PATS SIGN PETTY OFF JETS' PRACTICE SQUAD

By Riley Byrnes, NESN Staff Writer
September 20th, 2016

Foregoing the veteran route, the Patriots earlier this morning announced the signing of second-year pro Bryce Petty to the active roster from the Jets' practice squad. The former Baylor standout was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, and was relegated to the practice squad to begin the season after the Jets took Penn State's Christian Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 draft.

Initially, the organization approached Mark Sanchez about an opportunity according to a tweet by ESPN's Adam Schefter, but reportedly didn't want to sit behind Tom Brady upon his return. Bill Belichick named rookie Jacoby Brissett as his starter after yesterday's workout, and the Petty signing won't change that.

Julian Edelman led the Patriots with 138 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

By Riley Byrnes, NESN Staff Writer
September 23rd, 2016

FOXBOROUGH -- With seventeen points from five New England turnovers; and 340 yards and three touchdowns from Brock Osweiler, Houston cruised to a relatively easy 42-21 win in Foxborough. With three interceptions and a lost fumble, Jacoby Brissett had a rather forgettable initial NFL start. Just two plays into New England's first drive, he was sacked by Whitney Mercilus; who forced the ball loose, and was picked up by the Texans after a brief scrum near their own five-yard line. To the defense's credit, they managed to hold Houston to a short field goal, but it set the tone for the game.

Brock Osweiler would later stake the Texans to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter, finding Braxton Miller for a 13-yard touchdown. Notably, he has a touchdown catch in each of his first three NFL games, and has been the team's leading receiver in that same timeframe.

New England would finally dent the scoreboard on the following drive, as Brissett led the Patriots on a ten-play drive that culminated in a six-yard score by LeGarrette Blount to pull them to within a field goal. Later however, the Patriots would cough the ball back up, this time on a fumble by Rob Gronkowski with Houston hanging on to a 10-7 lead. Gronk was asked about his injured wrist in the lockerroom after the game, but said that it was fine and had nothing to do with the fumble or the couple of key drops he had.

Two plays after the fumble, Alfred Blue, who was filling in for injured starter Lamar Miller, broke a pair of tackles in the backfield and rumbled fifty-nine yards for the touchdown to give Houston their largest lead. Last week, Blue had just twenty-one yards on eleven carries against Kansas City in their 35-17 loss to the Chiefs. At the time, the defense had bottled him up with just thirty-four yards on twelve carries before busting loose.

"It's what happens when you keep your feet moving," said Blue afterwards. "They only had one or two guys flowing to the ball most of the game, so there were some tacklers I was able to take head on. Our offensive line did a great job."

Blue finished with 141 yards on twenty-three carries, and the defensive struggles for New England leaked over into Week 3. Even the Patriots' solid pass defense wasn't immune to breaking down, as DeAndre Hopkins scored on a pair of deep balls from Osweiler, notching 179 yards on just four catches with a pair of scores. The first came on the heels of a touchdown pass from Brissett to Julian Edelman midway through the third quarter, his first foray into the end zone in 2016.

However, just a few moments later following the kickoff; Hopkins deked cornerback Logan Ryan on a double move, and Osweiler placed a perfect pass and Hopkins out-ran the defense down the sideline the rest of the way for a seventy-six yard score.

Before the play, New England had fought back to within three points again, and appeared able to trade blows with the Texans' improved offense. But much like the blocked punt in Week 1, the quick score seemed to deflate the team, and the "here we go again" mentality showed up in the team's play for the remainder of the game, as they were outscored 18-7 in the final quarter.

Belichick was asked about the drastic momentum shifts in games so far this year, and he explained that with a younger roster, those shifts can be more pronounced.

"Even professionals from time to time can let the moment get to them too much," he said. "In Jacoby's case, he just has to put the negative plays behind and just learn that turnovers are going to happen, and you're more defined by what you do in the face of that adversity, rather than how successful you are."

Buffalo checks into Foxborough next Sunday in what is turning out to be a huge game already in the young season, as the Bills could potentially be 3-0 coming into that game and with all kinds of positive momentum depending on how they fare this week against Arizona. They have a rapidly-improving quarterback in Tyrod Taylor, a good offensive line, and excellent skill position talent with LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins.

"They'll be a stiff test for us," Belichick droned when pressed about how he'll defend Buffalo. "Frankly, I haven't watched any film on them yet, but we'll start in earnest tomorrow once the staffers and video guys get it ready....the extra time to prepare may work to our benefit here. Or let's hope it does."

THREE THINGS WE LEARNED:

This early-season bad defense is now officially a trend. And unfortunately, outside of making another trade, I don't really see a fix in sight. The first two games, I could understand with Arizona and Miami's big, powerful lines and solid players in the backfield. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has got to be beside himself. We said at the start of the season that depth in the front seven is the biggest issue on the team, and I don't see any reason that's going to change. I'm seeing different looks, stunts, and twists; and they're bringing pressure from everywhere. Now, the offense going full potato and turning the ball over five times doesn't help matters, so they share a chunk of the culpability here. But it seems to me that this is a talent and depth issue, not a scheme issue. They're getting pressure on the quarterback, but they're blitzing an inordinate amount of times to do it, leaving defensive backs and remaining linebackers on islands far too often. Guys were open all day underneath over the middle, and then Osweiler burned them deep twice in the second half. Getting Rob Ninkovich back in a few weeks will help, but it may be time to start giving guys like Trey Flowers and Elandon Roberts some looks in the meantime, especially on obvious passing downs.

