Army set to face Ball State in 2018 Military Bowl
6-6 Ball State will face 7-5 Army West Point on December 27, 2018 in the Northrop Grumman Military Bowl.
Ball State has had a very streaky season - they were blown out by Wisconsin 73-21 on opening day, before nearly upsetting Vanderbilt in a 28-24 loss one week later. They ripped off four straight wins over Idaho, Buffalo, Kent State and Miami of Ohio, before falling to 10-3 Akron by 3, and 8-5 WMU by 7. They got bowl eligible with wins over Toledo and Northern Illinois at 6-4 before dropping their final two games to Eastern & Central Michigan.
Ball State is led by senior QB Riley Neal who has thrown for 2,699 yards this season along with 18 TDs to just 7 INTs this year. Neal is a minor rushing threat with a little over 200 yards and 3 TDs on the ground. Ball State also has a 1,000-yard rusher in James Gilbert who has 1,222 and 14 TDs on the year.
Ball State averages 28.9 PPG this season, and is ranked 37th in total offense. However, their defense has held them back, being ranked 100th in the NCAA, and ranked 108th against the run this year, and Army is ranked 1st in rush offense.
Ball State does take good care of the football, being +8 in turnover differential (12th), which is actually behind Army who is +11.
Can their defense finally slow down a run game? We'll see in the bowl game.
