFL level and if he can a role backing up Reshad Jones would give a veteran presence to a secondary that is severely lacking leadership.

Now let's go ahead and take a look at what we have in store for the Dallas Cowboys in Week #2.

Re: Miami's Back With a Vengeance, A Miami Dolphins Connected Franchise (Madden 17/PS

2016 Player Spotlight: WR DeVante Parker (23, 78 OVR)

One of the articles I'm gonna do for this franchise is zooming in on player spotlights. This gives a bit of a headline to a guy who hasn't been mentioned or someone I want to start getting involved more in the team. Someone who's named wasn't mentioned much in Game #1 of the preseason vs the New York Giants was 2015 1st Round pick, DeVante Parker. The main targets in the 1st quarter(when Parker actually played) was Jarvis Landry and the rushing attack. This meant that both Parker and Kenny Stills weren't able to get much action, and it wasn't aided by the fact Jakeem Grant basically took away a possession thanks to a kickoff return for a touchdown(not that I'm complaining, of course) So why is Parker the spotlight player? Well... because the expectations are here, and as the #2 wide receiver next to Jarvis Landry he better live up to them.

Here's a bit of background surrounding Parker. He was selected with the #14 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. His peers that he was competing with as the top wide receiver included Amari Cooper(#4), Kevin White(#7), Nelson Agholor(#20), Breshad Perriman(#26), and Phillip Dorsett(#29). He wasn't helped by the fact he only played 6 games his final year at Louisville because he was dealing with a foot injury. That foot injury continued to hamper Parker in his rookie year with the Dolphins since he only got to start in 4 games despite playing in 14 of them. Overall he finished with just 26 receptions on 51 targets but had 494 yards and 3 TDs. An average of 19 yards per reception considering the way Tannehill is perceived as a dink-and-dunk quarterback is something that's note worthy. Parker particularly came on towards the end of the year and had his highlight play of the season vs Baltimore.

Spoiler

But now how have expectations changed for Year #2? Parker is being asked to step up and become the #2 receiver alongside Jarvis Landry, with Kenny Stills being the 3rd main weapon in the offense. The 23-year old will have his work cut out for him dealing with some of the superior corners in the AFC East. With Adam Gase running the show on the offense, the goals and expectations for DeVante naturally increased. The optimists who have faith in the offense expect 1,000+ yards, 8 TDs, and north of 75 receptions. Is that feasible? Possibly... but it would also have to take into account Ryan Tannehill also making the leap from a progression perspective. Usually, Tannehill has had one real favorite target throughout each season of his career. It was Brian Hartline his rookie season, it switched to Mike Wallace(somewhat against his will?), then it was a mixture of Juice and all and now Tannehill will be asked to fairly distribute amongst those 3 while also feeding a guy like Jordan Cameron his fair share of passes while also balancing the offense from a rushing attack perspective... it's a lot to handle, which is why the process won't be instantaneous.
Thankfully, numbers aren't everything. If Parker has a 800 yard season with 5 TDs and shows progress from last year, the majority will be happy with the loud minorities voicing the occasional complaint. Ultimately, winning is what everybody is after and if that means Parker mostly remains a 20+ yard pass option or redzone focus, than so be it. The likes of Leonte Carroo, Jakeem Grant, and even Matt Hazel could get the opportunity to show their abilities and could soon infiltrate their way up the depth chart if guys aren't producing.
