This was a great Army team with Steelman, Brown, Hassin, and Maples before Hassin just kind of faded away in favor of Larry Dixon. Erzinger was a monster at LB when he took over for Steven Anderson. As much as I like to make fun of the West Point ring knockers, I still have to follow and say Go Army!
I couldn't resist, I have a real soft spot for the camo uniforms. Was a shame Hassin didn't quite stay the course, could have been a monster, lets hope he does better for me. Erzinger was indeed a machine at LB. Is fun to throw it back to these players

Thank You, Yes they are indeed. AF and Navy just too good to use to start a dynasty in the game. I'm usually a fan of passing teams so will be fun to try and pound the ball some.

Army win triple overtime thriller in empty Idaho stadium
There are games that stay with you for your whole life, that is the magnitude of this game. It wasn't two top teams fighting it out for a chance to play in the title game, this was just hungry young men fighting it out until the very end, blow for blow, inch for inch, neither wanting to end on the losing end.
The only down-side to this game was that only 9,115 got to see it live.
In the end it was Army who held their nerve to take the spoils from a long trip west to Moscow, Idaho. To those watching the game on repeat, the first 3 quarters were ordinary. The first big play of the day came from QB Trent Steelman, so often leading the charge on the option run, faked the hand off and had RB Malcom Brown streaking down the middle of the field, he split the safeties and no-one had the speed to catch him on a 55 yard score. Idaho answered with their own passing attack after using the run effectively to drive the field.
The score going into the 4th was 24-27 to Idaho, which was extended to 34-24 and putting new Army coach Lincoln in a position often hard for an option team to come back from, especially with Captain and QB Trent Steelman sidelined for the game after injury in the 3rd. RB Brian Cobbs ran the next score after him and FB Jared Hassin kept moving the chains on the drive. Army caused a 3 and out before back-up QB Max Jenkins fumbled the ball, which Idaho's Kenneth Pattern picked up and returned for 6. Return man Josh Jackson made up for the mistake to quiet the Vandals fans instantly as he took the kickoff 89 yards back to the house.
Down by 3, MLB Steven Erzinger lead his defense for a last stand and got the ball back with just over a minute on the clock. Putting the fumble behind him, QB Max Jenkins fired several completions down the field before time would run out, leaving senior kicker Alex Charlton to tie the game with a season-long attempt of 41 yards. The dome must have helped, not fighting any wind as the ball sailed through the uprights with distance to spare. Ladies and gentlemen, this was going to overtime.
Idaho struck first, giving Army no chance to stop them. FB Jared Hassin was the hero of the drive, converting on a 4th and short, smashing his way through would be tacklers and then finished the drive off on the next play from 1 yard out. Army's ball and QB Max Jenkins had everyone in tight, audibles from run to pass which sent RB Malcolm Brown on a corner route, hit him in stride and once again silenced the Idaho fans. But once again, like two savvy boxers in the ring, Idaho struck right back with their own pass.
So to 3rd overtime, something would have to give soon surely. Stats and points racking up like when playing playstation games. CB Josh Jackson would provide that spark, batting down a pass on 3rd and 15, forcing Idaho to kick the field goal and pray they could stop Army getting into the end zone. This time it wasn't the arm of QB Max Jenkins, but his legs. On a play action role out saw an opemn lane to the end zone, took off and thundered in for the score. Army win a thriller in triple overtime, you may just struggle to watch a better game all season.

Army leave it late to kick field goal to win as time expired
The kicker is often the most over-looked player on the team, unless you have a bad one. For the second week in a row, K Alex Carlton had a vital part in the game, last week to send it to overtime, this time to win the game, lining up from 30 yards to break Toledo hearts as the time expired. "I'm just doing my job, I just want to coach to know that when the game is on the line I won't let him and the guys down. I stay behind at practice for these situations." said Alex Carlton after the game.
Toledo had come out strong in the 2nd quarter, putting 20 points behind a strong passing attack from QB A Dantin who went 10 from 14, 152 yards, throwing 3 scores in the process. Army had no answer to that, but how vital might that missed kick have been? could that have been the difference in this game, for Toledo, they will never know.
Army tied the game back up after some hard running, grinding out yards before FB Jared Hassin got a block on the edge, once he see's daylight there is not many in the league that can catch him. Sifting up another gear he ran the ball in from 50 yards. QB Trent Steelman was having to throw the ball more often than expected with some bad field position and good stops by Toledo. Going 9 from 17 for 196 yards was impressive for the run first team, however the 3 interceptions will be something that needs looking at. "They are all on me, we got into 3rd and long and I tried to make something happen. They closed my running lanes off and I just forced the ball where it wasn't open." said Steelman.
What he didn't do with his arm, he made up for in the 4th when he converted a long drive into points, scoring from 7 yards out to take the lead midway through the 4th. Toledo, not content to sit back launched another air raid attack and found the endzone with 55 seconds left on the clock, this looked like another game going into overtime for Army.
"I had done it the week before, I knew I had it in me again to make something happen. I didn't quite make it all the way, but putting Trent on their side of the field gave us a good chance for points," said CB Joch Jackson after talking the kick return back 45 yards. Army gained 8 yards after an in completion, a short pass and a run up the middle. Going for it on 4th down, QB Trent Steelman found his WR Anthony Stephens on play action to move the chains. With 2 time outs remaining, the next play was a run to the middle to make it easier for the kicker before stopping time with 1 second to go. Army go to 2-0 (1-0 MAC) on the season.
