Re: Do they even play Football in Alaska? A NCAA12 Story

Just trying to catch up to where I am actually in the game, so posting the next 3 games below in the post. Sorry for the short write ups, but the games were brutal. Not much to see here....

Nanooks can't make it 2 wins at home, falling to ECU

Coming into Fairbanks without a win on the season, ECU won the Quarterback duel after both threw for over 300 yards. On a day when pounding the ball on the ground would have been the best stratergy given the high winds, neither team could establish that running game. Johnson was the more consistent performr whilst Irby tried to force the ball at times, which showed with 3 interceptions on the day, including one in the end-zone. McDaniels couldn't repeat his 100 yard game feat and once again struggled to run effectively behind a line which was getting beaten all day by the ECU D-line.

After 45 points in the first half, the second only produced 9, all to ECU which secured them the win. The wind played a significant factor, gusting up to 20 mph and with Nanooks chasing the game, Irby's erratic throwing always played into ECU's hands. Nanook couldn't generate any pressure on Johnson with 0 sacks on the day, but did keep the run game in check limiting them to only 66 rushing yards.

Coach Grosvenor will feel like they could have taken more from this game. With the score close in the 4th quarter, a couple of different throws or a long run could have won the game. Alaska Fairbanks and ECU both go to 1-2 for the season.

Louisville dominate Alaska Fairbanks from start to finish, showing gap in talent.

If we can say one thing about about UAF QB Irby, is that he is consistent. Unfortunately, thats consitent for throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Another 2 TD, 3 INT game where UAF didn't get on the board until Louisville pulled starters at the end of the 3rd quarter. Another telling factor was the huge number of penalties UAF had, players trying to make plays but being totally outmatched and giving away penalties.

With very little run game again, Coach Grosvenor must be worried about how one-dimensional they have become, which only heaps the pressure onto the already struggling QB Irby. With few positives to be taken from this game and no recruits signed up for the new season, it could be a long hard slog for UAF, as they show no signs of improving or getting that second win.

Troy add more misery onto Alaska Fairbanks

Alaska Fairbanks took the long trip to Troy hoping to turn their recent form around, only to be met with more misery and another crushing defeat. Only 4 days after their last game, UAF looked tired and might be wondering why two games were scheduled so close. Unfortunately, in football excuses count for very little and after a bright start, went scoreless for 3 quarters.

Irby had another day to forget with 3 more interceptions, but with very little time on the pocket was scrambling for his life most of the game. He ended up the leading risher for UAF. Another game in the books, another bad loss for Alaska Fairbanks, with surely a must win game at Akron Zips next up.

Game Notes
A must win game for both teams, both dwelling at the bottom of the standings.

Coach Grosvenor had this to say, "This will be a true test of our running game, if we cannot get something going against one of the worse ranked teams in the league, we may have to re-evaluate our game plan. I have stressed to our guys that this is a must win and we have to leave it all out on the field."

Re: Do they even play Football in Alaska? A NCAA12 Story

Nanooks down Zips in a basement battle, winning first road game.

Akron, Ohio In what ESPN described as a must win battle for both teams, Alaska Fairbanks came away from the long road trip to Akron victorious. With Coach Grosvenor keen to establish a running game early on, McDaniel was called forward to carry the load. However, it was QB Irby finding regular target Mathis, showing extreme athleticism for the first score of the day on a 11 yard diving pass play.

Not to be outdone after Huff had pinned Akron deep in their own end-zone, the Defense swamped Zips QB Moore, stuffing him before he could make a play, bring up a safety and a 9-0 lead in the 1st quarter. McDaniel had slowly started to build on them 2-3 yard runs, turning them into 4-5 yar gains and got his reward early in the second when he broke a tackle and ran in from 5 yards to increase the lead to 16.

Akron finally scored with the long completion for 80 yards on a busted coverage leaving Sconiers free to walk into the end-zone. Mathis once again came up big when it counted, taking his second TD catch from Irby and restoring a healthy lead to take into the break, up 23-6. Akron would come out firing in te 3rd quarter, trying to close the gap but the Nanooks D would hold firm, limiting the scores to 2 field goals from Marchese.

As the Zips D wore down, McDaniel and Tate began to find holes to run through that wasn't there at the start of the game, resulting in Irby throwing the least attempts he had all season and a positive touchdown to turnover ratio. With the game already won, Akron drove the field one last time as time expired too close the game to 14 points. Alaska looked good value for their win and were rarely in danger of a comeback. Alaska just had too much on the day for Akron, and showed that they can run the ball, although only on one of the leagues worst rush defenses.

