Re: Chiefs Kingdom | Kansas City Chiefs Franchise (M17)
Preseason Week 4 - Chiefs end preseason strong, beat Packers 35-21
Tyler Bray started the game, battling for the #3rd QB spot
Top 3 Stars of the Game
1. MLB Josh Mauga: Mauga, who starts alongside Pro-Bowler Derrick Johnson, played the first half of the game and was all over the field. 12 total tackles, as well as a fumble that he forced and recovered.
2. QB Kevin Hogan: Fans thought it might be over for Kevin Hogan in the NFL, or at least for the Chiefs, after his first drive. He fumbled and the team bailed him out by recovering. The next play he threw a pick. Whatever Andy Reid said to Hogan on the sideline changed everything though. Hogan finished 8/10 (80% completion rate), 144 yards, and 2 TDs.
3. CB KeiVarae Russell: Russell was a large part of why the Chiefs kept the Packers scoreless in the first half. Late in the first quarter with Green Bay in the red zone, KeiVarae picked off Aaron Rodgers.
Final Chance to Shine
The last preseason game was a wild one for the Chiefs. Most starters were left off the field, leaving some room for the backups to show their stuff. The defensive backups, specifically on the line, look solid. Rookies Chris Jones (LE), Eric Murray (SS), D.J. White (CB), and KeiVarae Russell (CB) all played phenomenally.
The #2 wideout battle between Chris Conley and Rod Streater went on all game but it's clear both men will make the roster at the very least. They impressed heavily. Conley had 6 catches, 84 yards, and a TD. Streater also had 6 catches, but for 126 yards and 2 TDs. It'll be interesting to see what the opening day depth chart looks like for sure.
As for the backup QB battle, all that was left was #3 on the depth chart. Before the game, head coach Andy Reid said, "Nick (Foles)'s our backup. He's played very well all preseason." Foles didn't play in the final preseason game. Tyler Bray got the start and went 11/15 (73%), 140 yards, 2 TDS, and an interception. Aaron Murray, who many saw as the potential winner of the battle, went 4/7 (57%), 35 yards, and an interception. As noted in the "Top 3 Stars" section, Kevin Hogan started sloppy but came back incredibly strong.
Do the Chiefs carry 4 QBs or let one of their top preseason performers go? What do they do about the logjam of young talent in the defensive backfield? Stay tuned for the next post where all cuts will be posted, as well as what the Chiefs will do with their practice squad.