Jacoby Brissett has some real tools. But he looked like a rookie for much of the game. He's willing to push the ball downfield, which is nice, but he tried to put too much air under the ball on his first two interceptions, and his third interception was a "WTF" throw, to put it mildly. His second touchdown pass to Danny Amendola in the fourth quarter was an absolute dart, as he fit it in between the two defending safeties, and Amendola did the rest. For a bigger guy, he also moves well and looks to be able to get a few yards with his feet when needed.

Gronkowski's wrist is likely still an issue. He won't admit it, but the wrist appears to still be bothering him as he had trouble gripping the ball in traffic with both hands. They'll need him healthy and productive again next week, as Buffalo has almost turned into a must-win in Week 4, especially if they win this Sunday.

IT WAS OVER WHEN...

Alfred Blue scored on a seven-yard run to put Houston up 31-14 early in the fourth, just five plays after Brissett's second interception of the game. New England never seriously threatened the rest of the game.

MONDAY PRACTICE REPORT

By Riley Byrnes, NESN Staff Writer
September 26th, 2016

With the 42-21 home loss to Houston well in the rear-view mirror, the team has turned their attention to this upcoming weekend against Buffalo, who edged Arizona 45-42 in the most exciting game of the weekend. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, and receiver Sammy Watkins is as close to unguardable as there is in the league. They're also tied for third in third-down efficiency (31-of-53), lead the league in average time-of-possession, and when they get into the red zone, they're likely going to convert as they have scored twelve touchdowns in fourteen trips inside the opposition's twenty-yard line.

"There's no doubt that Buffalo will be a tremendous challenge for us, and it's a game that we really need to show well and win," said Bill Belichick after the Monday afternoon workout. "It's still early, but we're at the point where improvement needs to start happening."

It seems to be trendy around the league to dismiss Buffalo as a bad defensive team in the same breath as praising their offense, but the numbers tell a different story. Don't let the gaudy 33.3 points per game allowed fool you. Yes, that's a lot of points, but they've had two turnovers result directly in points (one interception and fumble return, respectively) and they're the tenth-ranked defense in the league in terms of yards, including fifth against the run. Their main achilles heel has been special teams, where they're allowing nearly thirty-four yards per kickoff return, and Patrick Peterson scored on a 101-yard kick return yesterday afternoon.

The kicking game has been a struggle to date. Kicker Dan Carpenter, who normally has a very big leg, has just seven touchbacks in twenty-one kickoffs, one of the worst rates in the league as well. The Bills also rank in the bottom one-third in net punting at 37.7 yards.

"They're certainly doing things a different way over there now," said Bill Belichick when meeting with the media following this afternoon's practice. "But they're still 3-0, which is what matters in the end. You can win a lot of different ways in this league. Rex is a good coach, he's just winning with offense as opposed to defense. And they're still not giving up lots of yards, at least statistically. It's certainly something that he's not accustomed to, and that the league isn't used to seeing, but he shouldn't apologize for how he's winning."

The Bills check in for a 1 P.M. Eastern kick at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Some other notes from today's post-practice presser with Belichick:

--He gave the team Friday off after the loss, and said they came back Saturday and had a good workout. He's hopeful that the extra time to prepare for Buffalo will pay off.

--Upon being asked about Tom Brady and the first official day he can return to the complex, he noted that Brady is eligible to return the Monday following this weekend's game. According to him, he has not had any contact with Brady since the suspension began, but has heard from people with the quarterback that he's doing well and "doing what he can" to stay sharp and ready to hit the ground running upon his return. He also made sure to re-iterate the same for suspended defensive end Rob Ninkovich, saying that depth will be improved when the ten-year vet returns.

--New acquisition Bryce Petty is picking up the offense pretty well, and has been "ardent" in film study to date. Belichick said he feels good about playing him if Brissett is unable to go for any reason.

--Receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) is another game-time decision this week, but all indications are that he'll try to play unlike last week. He was held out of last week's game; and isn't expected to start against Buffalo, but should play a dozen snaps or so. Rookie Malcolm Mitchell has been an able fill-in so far, ranking second on the team in yards with 147 through three games with ten catches. Hogan was injured in Week 1 on his only catch of the game, a nine-yard grab.

--Rob Gronkowski had nine catches for 130 yards, but felt that he left another fifty yards on the field in Sunday's game. Belichick noted that his wrist is 100% healed according to team doctors, and doesn't expect it to be an issue going forward. The receiving corps appears to be inching back towards health with Gronkowski at full speed, and the encouraging news on Hogan.
