2017 SEASON - WEEK 5

BILLS PLUNDER BUCS

Sammy Watkins turns a slant into a 96 yard catch and run, but was tackled at the one.

10/8/17
Tampa, FL (AP) - The Buffalo Bills took their show to Florida on a steamy Sunday afternoon and came away with a hard fought 17-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to improve to (4-1) on the young season. Sammy Watkins continues to impress. On Sunday afternoon, he caught five balls for 215 yards, including receptions of 54 and 96 yards, in the Bills win.

Tyrod Taylor throws the game winning score to Glen Gronkowski
The Bills defense stuffed the leagues second best rushing attack, holding them to a season low 32 yards. The league's second leading rusher, Doug Martin, was held to a season low 32 yards on 16 carries. Tampa managed just 247 yards of offense as they fell to (1-4).

The Buccaneers did grab the lead late in the first quarter on a 21 yard Roberto Aguayo field goal. It capped off a 12-play, 47 yard drive.

The Bills took the ensuing kickoff and drove deep into Tampa territory, but Tyrod Taylor was picked off by Bradley McDougald at the Bucs 14 yard line. After forcing a three and out, the Bills would get on the board. Karlos Williams Sr punched it in from one yard out, to end a seven-play, 51 yard drive and put the Bills in front 7-3. It was Williams sixth touchdown on the season, after re-signing with the club this offseason.

Senquez Golson would intercept Jameis Winston on the Bucs next drive at the Buffalo 39 yard line. The Bills would turn that into three points as they drove 59 yards in five plays. The key play was a 54 yard bomb to Sammy Watkins. The Bills would take a 10-3 lead into the break.

Buffalo opened the second half with the football, but on the very first offensive play, a play-action pass, Taylor was strip-sacked. Gerald McCoy forced the ball out and William Gholston picked it up and rumbled 22 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 10-10.

The Bills would turn it over again in the third quarter. This time it was LeSean McCoy who had the ball knocked out. Arthur Brown jumped on it on the Tampa 39 to thwart the Bills. The Bills defense would force a three and out and punter Bryan Anger downed the ball inside the one yard line. That set up the Bills for the big play of the day. On second and seven from the three, Taylor hit Watkins on a quick slant. He broke two tackles and took it 96 yards down to the Tampa one before getting shoved out of bounds. Two plays later, Taylor play-actioned and hit Glen Gronkowski wide open in the flat for the go ahead score.

The Bucs would have a glorious opportunity to at least get back to within four as they drove 14 plays down to the Buffalo 15 yard line early in the final quarter. But Marcell Dareus stuffed Doug Martin on fourth and one, effectively ending the Buccaneers chances.

The defense sacked Winston three times and blitzed often to keep Winston hurried all afternoon. They run blitzed a ton too and it was effective in shutting down a very effective Tampa ground attack.

Up next for the Bills will be a trip to South Florida to face the Miami Dolphins next Sunday in a big AFC East match up. The Bills blew a 14 point lead there last season, losing 27-24 in overtime.

Notes: The Bills lost linebacker and leading tackler Preston Brown to a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter. Preliminary reports are a possible shoulder tear, meaning he may miss up to a month of action.

LeSean McCoy was held to just 38 yards on 16 carries, his lowest output on the season.

Leaders:
Passing: Tyrod Taylor (BUF) 15-22 291 yds, TD, INT; Jameis Winston (TB) 27-41 239 yds, INT
Rushing: Karlos Williams (BUF) 16 car, 86 yds, TD; Doug Martin (TB) 16 car 32 yds
Receiving: Sammy Watkins (BUF) 5 rec 215 yds; Auston Seferian-Jenkins (TB) 6 rec 68 yds

2017 SEASON - WEEK 6

BILLS WIN AGAIN

Adolphus Washington celebrates a safety to seal the Bills fifth win on the season.

10/15/17
Miami Gardens, FL (AP) - The Buffalo Bills took care of business on Sunday afternoon, and now have a clear path in the AFC East after a 25-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The win improved the Bills to (5-1) and they now have a three game lead in the AFC East after just six weeks.

Former Bill Kiko Alonso had two interceptions to key a Dolphin comeback that fell just short.
The Bills jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead and it looked like they were in cruise control. They outgained the Dolphins 176-70 in the opening half and the Dolphins offense did not look threatening at all.

Shady McCoy put the Bills up 7-0 in the second quarter on a shifty six yard touchdown run to cap off an eight-play, 53 yard drive. Dan Carpenter would hit a career long 58 yard field goal on the Bills next drive. Charles Clay would cap the first half scoring with a beautiful 35 yard touchdown down the seam to make it 17-0. The last score came after Ryan Tannehill coughed the ball up scrambling in the final minute of the first half.

The good feeling didn't last long for the Bills though. After a three and out to open the second half, punter Tomas Amaro had his punt blocked by Isaiah Frey with the Dolphins recovering on the Bills one yard line. The next play, rookie Sheldon Evans scored and the Dolphins were on the board.

Ndamukong Suh then hit Taylor as he was throwing, causing the ball to tumble end over end in the air and Kiko Alonso picked him off for the second time on the afternoon at midfield. Six plays later, Evans scored on a sweep around the left side from 10 yards out to cut the Bills lead to 17-14 and there were visions of last season's blown lead in this same stadium. The Bills lead 14-0 in the opening quarter here last year, before losing 27-24 in overtime. The drive was kept alive by a big defensive holding call on Ronald Darby after LeVeon Chavous had sacked Tannehill on a third down play to knock the Dolphins out of field goal range.

Early in the fourth, the Dolphins would tie the ballgame on a 22 yard field goal from rookie Jack Nails. It capped a 12-play, 60 yard drive.

The Bills would retake the lead for good after a short punt by the Dolphins setup Dan Carpenter to knock a 26 yard field goal through with 7:29 left in regulation. He would add a 35 yarder with 4:18 left to put the Bills up 23-17.

Miami would have one final chance, as they took over at their own five with 1:40 left. But on the first play, Tannehill was pressured and his pass was deflected and caught in his own endzone by Evans. Adolphus Washington was there to tackle him for a safety to put the Bills up 25-17. Washington had a big day for the Bills, recording seven tackles, two for loss, and two sacks.

The win moves the Bills to (5-1) with a stranglehold on the AFC East. The Dolphins sit in second at (2-4), with the Patriots (1-4) and Jets at (1-5). Up next for the Bills is a return to Wegman's Field next Sunday for a match up with the Atlanta Falcons (3-3).

Notes: Miami outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins left the game in the fourth with a shoulder injury. It was learned to be a broken collarbone and he will likely miss 2-3 months.

Leaders:
Passing: Ryan Tannehill (MIA) 20-24 134 yds, INT; Tyrod Taylor (BUF) 16-27 169 yds, TD, 2 INT
Rushing: LeSean McCoy (BUF) 18 car, 65 yds, TD; Sheldon Evans (MIA) 18 car, 39 yds, 2 TD
Receiving: Charles Clay (BUF) 5 rec, 75 yds, TD; Solomon Hutchins (MIA) 5 rec 44 yds
