Re: My Old Kentucky Home| A WKU Football Dynasty
WESTERN KENTUCKY'S HISTORY
WKU'S CURRENT HISTORICAL RECORDS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND FACTS
Football History
The Western Kentucky football team were a FCS team and a member of what was known as GFC, or the Gateway Football Conference, until 2006. In 2002, the Hilltoppers won the NCAA Division I FCS National Football Championship. The Hilltoppers moved from the FCS to the FBS four years later and remained independent until 2009 when they became a member of the Sun Belt conference. The Hilltoppers would move conferences again, joining Conference-USA in 2013.

Fan Traditions
- The red towel is famous at WKU. The origins of the towel come from Hilltopper basketball head coach Edgar Diddle after getting upset that the team's towels were being stolen. He decided that all of the teams towels were to be red. After the red towels were made, Diddle threw them to the rafters, beat them on the floor, chewed on them, waved, twisted, and even cried into them.
Rivalries
WKU has several historic rivalries that stem from its time in the Ohio Valley Conference. Since WKU's move to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2008, two of it's three original rivalry games are no longer played on an annual basis.
- 100 Miles of Hate is the name of the long-standing rivalry with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. The two programs played together for several decades in the Ohio Valley Conference, and they both moved around the same time to the Sun Belt Conference and then to Conference USA.
Notable Alumni
The Hilltoppers have had thirty players drafted into the NFL in program history. Right now, six are currently active roster. However, it concurrence with the time that the dynasty is at, only two players are active in the NFL, Jack Doyle (Indianapolis Colts) and Bobby Rainey (Baltimore Ravens)
