Bears hang a 5-11 season during fire sale

The Chicago Bears 2016-17 season ended with a whimper on Sunday, falling to the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis to a 28-14 defeat that dropped them to 5-11 on the season. The Bears opened their season an incredibly surprising 4-1 before falling to just 1-10 in the final part of the season. A disappointing run for a team that has not been able to pull itself out of the NFC North cellar in several years. This move led the team early in the season to be sold, as Virginia McCaskey opted to reliniquish her shares of the team after being able to sell them for an amount that would more than pay for her heir's living expenses.

The new group, a Chicago based investment group headed by Tyler Kozlov, features minority members such as Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts among other Chicago area businessmen who joined into the fold to take over the ownership of the Chicago Bears. Kozlov addressed many fans concerns, "We will first look into rebuilding the crumbling infrastructure of historic Soldier Field before we even entertain the possibility of demolishing and rebuilding the stadium." Complaints have grown in recent years over conditions of the stadium stemming from the turf and including things such as the locker rooms and amenities.

On the field though, the team held a fire sale seemingly giving up on the season. The Bears shipped off jaded quarterback Jay Cutler, trading the veteran signal caller to the Kansas City Chiefs who hoped Cutler's gunslinging could put them over the edge and push them towards being super bowl contenders, sadly the move didn't work for them as the Chiefs stumbled to a 8-8 record and will miss the playoffs this season.

The Bears also parted ways with Alshon Jeffery, Jeffery had failed a PED test and missed some games, but was still a raw talent but stated he wasn't committed to the Bears. Not wanting to franchise tender their wide receiver a second year, the Bears decided instead to view ahead and trade him away, stealing away the Jacksonville Jaguars top draft pick, the move could prove to be huge for the Jaguars, as they shot up to an 11-5 record on the season and are a key contender in the AFC.

Re: Monsters of the Midway - Chicago Bears (M17)

From the streets to the Super Bowl trophy

The Seattle Seahawks did the unthinkable. Losing Russell Wilson to a season ending collarbone injury, Seattle's season as far as pundits were concerned was over, especially as they limped into the playoffs after losing back to back weeks against sub .500 teams. This all with a quarterback under the helm that wasn't even slated to play this season.

Johnny Manziel.

Yes.. that Johnny Manziel.

Manziel was signed by the Seahawks after signing several contractual agreements focused upon his habitual alcoholism and party lifestyle. Managing to avoid the headlines, at least in a negative way for off the field conduct, his signing paved the way for another Seattle Seahawks world championship.

Manziel found himself starting for the Seattle Seahawks as they primed themselves for a playoff run, despite going 1-3 as a starter for Seattle, the Seahawks invested themselves in him moving through the playoffs, feeling Trevone Boykin was still a little too far out to be reliable in the playoffs, not that Manziel has ever been the image of reliability, but going into the playoffs thrusting another new quarterback in could really melt continuity, and for whatever strings Pete Carroll pulled, he added a second championship to his resume.

"We took a lot of flak from around the league, media and other executives shaking their heads at us for giving him another shot. He took his workload seriously and we put a lot of pressure on him to ensure every possible facet of his contractual obligations were being met. It seems to have worked out pretty well for everyone.." spoke Pete Carroll in the post game conference, a smile seemingly incapable of leaving his face.

In a battle of a shocking matchup from both ends, the San Diego Chargers emerged from the AFC after beating the Oakland Raiders for the AFC Championship. The Chargers led by Phillip Rivers piled up almost double the Seahawks yardage, but the difference came on turnovers. The Chargers had two, while the Seahawks had none, and fourteen points off turnovers in the second quarter was the difference in a 17-14 game.

That despite it all, despite not starting the 2016 season the roster, Johnny Manziel was the one hoisting MVP honors when the game came to an end is nothing short of incredible, a legacy that could very likely define his career. Manziel is a free agent after this season and the Seahawks may resign him to back up Russell Wilson, but it's unlikely Manziel will want to remain a free agent, and suddenly the man that no one wanted, has become the face of a free agency class, a face of a franchise, and a super bowl champion.

