2017 SEASON - WEEK 1
BILLS RUN WILD
Karlos Williams made a big splash in his Bills return, scoring three touchdowns
9/10/17
East Rutherford, NJ (AP) - The Buffalo Bills opened up the 2017 season just as they finished off 2016, with a victory over the New York Jets at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. Karlos Williams Sr was the story for the Bills, returning after being cut last pre-season. He ran for 55 yards and two touchdowns, and caught 2 passes including one for another touchdown in the 33-21 victory.
Tyrod Taylor flips this screen pass to Karlos Williams for a Bills touchdown. The Bills grabbed a 3-0 first quarter lead on a Dan Carpenter 29 yard field goal.
The Jets offense was smothered by the Bills in the first half, but early in the second quarter, Davon House picked off Tyrod Taylor and returned it 30 yards for a score to give New York a 7-3. The pass was intended for Sammy Watkins, but was thrown to his inside and behind him, allowing House to jump the route.
The teams would exchange missed field goals before the Bills put together a drive in the final two minutes, culminating in a one yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Williams on a screen. The teams went to the break with the Bills up 10-7 and holding the Jets to just 87 yards of offense.
Karlos Williams would make it 17-7 midway through the third quarter as he broke a run off of the right side, and scampered 23 yard to pay dirt. A Carpenter 39 yard field goal would put the Bills comfortably up 20-7 entering the final quarter.
But the Bills defense backed off into a prevent mode and Case Keenum began to heat up. He drove the Jets quickly down the field to score early in the fourth as Keenum hit Quincy Enunwa on a 24 yard pass down the seam to cut the Bills lead to six.
The Bills (1-0) would answer on a drive dominated by LeSean McCoy. He capped it off with a two yard run off of left tackle. The two point conversion failed and the Bills led 26-14 with 9:02 left.
The Jets would make it interesting late as Keenum hooked up with Enunwa again. This time from 9 yards out to cut the Bills lead to 26-21 at the two-minute warning. Enunwa caught five passes for 55 yards and had both of the Jets offensive touchdowns in the loss.
The Bills would recover the onside kick, and drove it down with Karlos Williams running it in on the final play of the game to score his third touchdown. He ran for 55 yards on the day in his return to the Bills. LeSean McCoy ran for 114 yards as Buffalo piled up 202 yards on the ground. Their fifth consecutive two hundred yard rushing game dating back to last December.
Sammy Watkins had a quiet day, catching just four passes for 33 yards.
The Bills will return home for their home opener at their brand new downtown stadium, Wegman's Field, as they host the Kansas City Chiefs (0-1).
