Entering Week 13's contest at Qualcomm Stadium, the Tampa Buccaneers were undefeated on the road. The San Diego Chargers were winless at home. Despite some unexpected twists and the two teams combining for 67 total points on the day, neither streak came to an end.

Coming on the heels of a rough twelve weeks of football (plus a relocation announcement to boot), the first half of the game was an insulting disaster for the Chargers. The Buccaneers built a 27-0 halftime lead on the backs of an efficient offense, a blocked field goal return, and a pick six.

As the second half kicked off there were noticeable groups of empty seats in San Diego. The fans who remained, however, were treated to a display of offensive firepower and tenacity that they had been waiting to see all season.

After a 21 yard Branden Oliver touchdown run put the Chargers on the board in the 3rd quarter, the offense as a whole erupted in the 4th. Philip Rivers, who put up his best performance of the season, connected with Stevie Johnson for a touchdown a minute into the final quarter. After a failed two point conversion, a Josh Lambo field goal, and a 16 yard Doug Martin touchdown run, Tampa Bay led 37-16 with 5:20 left. That's when Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates stepped up, and showed exactly why they're such a legendary connection.

Gates, who finished the game with 139 yards receiving, broke two tackles and scampered 69 yards for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 37-23 with just over four minutes left. After San Diego's defense forced a quick three and out, Gates hauled in another Philip Rivers pass for a TD, this time on the first play of the drive. This put the score at 37-30.

In a scenario eerily reminiscent to last week in Houston, one final stop by San Diego's defense would give Philip Rivers and Co. a chance to tie the game. Like last week, the Chargers couldn't make that one final stop and Tampa Bay ran the clock out.

Despite the end result, San Diego's performance in the second half proved that this team's heart and willpower are still intact in spite of another down year. It also showed that the offensive firepower that's been absent for most of the season still exists. Now, the challenge is to unleash it for four whole quarters.

News: Injuries Necessitate Roster Shakeups

Last Sunday's Charger loss to Tampa Bay was also marred by injuries to two players: WR Travis Benjamin and LB Tyler Marcordes. Both will be out for the rest of the season and have been placed on IR, Benjamin with a dislocated elbow, Marcordes with a dislocated ankle. To fill their sports on the active roster, San Diego promoted WR Dezmin Lewis and LB Chris Landrum (11 TKL, 3 TFL, 2.5 Sacks in 2016 pre-season) from the practice squad. To fill their spots on the practice squad, the Chargers signed G Chase Farris and LS Joe Cardona from free agency. This marks the end to a rather disappointing inaugural season for Benjamin, who signed a 4 year, $18 million contract with San Diego in the off-season. Marred by three separate injuries, his first season as a Charger will end with 26 catches for 301 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. Marcordes' rookie campaign will end with 27 TKL, 5 TFL, and 0.5 sack.

2017 NFL Draft News: Pocic To Focus On Studies

According to a report from Fox Sports' Peter Schrager, LSU center Ethan Pocic "has decided to forego the remainder of his Senior season to focus on his sports administration degree". This move will, of course, prevent him from playing on the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on December 31st. Some scouts hope he still decides to enter the draft, but Schrager also reports that Pocic is already looking for ways to make use of his soon to be attained sports management degree. According to Schrager, Pocic has started making calls in hopes of landing a non-playing position somewhere in the NFL.

For the third week in a row, the Chargers followed their seemingly routine script: fall behind in the first half and mount a furious comeback effort in the second half.

On a clear December afternoon in Charlotte, the Chargers found themselves in a 27-0 hole late in the third quarter. Like clockwork, the offense seemed to finally find its rhythm at that point. Philip Rivers fired three touchdown passes in the game's final 16 minutes, bringing the deficit down to just six points with 2:36. Once again, the Chargers defense couldn't make the final stop, and Carolina drained the clock with ease.

One common press conference cliché is that "we need to learn how to finish". For the Chargers, they need to learn how to start. Their next test will be against the Oakland Raiders next Sunday.

Other notes from Bank of America Stadium:
  • TE Antonio Gates caught his 900th career pass.
  • CB Jason Verrett recorded his first interception of the season.
  • ILB Denzel Perryman left the game in the first quarter with an injury that appeared to be serious.