Christian Jones headlines Bears departing free agents

Despite offering contracts to players such as Christian Jones and Marquess Wilson, the Bears struggled to bring back much of anyone, in fact they will lose almost a third of their roster. With 19 expiring contracts, the Bears allowed 16 to walk, or at least were unable to reel them in. The Bears decided to also part ways with Connor Barth, the replacement for franchise stalwart kicker, Robbie Gould. The Bears didn't lose any major starters from the past season, but their depth is in shambles and the team will need to utilize the draft and free agency to refill their ranks.

Re: Monsters of the Midway - Chicago Bears (M17)

Myles Garrett goes number one to Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Colts led off the 2017 NFL Draft by selecting Myles Garrett out of Texas A&M. Garrett was highly heralded and it's hardly a shock to see him be the first play selected coming out of college. Garrett is the most NFL ready prospect and boasts a unique balance of speed and strength to get to the quarterback, the Colts biggest issue remain to be on defense, and the Colts improve themselves heavily with this one. He should be a leader for this defense, and could be as big of a presence as Dwight Freeney once was for the Indianapolis Colts.

Pick 2

Arizona Cardinals selected Mitch Trubisky from the University of North Carolina

Mitch Trubisky came in with minimal NFL hype, but as the season progressed, his stock soared culminating in a top five draft grade that saw the quarterback whom only notched about a dozen collegiate starts be taken with the second overall pick of the draft. Trubisky fits the Carson Palmer role that the Cardinals previously had with Palmer. Trubisky is a very NFL ready quarterback with many experts placing him neck and neck with DeShaun Watson as the top quarterback prospect. It simply came down to system and Bruce Arians felt Trubisky fit the Cardinals better and after a 4 win season, getting their man under center is big. Especially with Larry Fitzgerald in the twilight of his career.

Pick 3

The Denver Broncos select Cam Robinson (T) of Alabama with the third pick

The Denver Broncos couldn't put together a proper win streak, especially after trade negotiations to bring Jay Cutler back to Denver failed and they weren't able to get a quarterback with NFL experience under center. Robinson gives the Broncos a good blindside protector with high upside as a top tackle. Robinson holds up the blindside better than anyone in the draft and while there is better quarterback prospects available to plug and play in the draft, the team undoubtedly wants to see what they have with Paxton Lynch before moving on just a year into the experiment. The Broncos defense is strong and this move gives the offense a good opportunity to catch up.

Pick 4

The San Francisco 49ers selected Tim Williams of Alabama with the fourth pick of the 2017 draft

The 49ers have holes all over the place and after several holes left by early retirements, Tim Williams give them an impact starter on the defense. Williams will give a versatile, high octane defender that can get north and south quickly but has good lateral speed to fill holes as they open. Will Williams fix everything on the defensive end? No, but he will provide a much needed boost on the 49ers defensive front.

Pick 5

The Chicago Bears select quarterback Deshaun Watson of Clemson University with the fifth pick of the 2017 draft
The Bears fully move on from the Jay Cutler era, after a decent but unspectacular showing from Matt Barkley last year for the Chicago Bears, the team opted to finally draft their replacement, and while rumors early were the Bears considered moving up to try and land their guy, they felt high enough about Mitch Trubisky and Deshaun Watson that they were willing to hope the 49ers who retained Kapernick would pass on a quarterback, allowing the Bears to keep their three first round selections and get an excellent dual threat quarterback that has a high amount of potential.

