2017 SEASON - WEEK 7

FALCONS GROUNDED

Marquis Goodwin runs through a gigantic hole as he takes it to the house.

10/22/17
Buffalo, NY (AP) - The Buffalo Bills leaned on their defense and special teams to erase an early two touchdown deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 38-24 at Wegman's Field on Sunday afternoon. The win was the Bills fourth straight and moved them to (6-1) and atop the AFC after seven weeks.

Stephon Gilmore picks off this errand Matt Ryan pass and returns it 79 yards for a score.
On Sunday afternoon the Bills defense scored twice and Marquis Goodwin return a kickoff for another touchdown as the league's top rated offense was held to a season low 270 yards.

Atlanta (3-4) came out on fire, scoring touchdown on their opening two possession and going through the Bills defense like a hot knife through butter. The opening offensive play for the Falcons was a 51 yard catch and run by tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz. The quick, three-play drive ended with a Matt Ryan to Julio Jones six yard touchdown pass. After a Bills three and out, Cameron Brate capped the Falcons second drive with a one-yard touchdown reception to put the Falcons up 14-0 just six minutes into the game.

The Bills finally settled down and put together a 15-play drive that lasted just over nine minutes. It ended on a one-yard pass from Tyrod Taylor to backup tight end Nick O'Leary on the first play of the second quarter. Dan Carpenter then connected on a 24 yard field goal on the Bills next drive to pull the Bills back to within 14-10.

Late in the half, the Falcons were driving when NIckell Robey-Coleman hit Matt Ryan on a corner blitz, forcing a fumble. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus picked up the ball and rumbled 61 yards for a score to put the Bills in front 17-14.

The Falcons dominated the opening half in possession and yardage (228-120), yet trailed.

The teams would exchange punts in the third quarter as neither offense could get untracked. Matt Ryan then made a huge mistake. On third and eight from the Bills 30, he threw an ill advised deep out that was picked off by Stephon Gilmore. He returned it 79 yards for a score to put the Bills up 24-14 with just eight second left in the third quarter.

That ten point lead lasted for eight seconds, as Tevin Coleman took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 94 yards straight up the middle to get the Falcons back into it on the final play of the third quarter.

Marquis Goodwin then answered that with a return of his own. This one an 89 yarder to the house on the first play of the fourth quarter to restore the Bills ten point lead. Following an Atlanta three and out, and a short punt from Matt Bosher, LeSean McCoy broke off a 50 yard run on Buffalo's next offensive play to put the Bills up by 17. The Bills scored three touchdowns in 2:02 to blow this one wide open.

McCoy would add a 46 yard run on the games final play to end the day with 127 yards, although 96 of those yards came on just two plays. He ran it 21 times for 31 yards on the rest of his carries as the Falcons had him bottled up for most of the day.

Matt Ryan threw for 391 yards and Atlanta tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz had a day, catching 11 balls for 175 yards. Julio Jones caught four balls for 52 yards and a score. The Falcons piled up 413 yards against the top ranked defense in the NFL, but it wasn't enough to overcome the two deadly turnovers and the kick return score.

Sammy Watkins, the yardage leader in the NFL, was held to just four catches for 49 yards.

Buffalo (6-1) will next head to Cleveland (1-5) next Sunday before their bye. Atlanta (3-4) heads to Minnesota to take on the Vikings next Sunday.

Notes: The Bills once again got through this week injury free.

2017 SEASON - WEEK 8

SACKED!

Tyrod Taylor is sacked by rookie cornerback Dillon Gardener and fumbles late in the third quarter.

10/29/17
Cleveland, OH (AP) - The Buffalo Bills ran into a bump in the road on Sunday afternoon down the shores of Lake Erie as they were stunned 23-10 by the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Browns sacked Tyrod Taylor nine times and forced five Buffalo turnovers as they picked up just their second win on the 2016 season.

Tyrod Taylor scores on a 22-yard scramble in the second quarter.
The Browns (2-5) took the opening kickoff and drove 35 yards to setup a Blair Walsh 53 yard field goal to grab an early lead. They would add another Walsh field goal on their second possession to take a 6-0 lead.

The Bills would put together an 8-play drive that ended in a short Dan Carpenter field goal thanks to a big Emmanuel Ogbah sack of Tyrod Taylor on third and goal from the Browns two yard line. The score was setup by a long LeSean McCoy 54 yard run.

The Browns answered the Bills field goal with an eight-play touchdown drive. Duke Johnson Jr. scored from three yards out on third down and the Bills were officially on upset alert, down 13-3.

The ensuing Bills drive saw Taylor throw his first interception of the game. He tried to hit Marquis Goodwin down the seam, but rookie corner Dillon Gardener got underneath Goodwin and picked it off at the Browns ten yard line. Following a three and out from Cleveland, the Bills took over at the Browns 38 after a poor punt. They would score four plays later as Taylor scrambled right on a third down play and raced 22 yards to the end zone to cut the Browns lead to 13-10.

The second half was a disaster for the Bills offense. It began on the opening second half drive as Taylor was picked off by linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah at the Cleveland seven yard line to thwart another Bills drive. The Bills next drive ended with Taylor getting sacked by Stephen Paea on third down at the Browns 13 yard line. He fumbled and the Browns recovered. Taylor was then strip sacked by Dillon Gardener on a corner blitz and lost the ball at the Bills eight yard line on the Bills next possession. Three third quarter possessions and three Taylor turnovers.

The Browns would cash in on this one as former Bill Ryan Fitzpatrick hit tight end Gary Barnidge with an eight yard touchdown pass to put Cleveland up 20-10.

Taylor would drive the Bills down deep into Cleveland territory, but then made another mistake. He tried to setup a screen to Karlos Williams, but instead got the ball tipped into the air by Barkevious Mingo. He caught the tip and returned it 60 yards to the Buffalo 12. Four plays later, Blair Walsh knocked his third field goal through and the Browns went up 23-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Bills would drive deep into Browns territory twice in the closing minutes, turning it over on downs both times.

The Browns defense was the story in this one. They gave up 381 yards, but sacked Taylor nine times and forced five Bills turnovers, all of them inside the Cleveland 25 yard line. Emmanuel Ogbah had five tackles, 2 1/2 sacks and an interception. Barkevious Mingo had five tackles, two sacks and an interception. Rookie first round pick Dillon Gardener, drafted 22nd overall, had three tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.

For the Bills, they dropped just their second game on the season to drop to (6-2), but this one will leave a bitter taste in their mouth heading into their bye. They return to action on November 12, at home against the New York Jets (1-5-1).

Notes: Sammy Watkins caught four passes for 101 yards in the loss.

Leaders:
Passing: Tyrod Taylor (BUF) 17-31 272 yds, 3 INT; Ryan Fitzpatrick (CLE) 12-18 155 yds, TD, INT
Rushing: LeSean McCoy (BUF) 18 car 91 yds; Duke Johnson (CLE) 33 car, 7 2yds, TD
Receiving: Charles Clay (BUF): 6 rec, 87 yds; Gary Barnidge (CLE) 5 rec, 82 yds, TD