Re: Do they even play Football in Alaska? A NCAA12 Story

Recruitment Update - Top 10 Board

Mullins is ranked in the top 1000 players and with out running game issues, would be a huge get. I've also worked hard on Centre Daniels as you just have to pick O-line up when they show an interest, it took a lot of time to catch up with Idaho, just hope it was worth it. A couple of the Athletes came on board later on and have risen up the board. One of the coaching requirements is 5 or more 2 star recruits each year, so that's where the focus has been. I have another 10 1 star recruits on the bubble. I would be happy landing 4 of this list, but if we could grab HB, QB and C that would be a good start to the rebuild. Side note - of the 5 recruits in Alaska, only CB O'Neil showed any interest in us and I don't think we land him.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nanooks suspend 4 players for #11 Utah game

FAIRBANKS - Coach Grosvenor has suspended 4 starting players for the upcoming game against Utah due to violations of team rules. "Look, I'm not here to go into details on what happened, they were emotional and excited after the win against Akron and a few things got out of hand. However, I run a tight ship here and we need to be disciplined."

Sources say the 4 players, JR WR Paris Farris, JR RG Adam Cook, JR LB Daivd Waters and SR Safety Larry Merritt were seen in a local bar where they a fight broke out. It's not sure if they were involved or just by-standers, but coach getting a call at 2am would have not done them any favors.

It will be seen if any further punishments are handed out once CCTV footage comes out, or if this has damaged any relationships between the town and the football team.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#11 Utah stroll away from Nanooks in strong second half

In another one of these classic Nanook game of two halves, they kept the score close, only down by 3 at the half but came out flat and were dominated both sides of the ball in the second half. Hello Alaska, Utah are not Akron!

With Utah dominating the line, McDaniel had another tough day at the office, only picking up 50 yard from 20 carries. Irby threw for 260 yards and for the most part was consistent, but relied on the big play too often which led to many incomplete passes. What did emerge was the wide out threat from true freshman Shannon Armstrong, who hauled in 7 catches for 107 yards. "He came up big for us, in a hostile road environment. We moved him across the field, even starting at TE to create mismatches and it worked," said Grosvenor.

For Utah Wynn looked all the part of a great QB. Throwing for 337 yards and 3 scores, he tormented the Nanooks defense all day, I think they could have had 12 men on the field and he still would have thrown for over 300. Defensive end Fakahafau didn't give Irby any space on the day, sacking him twice and causing him to throw the ball away on more than a few occasions.

When all said and done, this was the result that everyone expected. You would have had to be brave to have predicted an Alaska win. Alaska head into a bye week and will look to get on the recruitment trail as they still do not have a single commited player for next season, a big worry for everyone involed.

Game Notes
With 4 recruits on campus, Alaska Fairbanks will want to make a good impression and beat the Thundering Herd. #33 Centre in the country D.Daniels is the biggest name coming for official visit.

Thundering Herd falter in sub zero conditions in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS - When the temperature drops, the fans get more crazy. On the coldest game-day of the year, Nanooks fans went bare-chested in the stands to show the world, well, that you probably have to be a little crazy to survive up here. The Thundering Herd came close to victory, but Alaska scored on a final 80 yard, 10 play drive to get the win.

With starting QB Baker back, he got the nod over Irby to lead the Nanooks and he did not disappoint, throwing for almost 400 yards with 3 TD's, but 2 interceptions. On the first play of the game, Baker showed Nanooks his poise and arm strength as Mathis broke down the sideline and Baker put the ball where only his receiver could catch it and won the foot race to score.

Marshall came back in the 2nd quarter, outscoring Nanooks 17-7 to take a 20-17 lead into the half. Marshall will be kicking themselves that they couldn't turn a few of the field-goal's into touchdowns's as they got into the red-zone 6 times, but only came away with 2 touchdowns and 2 field-goals, where Alaska went 4 times and got 3 touchdown's and 1 field-goal. This, ultimately was the deciding factor for the game.

The forth quarter was one no-one would want to miss. Marshall and Alaska were trading blow for blow like boxers in the ring. Marshall thought they had scored first on a 37 yard fumble recovery, this was called back after a revied. Alaska came right back and scored from the same drive, a huge swing in momentum and points. Marshall, down by 8 at this point looked to have landed a huge blow when RB Van broke for a 57 yard score before then punching the 2-point conversion in also too tie the game with less than 2 minutes to play. Could Baker lead his team the length of the field and get points, any points to win the game?

Then, something unthinkable happens to add controversy to the finish for the Nanooks. With 15 seconds left, 3rd down and 25 yards out, Coach Grosvenor pulled Baker who had driven all the way from his own 20 yard line, and put Irby into the game, after not throwing a pass previously. It somehow paid off for Alaska as Irby rolled out the pocket, found Freshman WR Armstrong open for 23 yards to put them on the 2 yard line. With timeouts to spare, Tate then carried the ball up the middle for a 2 yard score with seconds left on the clock. Baker was seen to be upset on the sideline after being pulled, smashing his helmet into the floor. As of now, no word from either Baker or Coach Grosvenor about the incident has come out but we expect something over the next few days. But for now, Alaska win's their 3rd game of the year, and that cold, cold football field, seems to be giving them a home field advantage.

Re: Do they even play Football in Alaska? A NCAA12 Story

you gotta count two wins as a successful season so far, congrats on both! Looks like the team really came through.

I enjoyed finally seeing a picture of your team in action, maybe you could pepper in a few more of those? I'd like to see the home uniform