Re: Monsters of the Midway - Chicago Bears (M17)

Round 1 - Pick 5
Quarterback DeShaun Watson - Clemson Tigers
College Stats: 755-1115 (67.7%) 9489 PaYds 86 TD 30 INT
398 Carries - 1829 RuYds 4.6 YPC 23 TD

DeShaun Watson was expected to go early in this year's draft thanks to a somewhat light upper tier that saw many teams bullish on other quarterbacks Brad Kaaya and DeShone Kizer, although Mitch Trubisky's surprising announcement to go pro did hurt his stock somewhat, Watson has had an excellent college career, making the national championship game in his sophomore campaign, while leading the Tigers to the playoffs for a second consecutive year in his junior year before making the decision to go pro. Early concerns about maturity rang out when Watson stated discomfort with media attention, but he settled into his position and finished the season strong, in the race for the heisman. Although he wasn't able to claim a heisman trophy, it's hard to fault this dual threat quarterback. He has franchise QB in his DNA, and it's just up to the Bears to develop Watson.

Round 1 - Pick 13
Cornerback Teez Tabor - Florida Gators
College Stats: 103 Tackles - 11 For Loss - 4 Sacks - 8 INT - 1 FF 3 FR - 3 Defensive touchdowns
All-SEC defensive back Jalen "Teez" Tabor lands in Chicago as they hope to pair Kyle Fuller with another young talent. Tabor has all of the potential in the world and is an opportunistic defensive back. He will likely play a lot of nickle in the early going as he adjusts to the NFL game, but expect to see him fairly regularly on Sundays early on. Especially if he shines. Only major issue is height, at just six feet tall, taller wide receivers will have a natural advantage, though his excellent vertical does seek to mitigate that.

Round 1 - Pick 24
Guard Zach Banner - USC Trojans
The Bears ticked off three major needs with their haul from their Jay Cutler and Alshon Jeffery trades. Banner provides an absolute monster of a pass rusher. Banner's technique is raw, but his strength is virtually unmatched. He may be able to develop into a tackle down the road, but playing a driving guard that can push the pile is what he offers in the early going. An excellent run blocker with question marks when it comes to pass blocking, concerns about his ability with the later hurt his draft stock despite a strong campaign.

Round 2 - Pick 5
Wide Receiver Corey Davis - Western Michigan Broncos
College Stats: 325 Rec 5205 ReYds 51 TD
2 Years in a row the Bears tap into Western Michgan's receiving corps. Though Corey Davis comes in much more heralded than Daniel Braverman had. Davis was an absolute force all four years at Western Michigan, in fact the wide receiver didn't go under 1400 yards after his freshman year and had double digit touchdowns in all years except for his first. Davis gives the Bears a possession target that can potentially be a red zone threat. Sure hands and precise route running are the big claims to fame for Davis who slots in around a slot receiver this early in the career though he projects to be a second receiver or a stretch top wide out. Davis was a big part of the Broncos undefeated campaign in his senior year.

Round 3 - Pick 5
Defensive Tackle Eddie Vanderdoes - UCLA Bruins
College Stats: 122 Tackles 13.5 For Loss 4 Sacks 2 FF 2 FR
Eddie Vanderdoes had high expectations going into his final year after injury ended his 2015 season short. Injury concerns and just one sack in his final campaign hurt his draft stick, though Vanderdoes still decided to declare. Vanderdoes won't be expected to be much more than depth this early in his career and with the Bears utilizing a 3-4 don't expect to see much of him early outside of the preseason. This is a big potential pick and while many tabbed Vanderdoes to go in the mid second round, he lasted until the early third where the Bears snatched him up.

Round 4 - Pick 5
Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie - Colorado Buffalo
College Stats: 261 Tackles - 25 For Loss 9 Sacks - 3 INT - 6 FF - 3 FR
Awuzie played all four years at Colorado and proved himself to be an excellent tackler and edge rusher from the defensive back slot. The Buffaloes soared in his senior season despite his numbers dipping somewhat from last year to this season. Awuzie is somewhat raw when it comes to defending plays but he was one of the better tacklers and showed excellent instincts in taking proper angles to the ball. Don't be surprised to see him get some early playing time.

