Arthur Dorsey hauls in his 2nd quarter touchdown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia Mountaineers defeated Pennsylvania A&T (Penn A&T) 48-14 in the first ever game for the Fightin' Dutchmen.

After the visitors drove down the field on their first drive to put up a touchdown, WVU coach Dana Holgorsen had enough and stepped on the gas, while never letting go.

Sophomore Tyler Ruberio led his Dutchmen down the field in nine plays, highlighted by a 41-yard pass from Ruberio to Spencer Gaston before Ruberio capped it off on an option keeper from four yards away.

From there, WVU scored 24 unanswered.

Penn A&T did not let it get too far away before the break when Ruberio found Arthur Dorsey (above) from 13 yards out to make it 24-14 into the locker room. The visitors would not find pay-dirt again.

The Fightin' Dutchmen got some help defensively from Delmar Ayres who stepped in front of an "out" route in the first quarter. Lamont Singletary also intercepted a pass to start the third quarter but on the ensuing drive Ruberio tossed an interception that was returned 96 yards for a tocuhdown to put the game out of reach at 31-14.

Re: Pennsylvania A&T (NCAA 14 Teambuilder Dynasty)

Here at The Daily Dutchman (A Penn A&T institutional publication), we have dedicated a weekly section for our athletic programs to get highlighted.

Coaches Corner:
Here, Penn A&T Head Football Coach Tim Keyser will do a quick (honest) breakdown of last week's performance followed by a rundown of their upcoming opponent.

Tim Keyser:

[On last week's game] Honestly, when we scored first, I was beyond ecstatic. Tyler Ruberio is more of a playmaker than we expected coming into the fall. Him throwing to Arthur Dorsey could really put us in a position to win a game or two this year. But when we scored on that first drive, I knew we were in trouble. Coach Holgorsen is one of the strongest minds in college football and I knew he wasn't happy with his defense. That showed. With that being said, we were thrilled they were willing to be our program's first opponent. We called them within weeks of my hiring and our AD told me I was insane. Bill Stewart was the coach then and he probably knew it would be an easy win for him but I'm almost positive Coach Holgorsen hated having to matchup with us because who wants to be the school to play a new program but I think we surprised him a little. Surprised me too.

[On Rutgers] I'm from New Brunswick, New Jersey. I could see Rutgers Stadium out of my bedroom window when I was little. I scheduled this game back when I was hired as well because I had known coach Schiano for some time now and I'll be honest I was a little selfish and wanted to play a game close to my roots. Me and coach Schiano played against each other in the NJ state playoffs back in high school and he was more than willing to play us when we called. Well, the big boys called him off so now Coach Flood is stuck with playing us. Their pro style offense is going to be a major change of pace from what Dana threw at us (literally) last week. Practice has been interesting this week. The guys are excited coming off their first game, despite the big loss. We'll have to worry about their QB Nova making plays with his feet but their defense could give us fits. Their front seven is as strong as a team we will play all year with a core of youth and experience. They lost 41-14 last week to a really, really good Fresno State team. Those 14 points scored were on interception's returned for six. We are going to have to play mistake free football this week.

Re: Pennsylvania A&T (NCAA 14 Teambuilder Dynasty)

Huggins' career-day leaves Penn A&T behind

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers defeated Pennsylvania A&T 48-13 on Saturday in the Scarlet Knight's home opener.

Rutgers running back Savon Huggins ran for a school record 290 yards on 25 carries while finding the end zone four times in the blowout.

After the host defense forced a punt to start the game, Huggins took five carries for 60 yards after finishing from five yards out in their opening drive to kick off the scoring. He went on to score two more times in the first half and once more in the third quarter before having to leave the game with a strained back. The potential National Player of the Week is being considered day-to-day.

The visitors had a quick answer after Rutgers' first score when Tyler Ruberio found Arthur Dorsey over the top for a 63-yard touchdown pass, their second in as many weeks. Dorsey finished just two yards shy of the century mark on four receptions.

Penn A&T could simply not break through the Scarlet Knight offensive line to get through to Huggins.

The Fightin Dutchmen defense, despite getting torn up on the ground, made some nice plays. In the third quarter, Thad Spears stepped in front of a Gary Nova pass for his first interception of the year. Ruberio proceeded to hand the ball right back with a pick on the first play of the ensuing drive. Defensive End Haywood Birch disrupted the back field on a second and goal line play when he sacked Nova at the one before a tackle for loss by John Delassantos forced the hosts to kick a field goal to end the third quarter.

Penn A&T got two field goals out of Hugo Daubert in the fourth, 24 and 36 yards, respectively.

The Fightin Dutchmen get a week off from game action before they host Marshall for their home opener at Steve Van Buren Field in week four.

Tim Keyser:
[On last week's game] I don't have much to say for you guys after last week. Not to take anything away from such a masterful performance but Savon Huggins was not even one of our players to key in on for the defense. Low and behold, the kid gashes us for a school record 290 yards and four tuddies.

Our offense did not have much to offer other than what we already knew; Arthur Dorsey is going to be good. Our defense has some guys who can make plays, but they have next to no consistency. Until we can find that group of guys that can put together one or two stops in a row and give our offense a chance because we all know it needs a few to get going.

Rutgers destroyed us. No other way of saying it. Luckily we have a "bye" this week and can hopefully work on some things and make some progress in practice. It will be good to see how the team reacts.

Pennsylvania A&T is idle this week. We will hear more from Coach Keyser next week when the Fightin Dutchmen take on Marshall in their first home game.