Round 5 - Pick 5
Tackle Jonah Pirsig - Minnesota Gophers
Pirsig provides another body to the offensive line group which was hit fairly hard by free agency. Expect him to only be a relief tackle at this point in his career. He does have upside but it would be a shock to see him start at tackle this season unless injury forces him in.

Round 5 - Pick 13
Wide Receiver Dede Westbrook - Oklahoma Sooners
College Stats: 120 Rec 2208 ReYds 20 TD
Westbrook was a two year starter at Oklahoma though he truly caught fire in his senior year where he was a Heisman finalist. There are some concerns, he left his final regular season game with a concussion, his size is average and at times his route running can be sloppy. Though his athleticism is electrifying. This is a potential pick and at the fifth round it's hard to fault the Bears for taking him here. He can step in and be your primary kick returner while he works on his wide receiver abilities.

Re: Monsters of the Midway - Chicago Bears (M17)

Chicago Bears Free Agent acquisitions
By Position

QB - Christian Ponder
2016 Stats: 19-28 187 PaYds 1 TD
Ponder is a depth acquisition that gives the Bears two veteran options underneath DeShaun Watson. Ponder isn't any sort of a threat to take the starting position unless Watson really struggles early. Ponder returns to the NFC North after starting his career in Minnesota.

FB - Roosevelt Nix
2016 Stats: 17 Car - 26 Yards 1.6 YPC
8 Rec - 69 Yards - 1 TD
Nix provides a fullback that can pull in a pass out of the backfield or be an adequate lead blocker to push through a hole. The Bears don't always utilize a power run scheme but he will come in use for bigger sets.

WR - Kendall Wright
2016 Stats: 61 Rec 694 ReYds 3 TD
Wright had a fairly pedestrian season in a contract year and saw his team not exercise their contract option upon him. Wright will be one of the top wide receivers for the Bears whom dipped into free agency to replenish a fairly weak receiving unit in wake of the Alshon Jeffery trade.

Robert Woods
2016 Stats: 66 Rec 751 ReYds 3 TD
Woods joins the Bears after having a career year. The Trojan product opted to test out free agency with the free agency class being as weak as it was, it allowed for him to take full advantage and the Bears get a solid young receiver out of it. The Bears hope he can get more touchdown production but he provides DeShaun Watson another target.

Tackle- Andrew Whitworth
The Veteran tackle was considered one of the best players in this free agency class. A high value, short contract gave the Bears a force at their left tackle position. The Bears made several moves with drafting a rookie quarterback in mind. Surrounding him with wide receivers and ensuring the trenches would be as favorable as possible.

Guard - Greg Van Roten
Van Roten is a utility lineman that will be used for spot relief duty. Signed to a team friendly contract, Van Roten likely won't see the field very much, he sits behind Josh Sitton on the depth chart.

Defensive End - Karl Klug
2016 Stats - 1 Tackle 1 Sack
Klug was limited in action during the 2016 season but figures to be a bigger part of this Bears defensive unit. Klug is an early leader for the starting right end position. Klug had 7 sacks his rookie year but has regressed since, the Bears hope to tape into his glimpses of excellence in this acquisition.

Linebacker - James Laurinaitis
2016 Stats - 2 Tackles
Laurinaitis had his worst statistical season by far last season which was his first year not hitting the century mark in tackles and unsurprisingly it was the final year before his contract wouldn't be extended. Laurinaitis has shown talent as a servicable linebacker and the Bears simply signed him for depth purposes, can't go wrong with him as your third or fourth linebacker.

Kicker - Graham Gano
2016 Stats - 17-22 FG 77% 57 LNG 33-35 XP (2 BLK)
Two years and two kickers, after the departure of Robbie Gould, the Bears opted to not offer Connor Barth an extension after a poor 2016 campaign and instead opted for Gano who is coming off his worst season in five years. Though he hit the seocnd longest kick of his career, and the longest since 2011 when he knocked through a 59 yard field goal, the Bears hope his boot stays strong and his misses shrink.
